It is insane how much YOU have defined my reading tastes! 1. The Dandelion Dynasty- picked it up last December. An absolute masterpiece of a series. The THEMES, oh, the THEMES. Jia is a masterclass in character writing that would put Walter White to shame in an adaptation. Words cannot sum up how much I love this series. 2. Realm Of The Elderlings- this is where our tastes diverge. Let's just say you're WRONG about Fitz🙈😂 3. Beartown- Benjamin Ovich, that's it, that's the review. 4. One Piece- need I say more? It's One Piece! 5. The Stormlight Archive- bumped down a few spots since 2020 but maybe Wind And Truth will have it go up. Perhaps our reading tastes are similar enough to warrant me to pick up Gentleman Bastards? Who knows lol

My top 10 "stories" (difficult to fix a medium haha, so I'll cheat) ATM: 1. Malazan Book of the Fallen 2. Berserk 3. One Piece 4. Hunter x Hunter 5. Kharkanas (yes yes, I know. It is also Malazan and also Steven Erikson. I cheat. However, it is VERY different in style, approach and what it tries to achieve. This one has the potention to be number 1 upon the release of the third book) 6. The Lord of the Rings (I've come to prefer the novel to the movies, but I will love the movies until the day I die) 7. The Wheel of Time 8. Kingkiller Chronicle 9. Monster 10. Jojo As you can see I really love manga and anime, which is why there aren't many books in the top 10. But here is a book series top 10 (all fantasy atm, because I just love the genre so much. But I hope it changes): 1. Malazan 2. Kharkanas 3. LotR 4. WoT 5. Kingkiller 6. First Law 7. The Black Company 8. Stormlight 9. His Dark Materials 10. Earthsea

Looking forward to this list after 2024 and you have caught up on Dresden. While Dead Beat is definitely a top book in the series, you still have the best to come with more and better story lines, character moments, and world building. I'm reading Lies of Locke Lamora right now for the first time because of your unending adoration of it. Also, I maintain that Toll the Hounds (Malazan Book of the Fallen #8) will (likely) end up being your favourite of the series. We'll be here when you finish the remaining four. And again, an interview with Erikson would be neat when you do finish the series. P.S. - Book of the Fallen is not the only series in Malazan. There's a completed six-book series (Novels of the Malazan Empire by Ian Cameron Esslemont (who co-created the world with Erikson)), two trilogies pending completion (Kharkanas (2/3 there) and Witness(1/3 there)), and a handful of comic-oriented novellas following Bauchelain and Korbal Broach.

My biggest suprised of last year: I actually started and finished Lies of Lock Lamora in 2023. I was taking forever and I was overwhelmed with multiple books at the time as I was also listening to the Phantom of the Opera (the origonal book), checked out and was listening to The Black Griffin by Mercades Lackey (as a buddy read), *and* I was listening to Lamora on audible as well due to trying to do things. I was also still trying to read Deerskin by McKinley, picked up two other libraries books at the time (An Exchange of Gifts and Gwenhyfar: the White Spirit), Listened/Read to A Natural History of Dragons as a buddy read, And even picked up Fifth Season so I could do Oblisk Gate as a buddy read.... Lies of Lock Lamora was actually finished and part of the 8 books I read in 2023. And I'm glad to say that I absolutely enjoyed it. There is *one* part I wished wasn't in there.... But I'm also one who's not exactly fond of "Fridging" as a trope (which this part was) and the barrel of a particular kind wasn't nesscary for a particular situation. I *get* why it was done, I do actually get the reasoning behind it, but I felt like it could have made the figure in question more terrifying if done differently without that trope. (I'm trying so hard not to spoil it for those who are curious as it's part of the plot), but the rest of the book? I enjoyed it absolutely. So much so that I do want to read the other books... I just hope that trope doesn't show it's ugly head again in the others. It was a slightly more unuique way of handling something akin to a Theives Guild (It's not totally unique but it was just enough to have me curious about the world and I liked how they handled the gods), but it's very 1700s Italy inspired (Venice to be exact) very much similar to how much I loved Cornillia Funke's Middle Grade/YA "The Thief Lord" is set in Venice and uses the underbelly of the city as a setting. Now they are very different vibes and VASTLY different themes, but I see the setting similarties. (Also the Theif Lord I think is set in the 90s/2000s when it was published and closer to an modern earth Urban low-fantasy compared to the Historical Urban second world low-Fantasy of Gentlemen Bastards.) I also really enjoyed A Natural History of Dragons, and Fifth Season. I, unfortantly, had to DNF Oblisk Gate for now, not because I didn't like it but some things came up and my focus on the book wasn't there as it was hitting particular things a little too sorely for the time. I do plan to pick it up again when my mental health is better. I also DNFed "The Tower at Stoney Wood" but that was because I wanted to throw the book across the room for... let's just say choices of plot direction for now. (this is long as is... much like how I am not going into an rant on how absolutely annoyed I was with A King of Elfland's Daughter because... that's a thing. Great Ideas.... execusion is... yeetable.) I still stand that Phantom of the Opera is not a Romance... it's a Horror Thiller that shows the dangers of what women go through on a theatrical level. Though This year I decided to start the Dresden Files series at least! (Hopefully the 22 queue doesn't last that long for the library audiobook and the 7 queue doesn't take that long either for the Ebook from the library.)

