I just came from two music stores and was pleased to find the Casio PX-S5000, so now I have an opinion about it regarding its sound and action. I also played the Roland RD88, FP90X, FP30X, F701, Casio CDP-S110, CDP-S360, Kawai KDP75, CN29, CA49, Yamaha P45, P125, P125a, P515, YDP-145, YDP-S55, YDP165, among other models. Playing a model in person is quite a different experience from the perception I form before I see them in person. Specifications can also be very deceiving. For example, you would think the Roland FP90X is super loud with its 60 watts of amplifier power and the Yamaha P45 should sound really quiet with its weak 6 watts amplifiers... but I turned them both to their maximum volume in the store today, and the P45 sounded much fuller and probably even louder than the FP90X.
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
It is always a good idea to test things out in person as spec sheets are ultimately just words. The physical and in-person experience as well as a player's connectivity to the musical experience provided by an instrument will certainly always be paramount. :)

@@alexp2082 Thank you for asking me. I find the wooden inserts in the plastic keys of the PX-S5000 a nice aesthetic addition to the PX-S1100, but the feel of the keys is still not substantial. The piano samples that Casio put in their digital pianos are not very realistic to my ears, and their speaker system is weak, particularly it doesn't have bass due to its design. But these are just my impressions, it is hard to say anything objective that everyone will agree on when it comes to digital pianos. Hope that helps.

The Roland FP-E50 doesn't quite have the same piano experience as the FP-60X, but it is hard to deny the cost-to-value ratio it presents with its impressive feature offering. I’ve owned and used my lovely Roland FP80 for several years, and more recently I’m using the Yamaha P115, which I do regret buying, because the keybed is glossy plastic, not a patch on my FP80, which is the stunning ivory feel PHA4! The Yammy gets sticky and unbearable to play live after about 30 mins! It’s going. I mainly just piano & a string pad is all I require, so me thinks the Roland FP30X will be a better option, plus it’s also lighter. Great review and love the detailing throughout. 👍🏻🎹👏🏼

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks! We're glad you enjoyed the review. The core piano experience isn't too different between the FP-E50 and FP30X, but, I suppose, there is an argument to be had for the additional features and sounds that come with the FP-E50. These types of elements can help freshen up practices and keep a beginner student engaged and motivated. Thanks and hope this helps! :)

I am looking forward to trying out the FP30X, and potentially purchasing it, as it’s lightweight, has the lovely PHA4 keybed and as it’ll be put through my KC150 Roland amp, the actual small downward facing onboard speakers aren’t a game changer for me. It’s mainly for wedding and corporate piano solo bookings, which is why I don’t need all the bells & whistles of the other pianos. Just a few nice piano sounds either the very nice keybed 😊

Thank you for the review Seems to me that the FP-E50 has a lot of similarities to the RD-88 but with some upgrades I like the "Zen Core" feature and some improvements on the build and look of the instrument I hope that this has an improved PHA-4 action, however because of my own experience with the RD-88 I've owned for almost 3 years I still wish that Roland and some other companies would install 5 pin midi in and out connections on their new keyboards, Yamaha still has them on their new keyboards. I also hope that these standard, (in my opinion) connections aren't going away This is a tough comparison (FP-60 and FP-E50) but Stu did a great job of comparing the two I always appreciate Stu's piano playing and sharing his knowledge with us👏 Cheers Dave

Thank you for tuning in! We appreciate it. :) The FP-E50 is an impressive machine to say the least and there is definitely a bit of overlap with the RD-88. I don't believe there were any changes or updates to the PHA-4 action, but, naturally, the enclosure and design the action is featured in will have a slight affect on its overall feel. In terms of 5-PIN MIDI connectors, the trend seems to be removing them in favour of USB ports and Bluetooth MIDI. Thanks again and happy playing!

