A wonderfull thing that the IVs have is (I really dont know if Mesa intended to do that) that when you are controlling it with the external switching jacks (Im using a Joyo Pxl Pro with 4 triggers) you can entirely bypass the preamp and go straight to the power amp. That way you can use any preamp you want. Yes, imagine that rack of doom with that IV and that studio preamp. You gonna get a FIVE channel Mark 😎😎

After being away from guitar playing for six months due to mental health issues and in general going through the murkiest waters I've seen, I'm now starting to get back into it. And let me tell you Leon, your videos are for me like coming home. These videos remind me of everything that's awesome about playing guitar. I've been a subscriber since way back when you had less than 5k subs, and I'm blown away on how your channel has (quite deservingly!) exploded in size. Congrats on the success and thanks for the awesome content!

I've owned a Mark IVa and then Mark IVb years ago. Used them for Death Metal and never needed a boost, just a gate! The tone differences between them I chocked up to different tubes. I had to sell them for college money, and this video is giving me some serious GAS for one.

Love your videos and your chops, and especially your Mark IV jamming! It's a nice little confirmation that, yep, it's the best amp ever. I bought my first in '99, sold it in an exceptionally bad series of decision making, and this year bought another because it's the tone I always hear in my head and can't get with anything else.

Shoutouts on SRV. Still looking forward to that Mark V episode ;) The EQ at early gain stage is great. I'd rather take that and an EQ pedal in the loop than EQ at the end of the amp, just because it changes the character so interestingly in amps. That old Fender/Marshall vibe where you can use the eq as more distortion. With the proper guitar (and assuming the designer set the amp's basic tone right), just turn everything up to 10 and enjoy.

Would love to hear this amp a/I'd against your Soldano 50 and or maybe your ADA 1 tones. By the way it sounds no better than your FM3 if you ask me. Modellers have arrived. That green PRS with the JB sounded really good fo me thru that amp. All of the guitars did, but it seems to me that the Green PRS really translated well as did the LP with Martin Snith Pickups. Both of those sounded great to me especially sir. Hope you have fun with it. Be safe and hope you and family and friends are well my friend.

Oh yeah, waking up to some Boogie goodness! That amp is amazing, I want one. But you could have been playing thru the AX3 for all I know. The model is so super close that it's basically the sound of the channel, amp or model. Let it roll! 👍

@danyeo 4 жыл бұрын
Not when you’re in the room and playing the amp on a 4x12. I tried to get the FM3 to sound exactly like the amp through the return FX loop. Close, but the amp always sounded better.
@seventhsealhere
@seventhsealhere 4 жыл бұрын
@@danyeo Interesting. Would be a good video for LT. Did you have the power amp modeling turned off in the FM3 global settings during that test? Unfortunately I don’t have a Mark IV to try here. I did take that same approach with my original 5150 and FM3 PVH 6160 amp block and that was amazingly close. Well, either way, enjoy that Mark IV, what matters is what sounds good to you! I want one now - either that or a JP2C. Oh no...GAS!
@TijlCarrein
@TijlCarrein 4 жыл бұрын
Well, you can get close with the Axe FX or the Kemper sound and even 'feel' wise, but the moment you play live and the other guitarists has a decent tube amp, you get lost in the mix... not a matter of volume mind you, it's just 'lost frequencies' I would guess... Believe me, I've been on digital a journey for several years... It ended about 2 years ago when I finally bought the mesa quad to accompany my Mesa 2: 90. The 2:90 is a beast but I've used the Axe2 xl, the Kemper and a Helix LT, alas... Whenever my friend kicked in his trusty jcm900 (50 watt version) I would get lost... The best of all modelers for live use was the GSP 1101, but even then... The Mesa Quad just ate the Marshall for lunch... so aggressive and deep, piano like bottom end... Then, August 2019... I traded up for my holy grail: a Mark IVa.... Insanely good live!! I play in a 3 guitar band, the Mark IV just outclasses the jcm900 and the dual rectifier solo... It cured my GAS in a heartbeat! Best.Amp.Ever...

Yeahh!!! Finally entered the Mark family at last!! Welcome!! I have the Rev A, the differences are basic that A has 2 loops as the B has 1 in stereo and you also can footswitch the reverb (on the A you cant) The trick with them is to use the bright pull in the lead with low volumes and the harmonics with single coils/weaker pu's. I only use it with my Fender strat. Yes. Another great episode Leon!! 😎

Love the vids mate. Had one of these for 30years and a later version like yours. Try dropping the volumes down in the "mixer" and knocking up the main volume... changes the dynamic immensely. PLUS, if you can get a CFX4 from Axess Electronics you can midi it up perfectly... they went out out of business a few years ago with the owner now working for boogie, but FABULOUS kit. They occasionally pop up on eBay and week worth the money.

