I took an audio sample of this recording, and applied a low-pass filter at 3,000 Hz with 48 dB attenuation, then a high pass filter with the same parameters, and listened to both samples separately. It is interesting to hear how a piano is essentially made of two types of sound: one coming from the wood and one coming from the metal, and they mix up in the air. If you have ever seen a piano without a soundboard and played it, you know it sounds extremely quiet and metallic... the same effect can be digitally replicated using a high-pass filter. A soundboard is like a large wooden table top inside the piano. But unlike a regular table, the wood is very thin and resonant. So, you marry the two in a piano: the wood makes a warm sound, and the metallic sound of the strings create the brilliance/brassiness of the sound. Another fun test is to record the highest note on a piano and separate the samples: you will be able to hear the wood mechanism making noise with no sound if you isolate frequencies below 200 Hz or so. There are many tests that can be done to isolate specific sounds of the piano using several low pass/high pass/pass bands filters. This becomes useful when designing speaker systems for digital pianos.

00:00 Intro 00:58 Playing 01:32 Schimmel C189 06:36 Playing 08:22 Impressions 13:15 Bass 16:19 Mid/Tenor 17:51 Treble 18:58 Action 22:30 Like & share :) Hi Stu, you give us a refreshing New Years breeze :) 4:24 Good instinctive correction to "close" the shot without cutting of the upright in the background, striaving for symmetry, nice and usefull OCD :) Victory loves preparation, preparation grows on practice. In the future, when preparing for commercial ads shots, you may plan with millisecond precision. Collect a range of shots, connect them with smooth transitions, plan in time (speed of transitions and length of shots), practice, then execute to achieve mastery. You can do it in the rhythm of the music ;) A perfect training ground. Some time ago I was grumbling about the lack of a high-fidelity FLAC version of this show. Now I found a good excuse to make it... So let's picture a wannabe piano player, that loves to imagine playing this Schimmel C189. Closes eyes and sinks into the sound... of binaural-> headphone mix captured from the position of the player, with all squeaks and shimmer of action and pedals. It may not look good on camera with all those microphones around, hence the "podcast version" of the "sound demo". Making experimental binaural mixes - it's playing in a niche. But I have an impression that the use of headphones grows faster than the use of proper Hi-Fi systems ;-) After all, only playing LIVE really counts.

You make this Schimmel shine again. Great playing on an obviously great instrument. Thanks for sharing this with us!

It's slightly offtopic but I think the science fiction like Schimmel Pegasus is still the most beautiful grand piano there is. They're rare cos Schimmel only makes two per year. But man they're georgeous.

They are quite stunning! Sometimes, abstract piano designs can get a little too weird, which can disrupt their aesthetic quality in my opinion. But, I must say that I agree with you about the Pegasus. It is a very eye-catching and attractive instrument. :)

Very interesting piano. Thanks again for the excellent review. I'd love to see a direct comparison with the Hoffmann P188 (or perhaps one between the smaller brothers, Schimmel C169 vs Hoffmann P162), like the SK-3 vs L190 video which was tremendously useful.

Wow! I love the tone and sound color of this piano! It has a soul and warmth, unlike many other new pianos, regardless of brand. Many times I hear that sterile, soulless tone that won’t catch me. It's something else.

There is a 2003 Schimmel SP 189 for sale. What does the SP stand for?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! I'm not entirely sure to be honest. Sometimes these letter codes are used for fairly generic names (GP = Grand Piano, UP = Upright Piano, etc.). To that point, it is possible that this code simply stands for "Schimmel Piano." However, I am really not sure.

Hello sir, I wish you a and your team a very Happy New Year. Great review piano sounds really fantastic very powerful and a musical tone. I hope you are aware with Studio-Logic Numa-X-GT. I have checked many videos of Numa-X-GT and it look very interesting and super duper value for money product. There’s no proper in-depth review like how you doing, I have a request to you see if you can make the video of Numa-X-GT. It would be a very helpful to me as I am seriously interested in buying. Thank you so much. Lots of love to you and your team for 2022 you all have a super duper 2022. 🙏

They don't sell that product, so the chances of them "reviewing" it are scarce to say the least. And even if they did, it wouldn't be an independent unbiased review since there's economic interest in selling the product. Check out PianoManChuck if you want an unbiased review (albeit not with Stu's amazing jazz playing).

With regards to Asian investors, has Parson's actually bought Baldwin yet? They manufacture Baldwin grands with their own newly devised scales and innovations without interference from anyone state-side, because it turns out that there is no such thing as a Baldwin division at Gibson Guitars, Baldwin's parent company. In fact, there is 'no' single individual, not one, working at Gibson that is involved or assigned to the administration of the Baldwin brand. It seems that Parson's is testing the market to see if their is any life left in the name, before they make an offer, and that Gibson, already being committed to the sale, is keen to let them have their way to explore a future they are prepared to invest in.

While I am well-versed in Baldwin's history, I have not kept very up-to-date with the brand's happenings post the Gibson-era manufacturing move to China (2008 if I recall correctly). Your postulations may be true, but I suppose only time will tell. It all comes down to the calibre and value of the instruments in my opinion. A great piano will get people excited. The fact that the Baldwin name has a longstanding history of excellence and reliability should make the sell even easier if the instruments perform well musically. :)

@@MerriamPianos A partner, whose name I will omit, at North American Music, Baldwin's US importer, is the closest thing to a 'Baldwin employee' there is, and he doesn't work for either Baldwin or Gibson! He's a partner in North American Music. Nevertheless, that's who Gibson directs you to if you want information on Baldwin. He has also confided to me that 'they' (Baldwin...North American...?) have had...disagreements with Parsons about some of the major changes they have made to the instruments, but Parsons just ignores them. This dragon, it seems, no longer has an American head to speak of.

I don't like the "brassy" bass. A piano of this size can have a fuller/rounder bass. The middle and upper are very nice but not not my cup o' tea. If I liked Yamahas, I would short list this piano and get some time on it.

I once played c189 right next to a C3x, schimmel is no doubt a better one to me, the tone and clarity is at a different level while at the same price range.
