Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, Thank you Ryuichi Sakamoto, God bless you.

Lose yourself in this film. This is a film full of atmosphere - wonderful cinematography, beautiful locations, a stunning soundtrack and some fantastic performances. Don't look at this film and think this is a war film, it isn't, this is film about East meets West, Clashes of tradition, culture and beliefs. However the best thing about this film is that the more you watch it the better it gets. If such a thing as mood music exists then this is mood film - switch the lights off, turn the sound up and be absorbed.

Wow, I can't really explain how I feel right now with words. In just 6 minutes this edit made my eyes watery, truly the power of music. Your edit is absolutely amazing, with perfect story telling. Since it deals with the disturbing concept of war, it's hard to find beauty, but this edit....along with the music...made me feel how precious life and human souls are:(( Thank you very much for this beautiful edit 😭 it's incredible

Quite frankly I don’t think there’s many films that have as strange an effect on me. It’s such a unique beast in its depiction of prison camp life. There’s no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and it’s best summed up by one of Tom Conti’s lines, stating that no one is right and everyone is wrong. The music by Ryuichi Sakomoto is tremendous as is his performance. David Bowie is tremendous as the defiant Sgt. Celliers, Tom Conti is a wonderfully steadfast presence as the titular Mr Lawrence, and you all know the great Takeshi Kitano, well here he’s a prison guard who initially is shown to be a violent mindless grunt but shows so many different layers. What a film. Quality edited. You are amazing.

His film, like John Wayne's, is neither realistic nor ambiguous, but it is a fascinating essay that finds revolutionary discourse in masculinity subversion.

This has always been one of my favorite movies. Visually stunning, fantastic soundtrack, outstanding performances all around. I've always been a HUGE fan of David Bowie and with this movie he proves that I've always been right. Tom Conti is also fantastic, as always and I can honestly say there is not one weak performance in this movie.

As far as films go, David Bowie really has made some utter pish. However, this is by far his best performance as Major Selliers. Playing alongside Tom Conti as Lawrence, his defiance in the face of the Japanese oppressors in a prisoner of war camp. Well directed and written, and brilliantly acted, the torment of Selliers comes through excellently, and we eventually find out why he is as he is. Interestingly, much of this was filmed in New Zealand, the scene of a wartime tragedy in which dozens of Japanese were killed in a prisoner of war camp in Featherston. Given that this incident still runs deep in modern day New Zealand, this was a daring choice to say the least.

That kind of movie is just not my cup of tea, but it was done skillfully, Bowie is fantastic, and so are all the other actors. That Sakamoto score is something else, too. Normally, I would not watch that kind of movie twice (war movie, bloody guts, unhappy ending), but . . . I re-watch this one because . . . Bowie. BTW, I bought a copy in Japan. (-: Not a great idea for me! My Japanese isn't really good enough, but it really makes you think about the complexities of doing a film in two languages like this.

This would have to be one of the finest war films made dealing with the human soul. Also the only one iv'e come across dealing with homosexuality. Production made mainly by japanese makes me wonder that they really do understand what happened during the war and their brutality. The casting, photography, directing makes it a masterpiece that puts all modern war films to shame.
