Fun fact: Normally, in shonen Manga, when there is a flashback, the mangaka will copy and paste the previous panel(s) that the scene or conversation happened. Oda, on the other hand, redraws EVERY SINGLE flashback panel he shows, no matter how many. He believes that when someone buys an issue of Shonen Jump Weekly, they are paying for 16 pages of authentic and original art. Just goes to show his professionalism and his dedication to quality.
@Simar943 жыл бұрын

The scene where Sanji is outside in the rain overhearing Pudding’s reveal truly is Sanji at his lowest point imo. In that moment, it really did seem like he’s lost everything and that the entire world is against him. - He’s back with the abusive family he desperately wanted to avoid and forget. - He feels he has no choice but to go along with the forced marriage to protect his crew and his family at the Baratie. - He had to leave his crew, insult them and even physically hurt his captain whom he loves deeply. All this in front of Nami. - He now has to forget about his dream of ever seeing the All Blue. - He learns that his one source of comfort while in this living hell, Pudding, has been deceiving him all along and even plans to kill him. AND ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT - He can’t even smoke a cig because of the rain. The scene where Sanji is silently flicking his lighter to no avail in the rain while crying is one of the most heartbreaking panels in all of One Piece for me. It hurts everytime.

The panel where Jinbei's crew is telling him to live his own life and join the strawhats is fantastic to me. It is only Jinbei's face and that alone, but Jinbei is a design in OP that doesnt lend itself to emotionality the same way many of Oda's designs do. That panel portrays so many emotions in his face and it's so impressive. The surprise, love, and happiness in his face is incredible because again, Jinbei's design does not lend itself to those incredible amounts of emotion.

I'd like to mention that while Zeff trained Sanji in the art of chivalry, we can see a lot of the foundation for his "respect" for women in his flashbacks. Before he met Zeff, all of the men in Sanji's life (Judge and his brothers) abused and belittled him, while the women in his life (his mom and Reiju) were kind and supported Sanji's dreams and happiness.
@pubixcube273 жыл бұрын
This arc depicts what a genius Oda is when it comes to subtlety and patience, particularly regarding Sanji’s character. Writing typically happens in 3’s, and throughout the post timeskip Oda has portrayed Sanji as the failed martyr of the Straw Hats on 3 separate occasions: The first was on Dressrosa. Sanji intervenes against Doffy but is frozen by his strings. He tells the SH’s to leave him and escape with a Coup de Burst - But they refuse, and his sacrifice fails. The second came in Zou. Sanji willingly gives himself up to Bege in exchange for his crew's safety. He proceeds to write a note saying he will return in order to prevent Luffy and co. from pursuing him. This clearly doesn’t go as planned, and the purpose of Sanji’s sacrifice fails again. The third, and most impactful moment, takes place on Whole Cake Island as Sanji begrudgingly insults his crew and attacks his captain. This can be taken as Sanji’s last stance to save his friends, even if it meant being hated by them. It seems like the facade was a success in tricking Nami, who tells Luffy they should leave OR maybe she was just upset at Sanji’s lack of respect for Luffy. Regardless - Luffy, being the emotionally intelligent empath that he is, was not fooled. Ultimately Sanji’s attempt at sacrifice fails for the third and final time. By accepting Luffy’s help, he cements the new path he will lead going forward.

Nami's response shows that Oda keeps track of all his characters, more than he gets credit for, becos it's a continuation of the Usopp vs Luffy situation. It relates to the dynamic between Nami & Luffy, which is founded on luffy showing nami what being a pirate means for him. This goes back to their first meeting when nami still hated pirates. Whether it's a discussion on what is real treasure, the bar scene at Jaya or a duel between a captain & a crewmate. So yeh, she believes Sanji has done an Usopp and responds appropriately. Ofc she doesn't know the truth of Sanji's feelings unlike luffy. The same as when Zoro was ready to let Robin leave during the Galley-la HQ scene but luffy rejected it.

I love how BigMom is basically just a giant child, gifted with the powers of a god. She doesn't understand the world in any deeper level and just sees the world in simplistic terms. Racism is bad. Family is good. So, if everyone is family, everything is good. Or people being sad is bad. People being happy is good. So, I make everyone happy, even if I must force them to be. This is a childs understanding of how ethics and morality works and sounds like a moral logic, straight out of a childrens cartoon. So, if you give such a child godlike powers, BigMom is exactly what you get. Great character.

I love the Brook moment with Big Mom, not only for the "young lady" line, but also because of how well Brook knows Sanji despite knowing him for the least amount of time out of anyone in the crew. Brook was one of the few people who saw Sanji try to sacrifice himself when "Nothing Happened", and again on Dressrosa when he saw Sanji try to sacrifice himself by telling them to escape to Zou while he fought Doflamingo. None of those sacrifices worked, but Brook knows just how kind Sanji is and his drive to save others, and knows that Sanji wouldn't forgive himself if something happened to any of them while trying to save him.

