It’s not really suppose to be taken seriously but it is suppose to be taken seriously. Harsh noise represents everything that isn’t suppose to work that then contrarily makes a satisfying experience. Good review I don’t think you get it but I respect the opinion.

@@Drivebyedesign you reek of the pretentious quackery that pad chennington was spewing when he dropped his pulse demon review, you apply this level of elitism to the music as if its "challenging contemporary music" when it isnt. merzbow has never been about challenging music that most people listen to and what flies on the radio, when thats never been a goal of his. aside from vomir, noise music isnt about that, its about the actual sonics of the music, its supposed to be high adrenaline abrasiveness, its about how the harshness and shrillness makes you feel.

@@vlvyyplipsclip7379Some people just like dissonant music. If I were to guess, it’s because it creates adrenaline and sometimes nostalgia for the sounds within the womb. Somewhere in this dissonance is a profoundly human, less immediate emotion than found in traditional music. It’s something generally people who listen to a lot of music already and seek something entirely different get into. It’s a very abrasive genre to find any enjoyment in. That being said, it REALLY can make people feel euphoric. Noise music on album generally does not translate well to modern speaker formats. On earbuds, it’s a nightmare. It’s something you need a specific liking and often even still a very high end sound system to get any enjoyment from. Japanese harsh noise is mostly popular with fans - outside of extremely niche circles - from 4chan’s /mu/ board, as a means of trolling Western audiences into thinking they just don’t “get it,” but if the audio quality is not there, and you haven’t had an interest in hearing it live, and you haven’t listened to a TON of tonal music or have masochistic tendencies, there REALLY isn’t anything to get. It’s just posturing, but keep it up. Merzbow keeps playing bigger and louder venues.

this album, despite being the second most important merzbow record in his discog and the most popular noise/HNW album in the modern era, is stupendously overrated. the only reason this album stands out in his discog is because BLUDHONEY managed to release a remastered version with a bonus track + vinyl pressing. this albums showcases some of the lowest effort out of any merzbow project that i have heard so far, suffering from a common merzbow problem of "sounding too much like being shot in the mouth with a firehose with no variation." merzbow has better projects of which are easier to get into, have more dynamics, have better and more textured sounds, and dont let songs blend too much together. venereology, tauromachine, amlux, spiral honey, and also his latest 2 albums. its a shame that in the modern era the face of noise is represented by such a low effort and lame album. despite most of the tracks being kinda of dogshit imo, the tracks ultra marine blues, extract 1 (bonus track), and tokyo times ten all stand out relatively passable. ultra marine blues has this slight tint of melody during the sections where the sounds shift up and down in frequency, extract 1 just in general has the most sonically interesting sound across the whole album (aside from the flickering pulses in woodpecker 1 and the huge percussive hit in tokyo times ten), and tokyo times ten have the aforementioned percussive strike paired with mostly uninteresting noise.

Bro my favorite squaretooth waves fed into a delay pedal with fuzz are CLEARLY better than your contact mic being smashed on the ground with a reverb pedal. You normie pedestrians just don’t get Japanese noise music.

Genuinely one of the worst albums of all time imo. The only value that I can see in it is that I'm sure it was cathartic to make.
