Until I started watching these comparison videos (starting with the mooer vs Ampero ones), I never quite appreciated just how much the cabinet in your signal chain affects the tone. Sure, the amp, distortion and guitar has an effect, but it seems to me that the cabinet/speaker the amp is playing through definitely seems to have the largest influence on the tone. Killer video as usual, Taylor! I've been using the IR you have shared on tracks I've been mixing and it has seriously improved my tone! Thanks for sharing, man!

The Axe FX III stock actually nails what a analog Mark IV sounds like. Mark IVs have a tone of mids in them. The Stomp actually sounded pretty good stock. It removed a lot of the junk mids. The Ampero boosted a lot of the 5k-8k range so the high end sounds like it is on fire. I am biased since I have an Axe Fx III but the stomp really impressed it.

This video confirms something I’ve known for a minute. 3rd party IR’s are the key. Even a tone obsessed company like FAS, who in my opinion as a customer, are a company that strive for the best possible quality, the IR’s are their weak link. Right now, Mikko is my jam! As far as the modeling, I am glad to say that the Line 6 and FAS sound the closest and most pleasing. This is comforting since I own an AF2 and Helix lol. I will say that something FAS gets that L6 hasn’t is the gain structure, on the helix is seems like their amp gain algorithm is clean, dirty and high gain, whereas with the Axe FX the gain varies much more model to model, there’s feeling in the gain, it’s hard to explain.
@thomasfoster40914 жыл бұрын
Dude, great video. Your IR was an improvement on each model. Made the Axe FX sound muuuch better. Surprisingly I thought the HX killed it. Ampero has too much going on in the highs, which was distracting from what else it was doing. The GE200 also surprised me.

I've had the GE200 for a couple of years (or more) now, and was very impressed that I could get it to sound like my real Mesa Boogie MKIII. I do run a BBE Sonic Stomp Sonic Maximizer pedal in front of it (I have a BBE 422 Sonic Maximizer in my rack). And that helps get it closer to my sound. Really looking at the Ampero as I've had some really good luck running a couple of the nano amps (Capitan Sunset) as power amps and my Amplituble Mesa Boogie patches through my Mesa Boogie guitar speakers. It's a kick ass 5 watts and I have two as I play in stereo. I caught the comment that you said that the Ampero does not have a 5-band EQ like on the Boogies, but in the manual they reference an EQ called "V EQ". It is described as "Based on the 5-band EQ module on Mesa/Boogie * amps". That makes it very appealing, to me. Great video, thank you.

I think the guitar only section towards the end shows that you need to pay more attention to levels when recording. The Helix, which had by far the lowest volume always being followed immediately by the Axe FX which had the highest, had me wondering whether differences I was hearing were due to tone or the fact that I could just hear the Axe FX more than the others. I could also hear differences in mixing, the double tracking and playing that was clouding my judgement too. You should do a section where we hear just a straight, single guitar passage being played without stereo double tracking or any other mixing except maybe just to match the volume for each clip, because that's what we will hear if we choose any of these modelers. IMO it would help to remove all the variables and let us hear the sound of the models.

Love this amp model. It would be interesting to compare a tone match of these on the Axe Fx. Just to check out the curve difference. It seems like the AxFx3 always has a mid bump compared to the others on these comparisons. It seems to help any of the contenders that have more mids. The HX Stomp usually does a little better than it did this time. This time it sounds pretty bad. (I'm an AxFx 2 user but have no brand loyalty. I also have some Line6 stuff, and been impressed with the others).

@scorpthe4 жыл бұрын
The problem with Mooer's Mark is the lack of preEQ. They make this amp so versatile. So it sounds like Mooer set all the knobs at 12 and matched this amp. The bass knob, as you know, at 12 makes sound more fuzzy. #lifehack The best way to get "that" tight Mark sound on GE200 is to put "tube drive" as the heater in DS section before Mark. Even if you're a Mooer 008 micro preamp owner you can put smth like "mooer pure boost" before it, so the treble and the bass on it will be your preEQ. Put treble all the way up, bass all the way down and so, here it is, dry tight Mark sound. Add here 5-band EQ with 1960 cab and you can get master of puppets album sound!

Can't wait to hear a blind shootout with the real amp! AxeFX always has a more articulate high-frequency character in these tests vs the Helix (almost makes it sound like it has a more spacious stereo field). While that may sound most pleasing to the ear, in most of the shootouts I've heard against the real amps, that character of the AxeFX is actually less accurate than the modelers that sound slightly more 'boxy' like the Helix. @@SusNoodle I don't think so. I own an Ampero and for my experience is just a matter of EQ. It seems the Ampero just has more treble in general than the others, you just have to turn it down a little bit. I assume Taylor uses one unit (I suppose the AXE) to dial a base tone and then dial the same EQ on the other units. This also can be a personal choice of "go to" sound, when I dial a tone in Helix Native (supposedly the same sound as the HX Stomp) I always get annoying frecuencies and never achieve a tone that I like, but I love almost every Taylor's HX Stomp tones. Great shoot-out. The Ampero is really horrible, I personally would get rid of that thing as quick as possible, I don't see any use for it, with or without the IR. The GE200 is very decent, I'd say it's even better than the HX. Again, the Axe FX3 has this little extra something that when put side by side like this with the others, sounds more authentic.

It's true.. and I can tell you from using the axefx, it behaves the most like a real amp when dialing it in. The Ampero got the short end of the stick in this one, check the description for those details

The Mooer and the HX sound the best imho /even better with the custom IRs)...the Fractal has a bit too much lowend...and the Hotone is plain shit

In general the Ampero always has a ton of high end it seems. Not a bad thing, you definitely need to take advantage of the EQ though, lol.
