Before I bought anything for this hobby, I went to the pool a number of times with regular fins I had. I honed my technique by treating them as a monofin. After finding joy doing that, I knew I had to get a monofin and tail skin. It was a good way for me to ensure I could both go mermaiding safely and would really find it worthwhile--before I had to invest any money. Thank you for the great video!

to be honest I'm not sure they're the same thing, as for mermaiding is an underwater sport swim safety is super important and the other two you can do on dry land... I was in a group chat and there were people into mermaiding for the costuming and aesthetic purposes who didn't know how to dolphin kick and yet were attempting to mermaid in the water with no caution. Mermaid monofins are banned at a lot of pools because ignorant people ignore the swim safety aspects and it kinda gives up all a bad name

I am glad that she mentioned this cause fursuiting and mermaiding has many things in common and at times I do wonder why they keep themselves apart other than the obvious things like mermaiding being in water and fursuiting not. Do we know if those two fields ever crosses path at major cons? J.

@@JohanMsWorld I'm a selkie, which kinda walks the threshold of mermaids and furries. I'm still both tailless and suit-less, but I do have a few mersonas and fursonas, and I am trying to bring more awareness between both communities. I recently introduced a few other seal and selkie furries to the mermaid community, and it's done a lot of good for them so far.

Faith, you were actually the reason I started down the mermaid rabbit hole! (I was the one who had just bought their first tail in the chat on the Little Mermaid-inspired tails stream. Update on that: it's great! I started slow with my partner on lookout duty in the pool at my apartment, and since then was confident enough to spend almost an entire day in the water at a spring. Thanks for being such a wonderful, safety-minded intro into the world of mermaiding!)

The fact you mentioned you're 25 is so comforting - I'm 25 and just getting into mermaiding! Just ordered my first (simpler, cheaper) tail and not gonna lie, was a little nervous about it the age range. "You're too old to be playing mermaid dress up!"

I love swimming with my Mono fin but mermaid tails in mono fins are banned at my public pool, and all the public pools around us so I only get to do it around once or twice a year

Don't forget that making your own spandex tail is also more cost efficient. Fabric is cheap and you can have many styles without spending a lot of money on pre made tails. And it is more unique, as you're the only one that has a tail in that print! Self made tail is also good for when you're still deciding if you want to plunge into mermaiding but without the cost of spending on an expensive tail.

Recommending a fabric tail is such an ingenious idea lol I'm usually the type to be like "WOW that hobby is so AH-MAZING, I want to look and feel as authentic as possible! and then I go out buy something expensive and get frustrated bc Duh I don't even know how to properly swim in one yet smh lol. It makes so much sense I'm surprised I didn't even think of it I definitely want to purchase one this Summer. People are so random, why do you want to continue something you enjoyed as a child? idk why do you like to paint your nails, or collect weapons? lol bc we like too.

Safety cant be pressed enough here - Specially not with all the interest the new movie will spark over this summer. There is a lot of wrong (read unsafe) ways of doing mermaiding and even more so when its involves those with less swim experiences. That is part of why I hepisite to try mermaiding and I had some great swim experience in my youth so I can imagine how it must be for those who arent as experienced with water as I was then. I point this out cause there are many videos out there showing how mermaiding should not be done (again due to safety) and some of those still make my back hair raise. But if done right by those that understands the risks and challenges involved in swiming with monofins its a great and fun hobby that many can do - I am not trying to downtalk it here, just point towards safety. Okay, first of all, about what you said about those scrutinizing mermaiding, fully agree with you that it is unwarranted. As far as I have seen, you gals are doing a great job of keeping things safe, and the few outliers out there you quickly call out. No argument there. My disagreement is that it has something to do with the practitioners being majority women. It happens to us guys too. I practiced historical fencing for years (almost all guys), and we had safety gear, rules, self-control, and curriculum. However, we were constantly moving from place to place because people didn't want us to practice. In RC flying (another male-dominated sport), the FAA is constantly breathing down our backs for things that have not even happened. I have to register my model planes, and drones, with the FAA nowadays. I think the reason it seems others are trying to crush our hobbies is that if they aren't into the hobby, they don't care about it and it only takes one little nudge (one bad thought or idea, or false conception) to make them be against it. One thing that might help is to start

I've seen from a couple of mermen on FB is that they feel as though if they'd be seen as more suspicion to indulge in such a hobby--to do untoward things with children. Unfortunately, this seems to also plague a subset of male cosplayers that want to volunteer in their community as well. It sucks, no matter what way I slice it. 😔

@@Dinker27 Sorry that I took a while to answer. Forgot about it. On what was cut off on my first comment, truth be told, I am not sure what it was I was going to say. Funny, isn't that? As for getting into mermaiding as a guy, the first step (assuming you are a competent swimmer. If not that is the first step) would be to practice monofin swimming without a tail. This will at least give you a lot of the experience you will get with tail swimming. You will swim the same way in just a monofin that you will in a tail and is very fun. Also, you will not be getting as many odd looks from those around you. Monofin swimming is not seen as girly (just different), so most just see it as something they don't see everyday. It will also get you used to the awkwardness that will come from tail swimming. If/when you put on a tail, you will get looks (that is inevitable). The good news is, for the most part, the looks aren't going to hurt you.

Yeah, you'll be just fine. I was in the same boat with the butterfly/competative swim and rings. super easy to pick up, especially if you get a beginner tail like finfun. You won't have a problem, especially if you use fins regularly

Just sharing my experience out here: I've been using fin fun tails since I was 9 (am somewhat of a good swimmer), I totally envy that y'all in America can mermaid in public or even private pools cause. I'm from HK and mermaiding isn't very heard of here. I realized now that I'm older it's seen as kind of "inappropriate" for non-kids to be using a mermaid tail in the pool. Last month I went to a club pool (paid an entrance fee) with my mermaid tail and the lifeguard called me out because apparently "swim gear or flippers are not allowed", even if there's nobody else in the pool but me because the residents would see me, supposedly. I bought a limited edition lotus moon tail recently and it's REALLY amazing, I could only wear it when I'm on vacation at a hotel pool or something, which seems like a big waste. But I hope mermaiding can become more known here in HK, as much as cosplaying.

I certainly hope that mermaiding will become more accepted over there! To be honest you are the first mermaid I have heard of from HK. Honestly what really helped me get mermaiding to become more accepted in my area was to network with aquatic professionals by becoming a lifeguard myself.