@@LeonTodd I'll say, I watched a guy with his week old Mark IV wheeling it on the road into a gig on top of his quad, saying he needs to buy a roadcase for it. When suddenly he hits a pothole, quad stops, head comes flying off hits ground on it's side. Screams of horror, tears, swearing like you'd never heard. Even the neighbours to the venue were sympathetic. Got it inside, box was looking sad & lopsided. A few tubes had fallen out, reseated them in hopefully the right order. Fired it up 🤞🤞, did that headline gig & a week supporting a major overseas act held together with 2 rolls of gaffer tape & hope till he got it serviced. Had a new repaired or replacement box. Along with the heaviest mofo roadcase you'd ever seen. Also I'd been pestering him to set it to Tweed power for the smaller venues they played at because he was killing people in the back row, & the sound guy was cutting him out of the FOH mix. Stubbornly he said he'd paid for all the power, he was gonna use it. After his accident he came of stage saying the amp had never sounded better. So started writing down settings, found he'd knocked the Tweed switch. 🤣🤣 yeah what does a lighting guy know? 🤣🤣 Still my Holy Grail amp I'd ever wanted. Perhaps I'll be able to afford the Mark 7 when it ever comes out. 🤘🤘

Hi Leon! I hope I'm not too late on this video, I want you to see this comment. About a year ago you did a "5 Minute Tones" video on John Sykes/Whitesnake 1987 album for the AxeFx. I was wondering if you could do another soon? I read a comment from Bob Rock about that tone. Sykes used TWO Mesa Mark IIIs in stereo (I'm sure any Mark series would work), with a slight delay on one of the amps to make it sound thicker. Would there be a way to replicate this in the AxeFx? Especially that slight delay/doubling/thickening effect that Bob Rock was talking about. It would be a cool video to do as well.

As a Mark IV owner I can only talk about the IV. I like that the Lead Channel has the lead gain, lead voicing, and pull fat. Offers a lot of options that the Mark V just doesn't have. I love the clean channel and also the R2 is really cool low gain/tweedy sounds. Also I noticed the IV has a radically different feel to the V that is a bit spongy *I used to own a Mark 5:35*. Nice acquisition! Like the other Mk series (I owned a Mk 3), it does still need the graphic. Shot Down in Flames sounded good. Do you have an SG? Have a good day :)

I swore I'd never sell my B but realised its limitations eventually. Great to have as one of your amps but not ideal as the only one.

@@LeonTodd I have two Laney IRT Studio rack mount amps, a Laney L5T 1 x 12 combo and a Laney L20T 2 X 12 combo. I sold the Mesa for £1000 which is what I paid for it so great at holding their value. I bought all 4 Laney amps over the following 2 years and had change too. Both the L5T and the L20T I had to repair which I did myself. I have an AXEFXIII which you have helped me immensely with. My Mark IV was a combo with the Black Shadow EV speaker. I wasn't gigging it which was the main reason for letting it go. It was too loud and I was trying multiple ways to reduce the volume, different power valves etc. I even tried 6V6'S. The preamp always sounded amazing but you get the real hair on the back of your neck feeling when you had the master around 4. Only ever experienced that a handful of times. Maybe a variac or isolation cab was the way to go. I do miss it. I didn't think I would ever part with it. Those amps have a character and a lovely smell too.

Leon your so handsome :3 Thanks for the video, I want Mesa! I would love one to pair with my Randal RH150g3+ and Ormsby sx7 in a stereo set up but I think I ought to be reasonable and get an AxeFX first.

I agree, only played an A once for about a half hour. Bought a B online because it was a great price and I was blown away. I’ve had it many years but Lamb of God Ashes of the Wake was a huge reason I wanted to have it.

I think that one was a Rev A. There's definitely a few differences between the way they sound, but then again - different day, different guitars, different mic combo. All adds up.

Hey Leon, congrats on the acquisition! If you're interested, I have a spare S-Gear 2 license for mac that I can send to you. I've tried all emulators / modelers but the wayfarer model in S-gear is thé best Mark IV emulator (imho). I know you like ReAxis, but s-gear is on another level. It's create by Mike Scuffham (designer of the Marshall JMP1 tube preamp). Check it out.