Quite an in-depth comparison. Excellent! You wouldn't think a couple of watts, and speaker direction would make such a big difference. Odd thing, there appears to be a difference when using the line outs. You'd figure that would be the same, but I can hear the difference. The FP-60X is much clearer, and has a richer tone. As much as I prefer the FP-60X, the bang for the buck of the FP-E50 is still on my list. Before I pull the trigger, NAMM is a month away, I want to see if there is any competition to the FP-E50. Most digital pianos have touch sensitivity adjustments. It is important to note that this does not change the physical weight of the keys though. It adjusts the sonic response, which tricks your brain into feeling like your are playing a piano with a heavier or lighter action.

One question, Stu spoke of the more solid keybed of the fp60x vs the fp e50. Ive heard some people say that the e50 is a bit sluggish on the key return compared to some other keybeds. That if playing a fast tune it can be more fatiguing because of this. Would this be because the e50 has a less rigid keybed than the fp60x ? Just wondered if Stu had felt this when playing the e50? Have to say that the tone of the piano on the fp60x sounds better to my ear over my tv, than the e50. There is a more metalic sound to the notes on the e50 that im not overly keen on.
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Hi! Brent here! While both of these pianos use the PHA4 action, there are other factors that can influence the touch in nuanced ways. The enclosure and design of the instrument will play a part. I wouldn't say that the FP-E50 has a sluggish key return, but it does have a slightly different feel. The best bet is to test out both options in person to see which touch you connect with most. :)

Thanks for another excellent review. I'm much more a pianist than keyboardist, so I favour the FP-60X. As I've said many times, Yamaha should be making its own "P" piano with a spec closer to the FP-60X. The FP-e50 has more onboard controls (always nice IMO) and the greater flexibility in recording and making backing tracks is attractive even to me - at least for home practice purposes. Stu briefly mentioned the graded actions, but it would be nice to know (on all digital pianos) how finely progressive the grading is. Is it just 3 zones in the case of the PHA4? Regarding microphones, the importance of these is often overlooked, and I'm guessing that for straight-forward singing, both of these models offer the same capability. Even pianists who never sing, may need to supply a mic for somebody who does, and they themselves might need to make announcements at gigs. Not using a separate mixer can save vital time if you're under pressure to set up quickly, say in venues which only open minutes before the public enters. A switch for effects cancel would be good for swapping between speech and song. I suspect that a separate mixer (for a mic) would still be required in many situations, particularly if the hi/mid/low is hard to adjust separately from the piano patch being played.
@Instrumental-Covers Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. Regarding progressive actions: I think the Kawai MP11SE has 5 or 6 zones (at least that's what I have read in online piano forums). However, the only digital piano manufacturer that I have seen specifically talking about linear grading is Yamaha, and that's on the CLP-775 and CLP-785. They even have a separate section addressing it, and this is what they say: 88-key Linear Graded Hammers-the first digital piano keyboard ever to feature realistic weighting on every key Every single key on a grand piano keyboard is weighted differently. This is because the strings for each note are slightly thinner and shorter in the treble register, becoming thicker and longer towards the bass register. The 88-key Linear Graded Hammers of the Clavinova is the first-of-its-kind to faithfully duplicate this graded touch with differing weights and key return on each one of its keys. This results in a feel and response that is astonishingly like that of a grand piano, and allows players to gain an appreciation of a more authentic touch. I am not sure how important that is, but they seem to care about that detail. Going back to the gigging piano experience: what is your opinion of the new Yamaha CK88? It is 14 lbs (6 Kg) lighter than the FP60X, it is battery operated, it has piano presets designed for gigs, onboard equalizer, microphone input (via A/D input jack), screen, and built-in speakers. I know you prefer the GH3 action over the GHS action because you can play faster... not sure if that would be a deal-breaker for you. What is your opinion on the speed of the PHA-4 action? I find it to be kind of sluggish. I played the Casio PX-S5000 yesterday directly against the Yamaha P515, and I noticed the PX-S5000 keys bounce twice after being released while the NWX action on the P515 does not bounce at all... I guess that hesitation would slow down the action? Not sure. I would like to hear your opinion. One more question: how important are the built-in speakers for you? I used to play in a church with a pair of 15" as main speakers for the audience, but I used a pair of 10" stage monitors for me. The digital pianos and/or arrangers did not have enough power from their built-in speakers for a live situation like that. Not hearing yourself clearly is pretty bad. The 15" speakers volume, coupled with the fact there were no walls around me (so the sound escaped from the built-in speakers escaped in all directions), forced me to use dedicated powerful stage monitors, so I could hear myself playing.

