That people think that's an apt comparison shows how little the general public knows about opera. Maybe acting, too. Meryl Streep is a successful actress with many excellent performances to her credit, but talk of her versatility is oversold, and she's often just decent with a reputation that no longer gets scrutinized. Diana Damrau, though, represents the ultimate zenith of what the human voice can achieve. She is not just several but many steps above Meryl Streep in comparison of the achievements of the two in their respective arts.

Perhaps, but very few if any people who laughed at her in her lifetime are long gone and will never be remembered as she still is. So in a way, I think Florence got the last laugh.
@TheLordSheogorath6 жыл бұрын
Many more people admire her for her courage I think. Like Tommy Wiseau- he wanted to make a movie by hiw own terms and he did it, and now he is a legend. :)

Yes, I laugh, but at the same time she is SUCH an inspiration!

It's because she is an actress and that's a clip from a show. She purposely did that.

If I could just give her a hug, I would! She did it, and at least she did! she didn't let their laughter stop her from doing what she loves the most, and that's why I'm very proud of her!

What a wonderful actress...She nails it everytime❤❤❤

She actually sang it light years better than FFJ did. Regardless, it takes SO much skill to be a good singer (like you can tell Meryl is) and sing this badly. Beautifully done! :)

'Her performance at Carnegie Hall was on October 25, 1944. Guess who performed the day before? Frank Sinatra. A tough act to follow, even if you can sing... at all... I seriously would like to hear an autotuned version of this.
@panda23095 жыл бұрын
This is historically wrong, the audience was enthusiastic. They understood that Florence Foster Jenkins had a great heart and wanted them to spend a pleasant moment in spite her vocal performance was bad. The performance in Carnegie Hall has not been recorded but photos show the audience.

I just watched two documentaries about Florence Foster Jenkins. Both state that members of the audience would clap, whistle, and cheer to cover up their laughter.

Funnily enough, Meryl Streep sings more in tune (as Florence) than Florence did!!

I have to say this is one of my favorite scenes ever. I laugh every time. Streep is hilarious and just brilliant. Love the piano, the audience, and Hugh Grant behind the curtain. Bravo to all!

Extraordinaria interpretación de Merryl Streep. Florence tambien extraordinaria pues cantó sin tener condiciones sólo su entusiasmo. La película es una joya

Streep deserved that standing ovation. She sang it live and gave a brilliant imitation of the true awfulness of FFJ.

Apparently, the syphilis that her first husband gave her affected her hearing so she honestly could not hear how badly she sang! Poor woman, life was not kind to her!
