When I first watched this anime when I was 12 I hated mikaru because I saw her simply as the girl who stole kaito away from luchia but now that I’m older(18) I understand that she was just so lonely and kaito was the first person to be her friend and give her happiness. Of course she’d want to be by his side no matter what even if it meant taking him away from luchia. So now I don’t blame her or hate her anymore, I sadly can relate to her. She just wants someone to be by her and love her, just like everyone does.

Mikaru seems to represent the human princess from the original version of the Little Mermaid. But in this case, she is the one who gets a sad ending. Mikaru is lonely and sad and Kaito brought joy into her life. But even when Lucia and the others tried to be her friend, she turned them away and rejected them. She actually glares at Lucia when Lucia tries to help her one time. She destroys half the things in her room when Kaito refuses to be her boyfriend and leaves for good, causing her to attempt suicide to try and get him back. People hate her because of her actions at this point. She goes from being a sympathetic girl to an obsessive stalker almost.

Another thing I want to complain about, is that many seem to think that Lucia would have done the same if she was in Mikaru's place. That is DEAD wrong. Even if the circumstances would be the same, the personalities are way too different. Lucia wouldn't have clinged to Kaito like Mikaru did. She is way too kind of a person to do that. Knowing her, she would probably rather stay away from Kaito as much as possible, because she doesn't want to see him with Mikaru and get hurt. Also, Lucia is strong. She would bear the sadness, live with it, and eventually overcome it.

Yuizaki Hiyono Mikeru (mikaru) is the crazy one not Luchia. In one of the episode in the second season she pretended to suddenly have some cough attack. When Kaito took her home and when they were in the house near the front door. She slammed him into a wall holding his waist and telling him not to leave her. He told her to let him go but she wouldn’t and grabbed onto him more possessively. Kaito tried to get her off of her but she wouldn’t budge until her big brother who came in to see the commotion. He had to pry her off of Kaito and hold onto her wrists to let Kaito leave.

I really sympathise a lot with Mikaru. She's been lonely in her life because of her sickness that she can't help and which reluctantly lives an isolated life. Unlike Luchia, she doesn't have best friends like Hanon and Rina, except a caring brother (but he's too busy to cure her loneliness). I don't see why many people hate her.. Kaito was somebody she finally found as a companion, and what's wrong with clinging to that person helplessly after infinite lonely days? Imagine a life on a deserted island, of course you'd be super happy when you at last found a companion/ special someone, and that person will become your only hope, which is the case for Mikaru. Yeah you say she's wrong for stealing Kaito from Luchia, but look, she has no clue at all right from the start that the amnesia Kaito has a lover already; and finally when she knows, she has already fallen deeply for her only hope. It sounds so wrong for Luchia, but Mikaru is in a state as desperate as her too, or even much more than her with a lonely background. I think Mikaru has done nothing wrong, she's as innocent as Luchia, but I feel more pity for her.

Well Mikaru also has memories shared with Kaito, like the first time she met him, and also with the amnesia Kaito at her home or at school (Kaito at that time forgot completely about Luchia, and he mistook his feelings for Mikaru as love before his memory came back later...) But anyway for Mikaru it's still her first love, and her first social interaction after a so long lonely life. So her stealing away of Kaito was on an innocent and bad-timing basis, not intentionally.

I feel sorry for her but Mikaru had jealousy when it came to Luchia and wanted Kaito to stay away from Luchia. When Kaito lost his memory Mikaru did in fact fall for Kaito over the days she spent with him. Although when she found out that Kaito has some relationship with Luchia she started to try many things to get her away from him. She became more obsessed with Kaito. Once Mikaru did in fact pretended to have a cough attack to get Kaito away from Luchia and to get Kaito’s full attention. This was when Kaito started to fall in love with Luchia once again with small amounts of memory of them. Also Mikaru is part of the main villain of Mikeru who attacked Kaito one day surfing in another place. Mikeru who was in fact Mikaru tried to get information of the mermaid princesses from Kaito. Kaito had to seal his own memories for the safety for Luchia and the others.

I think one major reason Mikaru gets so much hate is because of her selfish behavior. We can all sympathize with the fact that she was always ill and lonely, but that doesn't excuse her actions. She didn't truly love Kaito, she only thought she did. And worse, she thought Kaito loved her, that he belonged with her and only her. She hated seeing any of the other students, not just Lucia, get near him. She didn't love him, she objectified him and tried to keep him to herself. Her loneliness had nothing to do with it. It was selfish desires.

Yeah it's understandable the way she is but it doesn't help she has such a selfish personality. It's like kids. Mikaru needed someone, very badly. She was very lonely and she never really knew about "happiness". Kaito gave her the very few moments of happiness she got in her life. She was, for once, feeling normal. Sure Luchia saw him before, but Luchia...her life was somewhat perfect. And no, it's not Mikaru who stole Kaito to Luchia, it's Kaito who switched at first, Mikaru didn't knew about Luchia. Technically, it's Luchia who stole him to Mikaru. And by the way...the way he left Mikaru, in my opinion, was a lot more horrible than the way he left Luchia before. Well, personally, to see the one I love, the one who took me out of my loneliness and my only hope go away slowly. And by the way, seeing that person fall in love with an another one in front of me. It's not Luchia who stole Kaito from Mikaru. And besides, she doesn't own Kaito to begin with. Kaito lost his memory. That's why he forgot Luchia. And he did that for Luchia's sake. He does not want to put the 7 mermaid princesses in danger that's why he chose to erase all of his memory about the mermaid's for their sake.
