I had the opportunity to study with Mark when I was going through chemotherapy. It kept my spirits high. He is a wonderful Kumu. He has studied all his life and his dancers make their own adornments and the tea leaf raincoats are made by the dancers. Oakland is very fortunate to have AHA and a rich mix of cultures from everywhere. Mark has spent time with the oldest wax recordings of chanters and so his style isn't "unHawaiian", but old old Hawaiian.

The chant is absolutely riveting. Kumu Mark's voice is so powerful, and his breath control-wow. The chants are as powerful as the dancers, and the dancers are pretty damn powerful. This is one of the best hulas I've seen. This is pure narrative, and I appreciate that even though I don't understand Hawaiian, I can get it all from the performance and the song.

Oh lord, the voice styling and singing of Kumu Mark is damn INTOXICATING. His passion, as well as the talents of his dancers, are simply gorgeous. It's moments like these that make me proud to be Hawaiian. Lucky we live Hawaii!

people who take big risks like mark keali'iho'omalu will always be harsh scrutiny. i personally like his voice and his boldness to step outside of the box when it comes oli and hula.

It is surmised in Pre-Contact time, Hawaiian warriors who paddled the war canoes; their warfare weapon was their paddle itself. It was a combination warclub and warAxe. It was carved by adz out of extremely hard wood. The rear half of the paddlers would stay at the canoe to guard it and remount it upon going back to sea as the initial paddling engine, the forward half would dismount upon hitting shore, leaping from the canoe to engage the welcoming opponent as the 1st wave crash shock troops. These men were considered the "g.i.'s", though they were in fact a class of Ali'i. The elite warriors, a group of special high Ali'i, were the great champion warriors of the King, staged on deck and rushed off the twin hull canoe in combat attack group formation with various types of handheld weapon, right behind the shock troops, as the main body of soldiers to carry the battle to conclusion.

I still love this mele. I still find myself cracking up at the end with the guy who is huffing and puffing so bad. He looks like he is thinking, "Holy shit I'm tired!!" At least he is still on his feet. If I did this routine they would have to drag my unconscious self off the stage halfway through!!! LOL!!!
