Bill Booth also discusses the role of the freebag and wide reserve bridle -- Long ago he was showing that it was a myth that the wide bridle would extract the freebag. Still, it provides some stabilization to avoid the bag tumbling through the lines. Also covered is the issue of the weight and balance of pilot chutes -- something that may have contributed to poor launches in earlier spring loaded pilot chute designs. The topic of reserve pilot chute design is still contentious, and all spring loaded pilot chutes can bounce around in burbles, but it is good to know why UPT did what they did!

what is a freebag and what the name of those big pilot chutes that tandem jumpers use

the bag that the reserve is packed in is not connected to the canopy, as the canopy deploys it is free to leave and is pulled off by the pilot chute. It then cant impede the reserve in any way. tandems have a drogue that stablises and slows the tandem pair