Thank you for taking the time to tune in and write in with your thoughts Mike! I think you bring up a good point regarding graded actions. Perhaps, this is a topic that merits an entire video review? ;) Also, you make some very excellent points about microphones. The convenience of being able to plug a microphone into your portable digital piano will be an invaluable feature for those that are performing and looking to streamline the gear they have to bring to and from a gig. I was actually quite impressed with the FP series instruments' microphone capabilities. The fidelity and customization is quite impressive and would be more than suitable for most small venues. :)

@@Instrumental-Covers good to hear from you. I haven't tried the new Yamaha CK pianos, though I've seen a couple of reviews and have checked the specs with my main supplier. They look like a great idea for some players, particularly those who want a cross between a stage piano and an arranger keyboard. It's interesting that the smaller one has 61 keys and not 73. That's cool. As you probably know, I often campaign for more choice in lengths of digital pianos. I was sad that the 61 key model didn't get a weighted action, not even GHS, but maybe there aren't enough players who need that on a 61 key instrument of this type. As for GHS on the CK-88, you know I would think several times before buying an instrument with GHS, but its implementation on the P-125 seems improved over the version on the P-45. I tested them side by side. So, GHS may be getting better every time. I half regret not buying a P-121 as a travel piano. I'm playing more vintage jazz repertoire now, and getting progressively further from needing complex keyboards, so I don't think the CK range is for me. Nowadays, I mainly need a good action and a piano tone I can use and tweak quickly on stage. I'm still finding the P-255 very useful, so until I find something much better... For me, built in speakers are useful, but in some stage situations they are more a hindance than a help. I like having them while practising, particularly in combination with studio monitors, partly because they make the keys vibrate a little, which also happens on an acoustic piano. They also saved me at one particular intimate gig when I forgot the main speakers. The CK pianos have some modest speakers, which is in keeping with the arranger aspect. They would drowned out in a band setting (even as monitors) but might be good for practising and arranging and for ad hoc situations. Optional power by batteries is a nice extra, and more speaker amplification would deplete those batteries too quickly I imagine.

@@Zoco101 I think there is a point after which the improvements are only marginal at best when it comes to a good piano sound and action in a portable instrument. I found yesterday an old Yamaha Clavinova CLP-115 for only $600, which was released in 2003... it sounded way better than most 2023 digital pianos that I play from other brands, even though it is 20 years old. As a new adult piano student - I've been watching videos endlessly for a couple of weeks trying to decide which digital piano/keyboard fits my needs best. I took the plunge on the FP-E50 which arrives within a week. Your videos have been extremely helpful and the most informative (for the details that swayed my decision) of the reviewers of digital pianos. Although every pianist sounds biased toward brands - I felt like your reviews are mostly unbiased. I wanted something I could move from room to room by myself and that I would not outgrow in the next 10 years as I learn. With the weight restrictions, I feel like this keyboard is enough piano not to hinder my learning and enough stage to keep it fun when I get stuck on something for a few days. The calibre of the PHA4 action, the combination of the SuperNATURAL and ZEN-Core engines, as well as the incredibly sophisticated accompaniment/arranger functionality make the FP-E50 one of the best value propositions on the market right now in my personal opinion. Also, I think there is some confusion here. The FP-E50's USB port transmits MIDI. It can also transmit MIDI wireless via Bluetooth.