What I love most about Sanji's backstory is that there are so many previous scenes that take on a whole new meaning now that we know about his past. For example, he says in Thriller bark that the reason he wanted the invisibility fruit was so that he could peep on women, but then we find out that he read the devil fruit encyclopedia as a kid before he became a pervert. So the reason why he originally wanted that fruit was probably so that he could escape from his abuse. In Water 7, when Robin tells the strawhats that she doesn't want anything to do with them anymore, Sanji can tell that she's lying and trusts that she has a good reason for doing what she's doing. He even tells Chopper ”A real man forgives a woman's lies”. Knowing what we know now, he was probably also thinking about Reiju when he said that. This shows that Sanji understands Reiju had to lie and pretend not to care about him in order to survive and he doesn't blame her for it. In Dressrosa, Sanji refuses to doubt Violet even after she tells him that she was decieving him. When she doesn't understand why, he says that he will never doubt a woman's tears. Again, this is probably because of Reiju. After his mother's death, Reiju was all he had. But Reiju was always keeping her emotions hidden, so it must've beeen hard for Sanji to know how she really felt. The only time Reiju showed a lot of emotion in front of him was when she cried while helping him escape from Germa. So him not being able to doubt a woman's tears is because he doesn't want to doubt his sister.

Yeah Sanji has not been as vocal about it as his disgust towards Judge and the rest of the family but he does love his sister...and it is tied to his kindness to women...as much as his love for his mother...so yeah it is likely that the Robin and Viola situations relate to how he understood Reiju and why, in spite of not actively defending him, realized that she had to bear it all...and it may also be why he tends to protect women and has initially not relied on their strength, until he accepted that when they willfully risk their lives, he has to trust them, like he does later with Robin in Wano

Did anyone else's heart just break when he was talking to Pudding and said something along the lines of how everyone in his life had kind of been his saviours in some way and that the last 13 years had just been like a holiday from his life, and the fact that that was his mentality that the majority of his life wasn't really his life, or the life that was meant for him, it was just a break from reality and now he was back and how it feels so inevitable and inescapable that he has just accepted it and counts himself lucky that the break lasted as long as it did - man that one hurt! It also made me kind of re-evaluate thriller bark where I know that both he and Zoro were willing to die there and completely give up everything for the whole crew and each other but when he said to Zoro 'well what about your dream' you know, what's the point of you giving that up now it feels kind of like part of it at least was rooted in his belief (that was reinforced by his family repeatedly) that his life and his dreams were less valuable than Zoro's or anyone else's on the crew (maybe I am really reading way to much into that)

I wouldn't say you're reading too much into it. Sanji is shocked to see Luffy show up on whole cake island even though he's personally seen Luffy drop everything to save someone he cares about. Mostly because the most important moment (for Sanji) in the arc is erased from his memory. Once we enters Wano Sanji is same old pervert Sanji, whic honestly I am very tired of. None of the Straw hats comic rutines wears of as much as Sanjis, its beyond annoying now. I loved Brook in this arc so much My favorite moment is still on Sabaody, when he tried to protect Zoro by standing in front of him, cracking a skull joke and being sent away by kuma. He knew the crew not long, but he knew about Zoros sacrifice, and he actually realised what kind of crew this is. And in the first moment, he had the chance, he sacrificed himself for an injured and exhausted crewmember. That's my No.1 Brook Moment - that's until the end of Whole Cake Island

When people speak about wholecake island, I'm always reminded about this phrase from Brook: "Sanji-san is a kind man." That quote will forever stay with me , because even with his flaws and his codes as a person, that he is a kibd person has been his most prevalent perspnality trait since the very moment he is introduced. That's why I like Sanji's character, that's why I believe he is one of Oda's masterpieces (Pun is very intended) in character writing.

A character moment of Sanji that goes unnoticed typically is that he says "What are *they* doing here?" when he noticed Luffy and Nami, when time and time again he saw Luffy and the straw hats including him fight for their nakama, but he always thinks so little of himself that he actually didn't believe they would even come.

Whole Cake is easily one of the best written arcs in One Piece. I love the character depths and the thematical cohesion about family, blood relatives vs found family, what brings a family together, etc. Even the fact that Oda managed to incorporate Capone Bege in this arc (the mafia family pirate) is a brilliant bit. One of my favorite lines in the series is when Luffy yells at Sanji to come back or he'll be starving to death and he says "without you I can't become pirate king". Luffy actually recruited Sanji before trying his cooking. He wanted Sanji after he saw him feed Gin. To him, a "chef so kind he will feed anyone who's hungry" is the only one fit to be on his ship. THAT is the kind of chef the pirate kings ship needs. Sanji isn't valuable because he is strong (despite being one of their top 3 fighters), but because he's kind. If Sanji broke his legs tomorrow he'd still be just as awesome to Luffy, which of course contrasts Judge who only sees Sanji as a weapon with useless emotions

Fun fact: Big Mama's ghosts are saying "Leave or life" in English. In Japanese, the word "leave" is pronounced "kiru", and is written in Hiragana in this case. But if you were writing it in Katakana instead...well, it'd still be "kiru", but since Katakana is often used for foreign words, you would essentially saying the English word, "kill". This makes the "leave or life" phrase essentially a wordplay trap, because by telling the ghosts you want to leave, you are also giving them permission to kill you on the spot. Clever Oda is clever.

