Hi Merphy, big fan from a long way back. Seeing you become such a big part of the OP community has been great. You should pressure/invite Tim to read One Piece, he had a great video on writing Insular civilizations that I feel Oda nails on every point, so maybe it'd also be great to hear Tim's perspective and take on this.

Fun fact, in Ireland the term Bender is slang for homosexual. So imagine a late 2000s young adult movie crowd in the cinema busting a gut laughing when Katara's grandmother basically talks about the time they found out she was gay in your Nickelodeon family feature film. Best part was my brother and I forgot about that aspect and just embraced the silliness of the naming while watching that god awful movie.

One thing I love about Suki is from the very first episode she is in when Sokka apologizes for treating her like a girl and not a warrior and she states that she is a warrior and that she is a girl too. So many people feel that to be a strong woman you have to be the tough, hardened almost butch character that is shown in media but avatar did it well showing that women can be warriors while still being women and not just women acting like a typical man being the showing of them being warriors. Suki, Azula, Ty Lee, Mai, Toph, and Katara are great examples. Toph showed it in ba sing se where she is a tough as nails girl who kicks butt, but sometimes its fine to feel pretty. It doesn't take away from who you are. Asami's character kind of added onto that as well in the Korra series.

I actually enjoy them equally for different reasons. When I rewatched both series I found Korra to be refreshingly original, and filled with alot of character development, and believe that the villains in the show are superior to fire lord. My Problem with fiction to reality Shows is that the writers (not the original ones) tend to rewrite the story instead of translating from book or paper to screen. It destroyed game if thrones, the Witcher and oh so many other projects, just because some idiot thought: "I bet I can make this 100x better than the guy/gal/whatever that wrote this thing, which got 100 million fans."

sadly the director of the blue people avatar had the right to the name avatar in 1996 i believe and when they tried to make the series they were told they needed to add something after to make it not a copyright problem. now the fact that the blue people avatar is dealing with elements now is kinda odd to me and idk how long that was part of the concept or if the guy took it from the kids show. in the end tho avatar the last airbender is better in so many ways. and the blue people avatar is just alien pocahontas with cool effects

Something about a live action adaptation of a cartoon is trying to capitalize on niche fanbase to create something that cannot live up to the original by sheer basis of the medium. People, who are full of life and have one, can not be as animated as a cartoon because a cartoon is the person in your head who entertains the absurd. When you put the absurd in a real setting without addressing the obvious subversion of the setting makes it a different story using the original blocks of the story to make a new story, that ultimately stands in the shadow of the original. Harry potter showed me that the book can be infinitely better because of imagination, Lord of the Rings showed me reading can be boring, but you can still enjoy something without consuming the original media, but Peter Jackson, while making the cash grab, was in a passion project, so it was good. The Hobbit was ok, but with Dragonball evolution and M Night airbender made me feel like any live representation of a cartoon is going to lose the charm of the cartoon and what made me love it in the first place. The more you see, the less you have to imagine. Like imagine every exchange between Luffy and Kaido or Luffy and Doflamingo. The manga, at least the way I read it makes these things feel like snapshots in a fight moving so fast I can't see it. The same way with Goku vs Frieza. But then a production with a schedule gets involved and animation and animators and outsourcing and corporate nonsense that I'm not going to pretend to understand the nuance, but you can always see decisions that are made in service of the story and decisions made in service of production and profit, which without, the story doesn't get heard, so it is very rarely absent. Then you add on top of that the restrain of reality, physics, paid crews and so on, it just can't be what the original was. Which is why I think live action one piece will eventually flop. There are too many moving pieces to the point that by the time they even get to the Grand line, a completely different story is likely to happen. Korra had great direction and storyboarding and horrible execution. Every villain is infinitely better than all of the protagonists in being a believable person in that world who would do the things they do. You can tell when someone in the production said, ya but what if we did this? The villains in Korra are expertly set up, but by nature of the protagonist being an idiot, and half of the plot being an idiot plot that can only exist by someone being an idiot, thus making the villain look even dumber by being foiled by an idiot. And not the good kind of idiot like Luffy who is to free to care about thoughts or having them, but an idiot who believes in the propaganda she was raised in and we as the audience know where she needs to grow and where she falls short and are ultimately just waiting for her to get there. Writing a dynamic character isn't always about make the character less than whole in some way to then make them whole. People don't work like that. When people grow, small aspects of them change. Luffy is written to be a flat character, but he isn't, he just is consistent and true to himself. The same with Goku, but in a different way, the calls to adventure are drastically different, but a call to adventure all the same. With aang's character, being somewhat inspired by a shonen protagonist has this call to adventure innate within, but it's ultimately a story about fate and responsibility, and each character, villain, hero, or side character, reinforces this theme. What is the theme of Korra? I really want to know because it feels like it doesn't have one. The villains feel like the good guys and I just want them to win and korra and the rest to lose because the only moral ground she has to stand on is deus ex because im the avatar boom. I don't like it. It feels like its trying to be Dragonball Z, but not from the story aspect, but from the insane power creep that it created in long stories of progressively villains as a means to raise the stakes. I don't know why everyone feels the need to have RPG progression in a story. The reason Goku worked in the first place is that he was based on the Monkey king, and as the world becomes a world and not a gag, having the Most Immortal of all Immortals, the spirit of fire itself, the Monkey King, as a main character has no tension. In the original Journey to the west, Monkey isn't the main character. He is support. Mostly the get out of jail when Monkey feels like it card. The tension is Suenzhang being a monk who doesn't kill people being a buddhist, and Monkey being a monkey, just kills the people he doesn't like. So we have a reason for him to grow, not in the power sense, or in a way that affects the power dynamics, but in a way that is tied to his fate and his growth, and ultimately, your (the reader's) growth. Goku not having spiritually conflicting things already puts him at Monkey's end game at the start, so where do you go from there? Thus is born the dragonball scaling problem, which I think works well until Frieza (Which i apposite that the story should have ended there, and it was planned to, but also planned to end in like 6 other places so i digress). Korra's growth, at least from my perspective, is that even though you think you can do something and you were destined to do so, sometimes you fall short and still need help. And what even is the end? Korrasami? I'm all for relationships and openness and all that, but it had little to no set up, and sets up Korra, Asami, and Mako as complete tools who have no emotional maturity or sense. Even less so than Aang who was comically awkward on those topics. Which is why it feels like there is no payoff. They didn't earn that relationship, the creator just wanted to see some pretty girls kiss, and do they even do it i can't remember the ending. Kulvira got beat somehow or something and then nothing. Granted it was a dying show on a mostly unknown platform, and Zaheer the best written character in the whole show. I probably have more to say, but this is way too long. Thank you for your time.

