@J S I'm a beginner. yeah that pianoforever guy is opinionated and has a preference for es110, and will never change. I felt the action was too springy on p125 less acoustic like, but they would be great for young kids, the sound was brighter. I have not tried es110. I want something heavier to train my fingers. When I'm awesome, I can always upgrade the action, I can't play fast enough to notice the speed at which the keys return. The speakers are ok, and might get a monitor speaker. It's hard to ignore the huge amount of other features too. Also where I am there is very little difference in price between p125.

Your videos are great. I bought the FP-30X based on this. I am a beginner at 50 and I wanted something that had a great piano sound and action that felt something like an acoustic piano. So far the FP-30X is great. (UPDATE: SO ACTUALLY... I bought the 30X and It's very good, but I found having to use the app for almost everything was a pain and the downward firing speakers sound muffled to me. I was going to return it and get the 60X, but it is back ordered for more than a month. So I went crazy and bought the 90X. Not only does it sound better, but the PHA-50 action feels incredible and way more responsive than the PHA-4. I'm poor, but I'm satisfied.)

The Kawai 110 / 120 also has downward firing speakers. I own the 110 and hate the piano key + function combo with no screen, as well as the downward firing speakers. I used it on a tabletop and the sound through the speakers sucked, even though there is a "tabletop" sound setting, as here. Plus, I now have downstairs neighbors. I've been looking at the Kawai 4520 (upward speakers but deeper, 14" to the 30X's 11", you can see why, they fire the speakers down and it saves real estate). Since the reviews are rarely about speaker direction, your comment saved me from going to try out the 30 at a store. It's a rule out for me, as well as having to use the app. I like controls. The Kawai 520 is $1300, but I'd rather pay that than be frustrated. So, if you see this comment, thanks!

i think one of the really great features of the fp 30 x is that it has an audio interface..inside which allows you to record audio into your computer via the usb cable along with midi...this makes recording audio so simple....eliminating the need to record the audio using line out cables...also if you have Vst software on your computer such as Garritan or Vienna Symphonic etc.....you can have the sound produced coming thru the speakers on the Roland FP-30x when you play on the Roland,,,

Roland FP-30X has been an entry-level in the US with a lower price. Here in Brazil, it's considered as an intermediate/pro instrument with our high costs. I saw all the reviews with Cassio, Yamaha, and Roland. This model appears to be the best by the processor, hammer-action, finishing material (the piano feel). The low quantity of sounds can be easily solved by using a connection to a computer.

I don't own an FP30X but did check it out in a piano store and I'm quite certain there are several levels of sensitivity for the action on the keys, the light setting is very easy to depress, and the higher levels make it more like a new acoustic piano, i.e., a little more difficult to depress the keys. @mfurman3 жыл бұрын
@@extendedlabsuhd1982 I had the same worries as you. As I mentioned, I tried a few digital pianos in this price range. I thought that A-88 mkII controller would have a better (still PHA-4) keyboard because of the price but it did not and lacked some conveniences of digital piano. I had my worries about the reliability of PHA-4 (plus some clicking of the action after a year or so) and that is why I got (simultaneously) P125 and ES110. Sound was less of an issue for me, I admit, but I perhaps liked ES110 a bit more but could not stand its very noisy (on the way up) keys. Yamaha P125 was better but the action was too light for me (~50g) and I was missing escapement of PHA-4. I tried some low end Yamaha Clavinova (nice action but still plastic keys, too expensive for what it worth to me and not portable!) and P-515 that had too heavy action for me (~88g). I got FP-30X and I like the features, the sound and PHA-4 action seems to be better than on FP-10 and A88 mkII. It is a bit heavier (65g) but I like it. By the way, I tried PHA50 action and I prefer PHA-4

@@mfurman Very comprehensive reply! thanks again. I think i will go with the FP30x from Amazon.. due to the warranty being more reliable. I would get the P125, but its due for replacement soon, so likely the 125 will drop in price and will be massively outdone with its successor judging from the new DGX 670. The FP30X is new- so resale value will stay high for some time. Hopefully I am as lucky as you are with the action being reliable. What I suspect is happening to people with FP30/10 PHA4 issues is that they were buying models that stood in a warehouse for 3 years.. the grease dried out. As the FP30x is new, should not be an issue for some time.