One detail about Sanji's backstory shaping his personality that you missed is why he goes his own way during most arcs working behind the scenes taking on riskier jobs, it comes from the lack of self worth imbedded in him from his upbringing, he thinks it's better if he puts himself in danger rather than let others put themselves in danger, that's why he was also willing to take on Luffy's damage back in thriller bark and why zoro didn't let him, cause he knew sanji was prepared to die whereas he would cling to life with all he had.

I do genuinely wait for these videos every Friday after work and Whole Cake island is one of my favorite arcs, probably because I really like Sanji and it broke me in ways can't explain. What happened to Mark was truly tragic and rage inducing. Its absolutely unfair and unfortunate but I am glad that everyone in the community is standing up for him and are in solidarity with him. I wish KZbin would get their stuff together and help creators out already and update their content id system. That being said, hope everything's going well with your family. I still think Sanji's childhood was the saddest among the straw hats. Most of them had to endure tragedy and the deaths of loved ones, but Sanji had to to pass through something worse. He was abused by people who were supposed to be by his side and grew up thinking he is useless. That makes his character arc amazing, because the flashback makes us understand that the reason Sanji is always sacrificing himself for the others is because he was made to believe that he was a burden as a child.
@luffysanji98403 жыл бұрын
That makes me sad. This isn't my original idea, but there's some potential foreshadowing about Sanji's childhood back in Jaya. While the crew was talking to Montblanc Cricket in his home, Cricket challenges the crew, asking what they would know about the feelings of a child who grew up being ridiculed for sharing the blood of their family (in Cricket's case, Norland). After he says that, the next couple panels focus on Sanji, who is facing away from everyone else. His posture could be said to be pensive, if you want to read (possibly too far) into it. It may be a coincidence that Oda drew the panels in that way, but if it was intentional it'd be an amazing piece of foreshadowing.

It might just be because of your pretty unique position as someone who didn't get into One Piece familiar with the medium, but you wouldn't think someone who can't remember a name as simple as Jack would be able to see through, much less even discuss, details as minute as Doffy's attacks being based on the people's screams or the parallel between Nami and Jinbe's selflessness. In both cases those were things I only realized from watching your reviews! You really are like Luffy in that you forget the more superficial things like names or being able to accurately draw appearances, but in exchange have a keen and deep perception. I watched the first 10 minutes and I realized exactly how far she read into the arc. That being said, its Oda's skill to make people feel emotions like this for characters in a story is just amazing.

Great analysis as usual. Big Mom is one of my favorite characters, and you picked up on some very important things with her. The Four Emperors are currently the characters closest to becoming the pirate king, and that it reflected in the really interesting ways each of them are paralleled and juxtaposed to Luffy, more so than most earlier villains in the series. Big Mom is in many ways a warped, evil version of Luffy. Big Mom's island is a failed attempt to create a land where all races can live together, whereas Luffy will most likely achieve this for real at the end of the story. Both are tremendously and sometimes even destructively gluttonous (Luffy ruining all their supplies on the way to the island is a case in point). Both characters also greatly value their 'family', but Mom's love is warped and toxic, whereas Luffy genuinely cares for his crew and other loved ones. This also ties in with the broader theme of blood ties vs 'adopted' family in One Piece: despite their closer biological relationship, the Big Mom pirates will never be as close of a family as the Straw Hats.

Whole Cake my favorite post timeskip arc, and I have no idea why. (It's also amazing how many people are discussing the Mark situation.)

The crazy thing is Oda even showed us Pudding way back in the end of Fishman Island when we got our first look at Big Mom since she was sitting there listening to Mama talk, but because it was so casual most of us never even realized who she was or that she was going to be important.

I find it awesome that despite the competition all around One Piece content you still support each other, even if the theme ties everyone around KZbin. Glad you're back!

Hey Merphy welcome back! Wishing you the best with your new addition into your family ❤️ I'm so glad you are enjoying WCI so far because it's one of my top favourite arc! The scene where luffy said to sanji " I can't become a pirate king without you" hits me so damn hard 😭 Big Mom is a very interesting villain hoping you can make a character analysis video about her after you finish this arc if you want to no pressure :) Brook is absolutely MVP for this arc no question. Can't wait for the rest of your review ❤️

Luffy and sanji fight and the panels that followed brought tears to my eyes. Like a lot of tears more than usopp and Luffy which I didn't think was possible.

One detail that gets me every time is Luffy saying to Sanji, "Without you, I can't become king of the pirates". This is the only time in the series other than the death of Ace when Luffy has stated that he can't or won't become pirate king. Really tells you how much Sanji means to him.

He also said on Saboady when Usopp almost asked Rayleigh to tell them about the One Piece that he'd quit trying to become the Pirate King if they knew anything and had to go on a boring adventure.
