Oakland California? Its great to see Hawaiian culture being embraced by the rest of the world. I wish we had a school in New York City... For a while "Radio Hula" on Mercer Street near NYU advertised classes but they've long since closed. I wonder how many other competitors are visiting from outside HI? Aloha Big Island, WE LOVE YOU!!!

Yeah, always enjoy their performance, I think they are not going to Merrie Monarch this year coz they are going on tour to Japan this spring, I've been wanting to join his Halau.

@heyitskainoa i know this is a year late response, but i understand your position against na kumu hula like Hoomalu in regarding traditional hula. however, do you believe that the kaholo, lele, uehe, ami, and other steps were all created in one hula lesson? were the pahu, pu'ili, kala'au, ili'ili, ipu, and other instruments made in the first hula dance? our native hawaiian ancestors were all about progess. e kulia i ka nu'u.

Its going down in the bay on October 2nd, the men of kahulahou are battling center stage with 4 other halau! an all kane competition! i cant wait! you should check it out at the kahulahou website. dont forget to check out the forum to sees whos talking smack!

actually before King Kalakaua women could not dance the hula but, Kalakaua was fasintated that he asked of the woman to dance and thats when he made it so that woman could dance and this festival is honoring that decision he made

@heyitskainoa as for imitating chickens, then natasha oda- miss aloha hula of 2001- should not have gained her title according to you because she imitated the mo'o in her hula kahiko. and if you are against kapu and tradition so much, tell that to Ka Mo'i Wahine 'o Ka'ahumanu for breaking kapu system and not being punished by the gods. Take away your comfortable home, convenient transportation, and grocery shopping and live like our ancestors to keep tradition.

It was forbidden for wahines to dance hula..Hula was only allowed for kanes to dance, and as for your "text" to look things up...it's called HISTORY! Did'nt they teach you that in school??

Looks like theres a Hula war" going on here, guys...Makes me think, maybe we should have left it all to the men and never had our women dance...it's not supposed to be an argument between two or more people..Hula was NEVER supposed to be for show, or being "invited" to the Merrie Monarch...It was actually FORBIDDEN to dance back in the days..and from what I see between you two..Maybe it should have stayed sacred...

funny guy.... anyway I was implying that you might assist & short cut me thru the channels to a credible Hawaiian authority so I didn't have to deal with an anthropologists opinion or the like, coz, as u know, HISTORY isn't always entirely accurate. now get ova yrself samuel & please direct?? (asking not to appease mere curiosity but with genuine appreciation for traditional arts)
