You are right. You can tell that Meryl Streep can actually sing IN TUNE but deliberately made her intonation worst to imitate Florence. If you listen closely, many of her notes (except for the very high and very low) are actually in tune.

When she was young Meryl Streep studied voice with the legendary Estelle Liebling, who also taught Beverly Sills. In the midst of this brilliant awfulness you can hear a few notes showing how good Streep's voice is. And all the numbers in the film were done live - no lip-synching. Simon Kellberg's piano playing is also live.

That people think that's an apt comparison shows how little the general public knows about opera. Maybe acting, too. Meryl Streep is a successful actress with many excellent performances to her credit, but talk of her versatility is oversold, and she's often just decent with a reputation that no longer gets scrutinized. Diana Damrau, though, represents the ultimate zenith of what the human voice can achieve. She is not just several but many steps above Meryl Streep in comparison of the achievements of the two in their respective arts.

I've known about Florence Foster Jenkins since my classical concert pianist dad played her recordings for me when i was about 15. Simon Helberg was spot on in his portrayal of Jenkins' incredible pianist Cosmé McMoon. If you listen to the recordings, he never loses her no matter how off tempo she goes.

This is historically wrong, the audience was enthusiastic. They understood that Florence Foster Jenkins had a great heart and wanted them to spend a pleasant moment in spite her vocal performance was bad. The performance in Carnegie Hall has not been recorded but photos show the audience.
