Stu, these videos are priceless! One small recommendation would be to shoot these with a shutter speed that follows the 180 degree rule. If you're shooting at 24 frames per second, set the camera's shutter to 48 or 50 for the most natural looking motion blur. Unless you're shooting with the higher shutter to better show the action of your fingers playing, but for a more natural look, I would stick to 48. Can't tell you how great these videos are for people to get an educated perspective on the differences between makes and models!

Thanks for this review! We purchased the FP30X, great piano! - But BIG problem with "Roland Piano App" which is great, extremely helpful (almost a "must" for a piano without any display). But it has a BIG PROBLEM so far: it ALWAYS demands internet connection to work. And that's NOT what is stated in Google Play Store (where it says it will require internet "THE FIRST TIME" you use the app with a Piano, and for "some" features as well). -- We're Musicians who purchased a Music Instrument, not a mobile device which is aimed to internet! We perform in different places, where internet is NOT always available, or it may fail. -- Many Roland Piano don't have even a Display, so "Roland Piano App" IS BIG HELP for faster/easier Settings, and also to use ADDITIONAL SOUNDS/TONES that are not available directly from the Piano (but they're there inside) So we contacted Roland (Via our registered instrument-Support) requesting that the app does not demand internet for those features that don't require it. They said they would put in a "wish list" to consider... This should be considered much more seriously than a "wish"... -- We do hope Roland realizes the big importance of using the app without internet AND FIX THIS, it's a Piano! We encourage everyone using this great app to contact Roland, requesting this, because it would improve and help a LOT the customers & musicians experience who trust on Roland.

You're very welcome! Thank you for tuning in and congrats on your Roland FP30X! I am happy to hear that you have been enjoying it. I am sorry to hear about your issues with Roland Piano App. With that said, Roland is a company that is very receptive to user feedback from my experiences. Hopefully, things are corrected so there is a way to access some of the features offline. Our fingers will be crossed for you!
@PabloVazquezVisualArts2 жыл бұрын
@@MerriamPianos Thank you so much for your awesome reviews, indeed of great help to take a purchasing decision. The problem with the app was completely unexpected, since on Google Play it says it will require internet "the first time". We never expected that the app is demanding internet every time, otherwise it does not work, even for the most basic settings. We're VERY concerned, since nobody replied our 2 emails sent to Developers of the app, even after receiving the zendesk ticket numbers, (Developer email at Google Play), and the only response was from Support from the registered Piano, telling it would be passed as wish list. That was 2 months ago. The app was updated 3 days ago (Jan 23, 2023), adding new Piano models, but still requiring internet every time. It would be fantastic if you could contact them and/or make a review of the app showing that the internet "requirement" is a BIG limitation for Musicians, who travel to perform to places where internet is not always available, or even fail at home/studio, hence making impossible to use the app, which is a huge help, since lot of Roland Pianos don't have a Display. It has no sense at all to demand internet for features that don't require it. Also, the AWESOME extra sounds available ONLY through the app (obviously they're already in the piano, but for some reason not available directly...) Hence, if no internet, no extra sounds for performing when traveling... So we got mixed feelings, amazing piano with a limiting/ed app... - If you can help, it would be extremely appreciated!! Thank you so much. IMPORTANT P.S.: "Piano Partner 2" app, which allows Extra Sounds for FP10 does NOT require internet connection to work, but sadly is not compatible with FP30X. So for FP30X the only way for Extra Sounds (which lot are trully amazing) is "Roland Piano App"...

Since I'm a customer, they'd probably let me have it for $649. Is that good?
@MerriamPianos2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! It is technically possible, but not exactly recommended for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, we strongly recommend leaving any type of repairs that involve opening up a digital piano to be left to a professional technician. Secondly, there are a number of reasons why manufacturers choose specific speakers or design speakers a certain way. Having a more expensive or higher-quality speaker may not necessarily lead to a better sound. The speakers have to work symbiotically with the rest of the instrument, which includes being voiced in a way that connects well with the piano tone itself. In terms of the price, $649 US sounds like an excellent deal based on our general price points here in Canada as a reference. :)

Which digital pianos have low key noises?
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
That is a great suggestion! I will share it with Stu and the production team and, perhaps, we can cover it in an upcoming video. :) As for pianos with low key noise, the Casio PXS instruments have light and very quiet actions. Hi Merriam Music, Hi thank you for your demonstration very nice, I am an owner of a Roland G1000 and sadly the LCD is fading and I can't find a part, so I am looking for another portable keyboard, what my dilemma is I have always used the GS MIDI via the floppy discs for backing me up as a one man band, I realise that is very old technology, I am wondering as you say the Roland plays midi can I download all my midi files to a USB and plug it into the keyboard for playback as I dont want to mess with Ipads ect. or do you know of another model of any brand that can do this, your advice would be great await your reply with thanks Kind regards Noeline
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Hi Noeline! Brent here! Thanks so much for writing in! :) The good news is that virtually all digital pianos now are MIDI compatible, which means that you can certainly transfer MIDI files over via USB and play them back through the piano. However, with that said, if these are multi-track accompaniment tracks, things get a bit more complicated and it might actually be better to find an instrument that has a plethora of built-in accompaniment options. In my opinion, the Roland FP-E50 is very well aligned with what you're looking for! In addition to an amazing piano experience, the model provides an exceptional array of arranger and accompaniment options. You can check out Stu's review of the model here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKOum62BiLhsmc0 Thanks and all the best! :)

