Good video, just some slight corrections: Kibbe actually recommends that Soft Naturals wear delicate jewelry and shoes and avoid chunky accessories. Chunky, heavy jewelry is more Flamboyant Natural. Also, for Soft Natural the waist should always be slightly defined (although not cinched) and wide shapeless silhouettes should be avoided. Some people are saying they must not be SN because big, baggy clothing doesn't suit them but actually it's not supposed to.
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean. Kibbe says in his book that Soft Natural jewelry is intricate of course, and that they should avoid severe jewelry or 'heavy chunky pieces', but I also see that he says to avoid small jewelry (which I see as more delicate). Remember, smaller intricate jewelry would be Romantic. So I took this to mean that the jewelry should be larger, but also slightly intricate (usually larger means chunkier if you google 'chunky jewelry' that's what you'd get). If SN doesn't wear 'chunky' jewelry, then it'll look too small relative to their larger bones. And yes, I agree that the waist should be loosely defined--sorry if that wasn't clear in the video! It is still only one element of the overall style.
@HumanimalChannel4 жыл бұрын

Even though now David Kibbe has assigned Selina Gomez as Theatrical Romantic, I still agree that she looks stunning in Soft Natural attire. I am starting to think that he is just making up new rules because he doesn’t like how people are starting to learn for themselves and apply his methods at a higher level than he himself does. It should be a compliment to him that he started a revolution like this.

Paraphrasing here but "No makeup-makeup and actual no makeup fits every type" is so true - thank you! It's like you mentioned way back that if you only think skin tight clothing look good on you it's probably because you haven't found your type yet because skin tight doesn't mess with the lines, same with makeup! I've noticed that if I only wear my SD lines, even if they might seem really out there and like they would need (heavy) makeup to compliment the look that is not the case because my face by itself already matches the lines. Of course the right colours help with looking good too without makeup.

There is no way Selena Gomez is TR, I don't care what Kibbe says :) He is known to be biased in favor of TRs: he thinks that TR is the most beautiful type, and Selena's sweet face is easy to take one look at and want to put her in that category. But your analysis was so thorough and really proved with several examples how clothing BEHAVES on Selena, which is the ultimate proof of a person's body type! Relaxed lines look sublime on Selena; her makeup looks fussy and strange when it's sparkly; her hair with a beach body wave is gorgeous; her posture in the relaxed Natural way really suits her entire essence and personality; etc.

Kibbe did say recently (I know this video's older, and before this, a lot of people thought Selena was a sn back then) that Selena Gomez is actually a theatrical romantic, which to me, makes more sense. Sure, some of these outfits that would work for SNs work for her here, but I think they can also work for TRs too, because I think some SN and TR looks overlap, if that makes sense. She's very petite to me, and I don't just mean that she looks short, but that she has narrow shoulders imo. Plus she has double curve, which I don't think soft naturals have.

Despite being a SN I dress rather like how people would expect Classic's to dress but I still noticed that I followed SN rules without knowing them. I always get compliments with my outfits though. I think too many people get caught up with example photos for their type's styles. A lot of example photos showcase other people's PERSONAL TASTE, as long as you understand the underlying rules, you can wear basically any style, just tweak it to fit your body type.

In the Color Me Beautiful system years ago, the Natural type was different. Still relaxed and unconstructed, but not so much delicate, flowy fabrics or elaborate draping. The type featured textured knits and fabrics, nothing too tight or constricting, nothing uptight-looking, too smooth, or too shiny. Natural materials, like cotton or wool. Not a lot of jewelry. Imo, telling soft naturals to wear those huge oversized sweaters isn't the best idea, since curvy types need to show a waist or they look fatter than than they are. I look enormous if I don't have a waist in my clothes. Also those clothes that always look they're going to fall off are for young girls who look they're being edgy, or experimenting with their style. On a middle aged woman, it could easily look a little nutjobby, like somebody escaped a rubber room or forgot their meds. The CMB Natural type was more grownup casual, not boho at all (that was the Arty type). That's what most of the looks in this video remind me of - the Arty type.

I agree with all of this besides the makeup portion. Dewy vs. matte I don't believe is the issue, SN can of course look just as amazing in dewy makeup as they could in matte, it's the application that matters. In fact, I'd go as far as saying SN look better in a dewy glowy makeup than matte, as I see the matte looking a bit harsh if close attention is not given, and the glowy is very fresh, as Kibbe says a SN should be. You also mention that watercolor blending isn't a good choice for SN yet Kibbe directly says otherwise.
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for mentioning this. It can be a source of confusion for people in the future. I just looked over the recommendations again, and I definitely see what you mean. Here's my interpretation of what's going on between my examples vs Kibbe's recommendations/putting it all together: I'm not sure what 'fresh faced' really means, and it could mean something different now than it did in the 70's (maybe now, it means dewey, but in the 70's it meant powdered, who knows). But, I see that he says watercolor blending is good (but then again, it's hard to say if watercolor blending = overly blending, because I do agree there has to be some blending, otherwise it does look too severe). I show examples where overblending is clearly not good in my opinion. What do you think of the examples of Selena with dewey make up, and with the overly blended green make up that I show? I think they do not look good at all!!
@latifx39442 жыл бұрын
I've found for myself a satin foundation is perfect on me. Not too dewy, but not overly matte. Really powdered looks on me make me look a little sick while dewy makes me look too round in the face.
@justinemarin162 жыл бұрын
I agree especially because "glowy" skin tends to be associated with natural makeup. There's a difference between shiny/glowy and shimmery/sparkling. The latter involves some type of glitters which I can imagine would work against a SN. And this might be why that Met gala makeup look on Selena was not flattering.
@katli8882 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I personally look better with glowy skin, when my face looks matte it looks tight, restricted and actually makes me look older, I think. I also work really hard to hydrate my skin as it’s naturally really dry sooo ima stick with my glowy natural face lol

Hmm.. I know the baggy sweater is recommended for us, but I beg to differ. For those of us with significant curves, the chest and hips pushing the sweater out takes away our small waistline if not belted/tucked.
@merriamstyle3 жыл бұрын
go for baggy cardigans then! and with a tight top underneath so you can still see your small waist. also remember to make sure that the cardigan is long, not cropped. same for sweaters. oftentimes beveled types (naturals) think that they aren't naturals because they say they look weird in oversized things, but it's not that, it's that they look weird in short oversized things, which will just look poofy and awful on them!! so long lines are also key.