Regardless of who its marketed to, it is by far the best sounding and best feeling artificial piano with built in speakers I’ve ever heard. When they say it has ivory feeling keys and grand piano action, i have to say that is absolutely right. If I was blindfolded and someone told me I was playing a grand piano i would believe them and I would assume it was a very very good one. Far better than a modern steinway. I would believe it it was a 1940s steinway that had just been overhauled. It vibrates the floor like a grand. I’ve had the fortune to be able to play it several times at my girlfriends house, maybe it’s the room, maybe it’s the feel but it’s astonishing to me, it blows me away every time I play it. PS there’s a sweet water review where a dude gives it a one star review and he complains about it not fitting in a case he already owns. Repeatedly calling it a “A STAGE PIANO” in all caps. I’ve heard the piano being recommended for intimate gigs implying that it’s perfect for a gig small enough for the built in speakers by themselves. But this guy keeps calling it “A STAGE PIANO.” So, this guy isnt even a pro. And yet he expects a $700 piano to be a gigging piano and he doesn’t to look at the specs. It’s a stupid choice for a “A STAGE PIANO” because why haul the speakers along with you? It’s extra weight for no reason. It’s not good for your back and you dont need speakers on stage. I’m just venting because you cant reply to reviews. Especially bad reviews that are the consumers fault. I just wanted to call him an “ass for brains dipshit loser dumbass idiot moron” i mean, that’s tame compared to what i wanted to call him. It’s why you honk at people who nearly kill you while driving, you have to call out stupid people who leave damaging reviews or cut you off. Okay. Id you read this, you’re one hell of a person. I’m not complaining, I’m calling out bad behavior here because i couldnt call him an idiot directly.

I bought a Yamaha P125 few months ago since it's default piano sound is very pleasant and can handle many genres. But this one looks way better value for money. Definitely would have bought this if it was available then. Yamaha P125 default piano and Epiano sounds are still very very nice but without the other amazing features of FP30X. Also wish they named this device somethig else instead of 30X since its far superior than FP30. Thanks Stu. Your presentation is top notch.

I am looking forward to replacing my Yamaha P35B with Roland- Yamaha didn't upgrade their Microsoft app for the new MIDI. I salvaged the situation with the excellent Roland WM 1D. I am surprised that the Bluetooth does not go direct to Headphones however that is not a problem as I simply plug my Sennheiser Bluetooth transmit into the headphone socket and use the Bluetooth on the headphones for both my Piano and my stereo system so the Roland will undoubtedly work the same way. Excellent review as always Thank you.

Yeah dude, it has left and right output… that would be the easiest way, but it sounds so good with the speakers I would probably recommend that as you would with a guitar amp.
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
A blend of both could also be quite effective if you deal with any phasing that could muddy up the sound.

Great review! As an FP-30 owner (bought about one year ago), I would highly recommend FP-30x for anyone looking for a first digital piano or returning to playing piano after a long break (as myself). In my case I was not sure that I will continue playing that is why I considered FP-30 as the best option in 2020 from price-quality perspective and FP-30x looks like the best option for 2021 🙂

Is it possible to use the FP 30X inside a DAW as a MIDI controller for VST plugins?
@pianojourney52563 жыл бұрын
@@Thadnill I’m sorry, not sure I understood your question correctly. I have a very simple setup where FP-30 is connected as a MIDI controller via USB to a laptop running Pianoteq. This setup works just fine 🙂 Pretty sure it’s the same for FP-30x.

@@pianojourney5256 Interesting! So can you use other VST - software libraries with your piano when you use it as a MIDI controller? @pianojourney52563 жыл бұрын
@@Thadnill I’m pretty sure you can. That’s simple, FP-30 acts as a MIDI controller whenever it connected via USB port to a computer, it follows MIDI protocol and sends the data from the keys and pedal.