Thanks for sharing. I just finished book one of the gentlemen bastards last night. Enjoyed it. Though myself it won’t land on my top 5, yet. It strikes me as very much written like television. The epilogues at times irked me especially when he started one right after a climatic scene. But they worked. I am interested in that first contact series you mention also the hockey book. Myself I am a huge hockey fan. Hockey and books that’s my passion. Infact last night I was watching my team and the intermission hit and I’m like ok, we got 15 mins let’s strike a chapter of Gentleman bastards. The hockey story you mention is so relevant to the world today. I will have ti pick it up. I have a suggestion for you to read. It’s a classic sci-fi series. I beleive by Gentry Lee and Arthur C Clarke. It’s been a long time since I read…like 20+ years but it has stuck in my mind all this time and very much on my list for a reread as I loved it back then. The series is The Rama series. It’s basically this alien ship appears I. Our solar system. It’s one of this cylindrical cigar shaped ships. It abducts people and they are placed in various ecosystems on the ship no one knows why but there are other beings on the ship, capture just like people. The main ones were these octopi/spider people who communicated through colour. Anyways the story basically is how to survive now I. That alien ship. Who else is also on the ship. What is the purpose of the shop. Etc etc. Perhaps give it a shot if you have a blank space o. Your reading list.

Gonna have to do 20 next year! I'm so intrigued by Bear Town. It doesn't sound like a series, it sounds like the kind of thing that would be a standalone. I love hockey, and hate SA of course, and sweden is cool, so I may have to check it out. I'll check out that novella of his first.

I have a web novel to introduce to you, it's called The Lord of the mysteries here's a part of it. Gehrman would rarely expose his feelings because, well, who would even feel for an aloof murderous man like him? He had isolated almost everyone in his life for the sake of finding a way back to his world, but that proved to be a mistake and now he was left hopeless and alone. Gehrman would rarely admit it. So would Klein, but he felt lonely-he felt like he was all alone in this world. And that, hurt him. Gerhman sighed, looking at the empty desk within the Sefirah Castle. Creeping Hunger lay on the desk quietly, afraid to disturb his solituxs. Times like this made him miss his Nighthawk days, ignorant of the greater scheme and simply enjoying days with his companions. But now... all he had left was nothing. Even his purpose, mission was struck down from him. Gerhman, for once, allowed himself to admit he was hurt. Hurt by loneliness, hurt by madness, and hurt by the emptiness of everything. If only, if only there was someone that could understand him. Perhaps existing would be more tolerable. But who was he who desire that? Who was he to request that? Caged by his own aloof mask and fate, he didn't let anyone enter his inner world. He expected no one to enter it-he was after all, a murderous aloof man. He would never think someone can understand him and empathize with him. He dug his own grave with his decisions, and it was fine (not). Woosh! At that moment, impervious of his monologues, a bright crimson light erupted as a blonde haired woman appeared on one of the seats. “Good morning, Mr. World! How's your day?” But to his surprise, there was someone that saw differently. Like Leonard, but she was different. She was like a brightly lit star, shining everywhere she goes. But that wasn't the main point; there was no sense of malice at all from her. He couldn't sense anything. Audrey Hall was as genuine as she gets. In this godforsaken world of madness, she was the light that guided the World in the right direction. She was Justice. Praise the Fool Klien Moretti 😊

I'm glad you liked the HHGTTG books. My personal favourite version of that story is the original radio series, which came first. Well worth checking out if you love Douglas Adams. It might have the effect of making the books seem a bit stodgy and slow. His two Dirk Gently books are also worth a read.
