For reference, Meryl's character is a very understated but proud woman. She has spent her life struggling to be good in spite of never receiving the reciprocation/love she deserves from her son (or really her husband). This moment is not just about sex, but really about spiritual awakening. This is the moment where she first experiences true enlightenment and pleasure. Her character is seen again later in the play as a very sensual and metropolitan figure that appears to be so much happier than she was prior to this moment.