The easiest lazy way to had texture is to spray salt spray over your hair then sleep in a braid. Unbraid your hair a voila, easy chaos. If you don't like sleeping in a braid, salt spray after washing your hair whilst it's still damp, then scrunching it whilst you dry it/letting it air dry will also add some texture. I make my own salt spray using about 500ml water, 5 table spoons of salt, and a teaspoon of cheap hair gel. When mixing make sure the water is warm, and then shake up before every use. Salt spray can also be bought ready made but it's cheaper to DIY it.

Also, as a note, I feel like the more yin-fleshiness a soft natural has, the more romantic elements they need to pull. For example, though they're both soft naturals, Selena Gomez and Hilary Duff don't look good in *exactly* the same lines. Hilary needs more tight fitting pants with tapering at the ankle, waist and wrist definition, etc. The cut cannot be *as* relaxed. SN flesh is very yin, and the more flesh they have, the more they need to compensate with romantic lines as to not look wide.

Thank you for this! I have been going back and forth over my body type for days but I think this is it! Both times I took the test I got Romantic, and that just didn't seem right at ALL. But after watching this video, you've just listed almost everything that I feel "my best" in, right down to the makeup and hair, so I think this confirms it. I just discovered your channel recently and it has been so helpful. :D

YAYYY!! 😄 This feels like Christmas! Thank you SO much, Merriam! 💖 Loved the video! Specially the fact that you recommened "bold but a bit blended" eye makeup. Whenever I read recommendations for Naturals: they all tell you to go for a literal 'natural' look. I mean, what's the point of makeup with just that look!? I'll get the look book soon as well! Thank you!.😊

Hi! I just downloaded your Soft Natural Look Book and I have some questions. One of the things that made me believe I was Soft Natural is my broad shoulders (to hip ratio), however, many of the neck lines you show emphasize broad shoulders (crewnecks, boatnecks, droopy shoulders, etc). Also, skinny jeans are supposed to emphasize broad shoulders. Am I confused about my body type? I also have 1 complaint. The spaghetti straps are completely unwearable for a) anyone who has ever had children, and b) anyone over 40 (the boobs start to sag and you NEED a bra). Do you know of anyone that does kibbe for over 40s?

I'm not sure yet if I am soft classic or soft natural, but definitely a soft something. Some elements (loose, feminine) are part of both styles, so it's ok for now. Anyway, I always struggled with corporate outfits, I think regular Blazers look just terrible on me, so severe and strict and really not meant to work with my body. But everybody seems to wear Blazers, it is recommended as a staple in every essentials video and I just couldn't qear them, but I want to! Sometimes you just need serious outfit, and Blazers are perfect to convey that. But I really understand and put it in words now, WHY it didn't work. Thank you so much!!!

Perfect! Lots of images, nice exemples.. just awesome! Can you do the pure Narural like this one? I'm a small natural 5'3 and i get very confused because sometimes the lines recomended for naturals look a little "weird" on me and i don't see many exemples of a small natural to look for inspiration. Looove your videos!! You made me so relief to realise that i am actually a muted deep winter, i used to getso lost in all that bright colors. Thank You! 🙏🏻 Keep going with this lovely work! Showing this to all my friends here in Brazil! 👍🏻

Have you ruled out being a soft gamine?
@PUNKingenue6 жыл бұрын
@@lissacroft919 Yeah, I'm quite large in bones, all my answers in the test were B except hands and feet. Actually I am ingenue more on the childlike side, I look a lot younger than I am. But i definely don't have the soft gamine doll face nor the yin bone structure. I think I am just an pocket sized natural. ☺
@cutienerdgirl5 жыл бұрын
@@PUNKingenue Sounds like you're a flamboyant gamine. You don't have a yin bone structure, but look childlike (maybe like a 12 yr-old, not a bad thing).

Love the videos. I will say that the clothing that is tight on the red carpet is a poor example to compare with a showing outfit on a side walk. I would love to see red carpet looks side by side and casual looks side by side since naturals are already I feel limited in glam

You did a great job describing this type! Many of your style comments I had already discovered on my own. Your example images were great. Well done and thank you!

Okay this makes much better sense. I thought I was a soft classic but soft natural fits me much better. Honestly it's really hard to figure out your type just by taking the quiz and seeing which letters are most frequent. I had to read the descriptions for all of them. And then look at the clothing options and then consider which things I KNOW are ridiculously unflattering on me. Case in point... blazers. They make me look like I have an inverted triangle shape because I barely have an hourglass. Which I am kind of in denial about which is probably what was skewing my results. (I'd like to think it's more defined than it is) that and I'm not exact at my thinnest right now. Idk why I blabbing on and on. Is this relatable?? 😅😂 point this video series is helpful 😊 Thank you!

I’m here in 2020 getting an education. Thanks a lot, some of these things I’ve already noticed when I’m getting dressed but this really helped me hone in those key things. My whole life I want to be a romantic but I’m going try to a be more ‘elegant’ soft natural. Thanks a lot