Hello Brent, Thank you for your quick reply to my request and problem, when you say you can transfer midi files over via USB I am not very clear, can the midi files, these are commercial GS midi files 50's sixties seventies etc., I can transfer these from the floppy that I have been using to a USB via my computer they are all edited in my keys and so on, but then I want to plug my edited midi files straight into the keyboard via the USB without the use of blue tooth computer etc. can this be done or is via computer direct they only way, if not this model is there another model out there (not necessarily Roland) sorry for the trouble and question your help is so much appreciated, await your reply kind regards Noeline

Could it be that they simply put the better speakers there? What's the sound difference in headphones?
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
There have definitely been some upgrades to the speaker system and overall sonic experience. I don't know if it is a placebo effect, but I do notice a slightly more refined sound in the headphone experience for the FP30X. With that said, in my opinion, it is less drastic than the speaker sound differences.

except for Casio 1000 which is much cheaper and has newer action sensors, but Merriam strangely forgets to mention the Privia sensor in current video when he compares fp30x to Kawai, Korg and Yamaha. Yep, just forgot no big deal
@dang5793 жыл бұрын
@@tonyabram9281 The PXS was my first choice when I started looking into keyboards. It has a more plastic tone and the weight distribution is uneven with black keys and white keys. Pianoforever's video has a demonstration on that. I also remember reading a comment about the lack of dynamic range which is bad for beginners. The main upsides to the PXS series are design and portability with battery power.

Will you be doing similar videos for the FP90X? Thanks.
@Jason759134 жыл бұрын
badass sound, FP30x is warmer and less metallic I don't like that they loaded many more sounds, we wouldn't like for Yamaha and Roland to start competing on quantity at the expense of quality later on, they already do this with their performance keyboards like MX88 and Juno-DS88.

Huge fan sir... how do we compare Roland FP 30X(with kdp 70 pedal and ksc 70 stand) with Roland RP 501R ?
@MerriamPianos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for supporting our channel! :) The Roland FP30X and Roland RP501R have a lot of similarities, particularly in terms of the touch and sound given that they both use the PHA4 action and SuperNATURAL tone engines. With that said, they will obviously offer you something a little different in terms of aesthetics. Furthermore, the FP30X is a newer model and, accordingly, has Roland's most cutting-edge tech. Thanks and hope this helps! :)

Biggest questions... 1) can you play quickly on the X version? The previous version had key travel which made this difficult. 2) are the speakers underneath on both, resulting in a muffled sound ontop of a table (without a stand) 3) what is the size and weight difference
@kidflersh78073 жыл бұрын
answer to 1: key travel is kinda intentional. You can play fast, you just gotta adapt to it. Key travel is a feature of ALL acoustic pianos, so it's replicated in digital pianos
@LagunaLeonhart3 жыл бұрын
@@kidflersh7807 maybe I'm not using the right terminology but this was a problem specific to the Roland fp series. Pressing the same key quickly in succession made it more difficult for faster pieces.
@amcdonal86VT3 жыл бұрын
I feel like the polyphony rating is often misrepresented, as if the 128 limit just means you can't play 128 notes at the same time. But doesn't that also count all of the "strings" that are having sympathetic resonance? It's entirely possible a beginner or intermediate pianist will come up against that limit.

Hi Stu. great channel and vlogs. Question, you don't seem to review any of the yamaha hybrid or clavinova models. Is this because the shop doesn't stock them ?. I'd love to know your opinion on the latest CLP releases. Particularly, the 775 ans 785.

@MerriamPianos2 жыл бұрын
Thank you kindly! Unfortunately, there are a lot of latency issues when it comes to using wireless Bluetooth headphones. This is the case with the vast majority of digital instruments. Hopefully, it will become a more viable option in the near future for all Bluetooth-equipped digital piano models! :)

The sound difference between them, 1/4” outs, new BMC chip and the USB Audio interface function make it a hands down ‘yes’ for the 30x. Worth the bucks, for sure (IMO). Thanks!! Stu

Hi Javier, this is exactly my dilemma, have one fp30 booked for CAD 899, whereas fp 30x is 1099. Saying that, this would be my first piano and I have never even touched one before. Was looking for a fp-10 (CAD 759) but they are in backorder almost everywhere so got that deal on fp 30. However, in my case, if I can be half as good as I am imagining myself to be in 4 years, I shall buy an acoustic upright (Yamaha U3) or maybe a baby grand (from Kawai). So, I would like to put that CAD 200 difference into a good piano teaching app to get me to that level. Would really appreciate your thoughts on this.