Yes I got plenty good things out of this comprehensive review and thank you for taking the trouble to make the video. I wish you had played some clear harmonic polyphony with sustain pedal down as your fast playing of rather wild dissonant modern voicings avoids us hearing the real decay time on a sustained chord or run. I was waiting to hear you play a medium loud octave in the bass to discover just how much oomph it has simulating a grand piano bass strings decaying tone. Flashing all over the keyboard in staccato fashion just makes the piano sound tinny. I was also hoping you'd talk about the touch-weight and it's variability as I am hoping to buy one of these and have to go have a demo to find out just how heavy or light the keys are. Anyway thanks and I'll give this a like of course.

We appreciate it. :) I will certainly pass along the feedback to Stu and our production team. Beautiful playing by Stu. I love the richness of the FP30X features, but to me the bass end is exaggerated, and the middle doesn't cut through. I'd say the heavy processing leaves the sound too wet and boomy. Of course a great thing is how much you can edit the sound, but I don't want to have to reprogramme a piano a lot just to get what seems like a natural sound to me. This is why I rejected the FP50. Could be psychoacoustics giving me an unfair bias here, but I prefer the P-125/P-121 and PX-S3000 sounds. Even the ES110 sounds nicer to me on the main piano tone. This instrument might be great on stage, which is where Roland pianos/keyboards do tend to shine, but as a practice instrument? No, not for me. Despite all this, I have suppressed my preferences and suggested this instrument to a friend who admires Roland products and would have bought the old FP30 if only it had decent outputs.

As @joewger mentioned, I too was under the impression that the FP-30x has USB Audio. It's not mentioned explicitly in the owner's manual, but on page 12 Function C1 is "Input Volume". The description says: " Adjusting the Bluetooth/USB Audio Volume - You can adjust the volume of the audio signal that is sent from Bluetooth or the USB Computer port." It's odd to say "sent from Bluetooth or the USB Computer port". We know the Bluetooth audio is receive-only, and "C1" is "Input Volume". So, it seems that the USB HOST port might be a full 2-way USB Audio Interface. HOWEVER, the FP-60x/90x Owner's manual very clearly mentioned USB Audio in several places. They also have separate Input Volume for Bluetooth Audio and USB Audio. There's no question there. So, I guess I'm not convinced the FP-30x actually has USB Audio. Manuals have errors and oversights, as do piano reviewers who probably can't be up to speed on every new instrument that they review. I'm looking forward to hearing from somebody who has actually connected a computer to the USB Audio Interface of the FP-30x. *** UPDATE *** The Roland web site says "The FP-30X even features USB audio/MIDI connectivity". www.roland.com/ca/products/fp-30x/ So, who do you believe?
@NevynTheWizard3 жыл бұрын
It does. I just got one yesterday and use it with Pianoteq - I don't need my usb audio interface anymore - the sound goes back to the FP30X via usb cable and through the speakers or you can use line out for that.

I just got a white one yesterday. It has an audio interface - I use it with VST. Unfortunately there are a few cons: I can't find a good ASIO driver - the one which gets installed automatically in Windows is by no means low-latency - I have to use ASIO4ALL with it. I'll probably switch back to my usb audio interface, but it works well if you need to take it out - you grab your computer, the keys and one usb cable. 😄 Another thing which annoys me is it doesn't remember all the settings, only select ones. Such things like MIDI channel, local control is forgotten when you switch it off. Good the keyboard velocity is remembered. The speakers are really good, I can confirm - as far as built-in speakers go, of course. And the keyboard does seem tighter - exactly as Stu said 😁 In general I'm happy - I have to build a custom desk for it now - previously I had a full size digital piano, so I didn't need it.

Sorry, I got cut off. I meant to say that one thing no reviewer has mentioned is the spacing between adjacent black keys. The middle finger of my right hand jams between black keys on a Yamaha P-125 depressing three keys, but not on the Roland BF30X. While I preferred the Yamaha piano tone I had to go with the Roland for its slightly wider spacing.

20:08 me too. The app compensates for the lack of a display, which sets this board into the lower shelf, making the FP-60X appear to be on another level, which is arguable. The little difference of price currently between the FP-30X and the RD-88 is what is making me undecided . I think the RD-88 can be a longer term board , if I can afford it.