Fun fact that is surely somewhere else in the comments, James Cameron did not sue ATLA, for one they werent the first to use it, but Cameron was working on Avatar as far back as the 90's with the name as well, but wasn't in pre-production until after ATLA started. All that being said, Cameron's attempts to copywright "Avatar" did effect the Legend of Korra, as it was originally going to be Titled, Avatar: The Legend of Korra. NBD In my opinion.

An Azula redemption just doesn’t make sense. Even if her personality was heavily influenced by her evil father she was a very awful and evil child, who took pleasure in watching people suffer and be miserable. And her mom was a part of her life during that age. No amount of love and affection that her mom could pour into her can child an evil child. She didn’t have empathy and children without empathy are psychopaths who require insane amount of therapy in childhood to help. She is an irredeemable character and she should stay that way. Sometimes it’s ok for a character to be evil and bad and irredeemable.

What I really liked about Korra was how she was the opposite to Aang she was down to fight no problem fixing her problems with her fists gets mopped by Kuvira after barely getting the poison out of her system

@@durrangodsgrief6503ax, you’d think she’d be an overwhelming force (season 2 onward she has access to 4 elements and the literal *Avatar State)* that the villains circumvent and outsmart to show how her brazen and violent nature is not conducive to maintaining world balance and can be easily taken advantage of. But nah, she’s someone who’s constantly picking fights, then either gets matched or completely overwhelmed.

I liked the idea that she is more detached from the spiritual aspect and more active. But honestly I would've liked her to be a little more like Azula. That she grew up to be the Avatar in times of peace yet lacked any knowledge and skills of politics and diplomacy felt not logical. Plus, it was tiring to see her mess everything up the same way over and over again

Everyone was annoyed by the love triangle and Mako, but what was interesting was how they all grew out of that. I feel like that plot development doesn't get enough credit because of the bad taste it leaves in season 1-2.

I agree. Even though season 4 wasn't the greatest story wise. I did really like seeing the post time skip character development. Without the show having to say it you can tell the characters have grown up.

Unpopular opinion alert: I don't think original creators of the Avatar leaving are a sign the show won't be good. Avatar is a show with a lot of mass market appeal which is easier to make good with the mainstream methods which won't translate well into other franchises. Also I do think we often put a bit to much weight on the directors or producers. The editors, costume designers and composers are incredibly important and there are rarely the one person who will make the show good. What you need is the team. Like Team Avatar!
