@dgbjackgibson2 жыл бұрын
That riff to Phantoms is actually in 4/4! Try and listen to Tomas' hi-hat and his snare drum carefully and you should hear it as a normal 8 bar thing. When you find the groove it is an INSANE riff. But it's so easy to get thrown off (like with most Meshuggah riffs) because the guitars are so syncopated and Tomas often does fills in places you wouldn't expect them. But if you sort of ignore what Mårten, Frederick and Dick are doing and listen to Tomas, you can often ascertain the rhythmic foundation using his hi-hat stomps, snares and cymbal rhythms as reference points. THEN you can start to work out how the guitars are syncopating around him. A little 'breakdown' of the breakdown structure for you. Split it into 8 bar pieces and it helps a little better: (By the way, these time-stamps are for the original song not for this video!) 2.54 - 3.03: [Only worth 4 bars] Guitar riff enters (don't even try to count this on your own, it was definitely recorded with a click) 3.04 - 3.20: Band enters on downbeat (3.04); very short snare fill at end of bar 8 (3.20) 3.21 - 3.37: Overdubbed guitar starts fading in during bar 7 (3.34); drum fill starts in the middle of bar 8 and continues into bar 1 of the next section 3.38 - 3.55: Section ends with longer fill on bar 8 (3.53) 3.56 - 4.12: Drum fill starts in the middle of bar 8 and continues into bar 1 of next section (Second guitar harmony fades in during this fill) and then there is a 'late' snare fill during bar 1 4.13 - 4.29: Section ends with longer fill on bar 8 (4.28) 4.30 - 4.47: Song ends on the downbeat Phew, hope that's understandable and helpful to some. Sorry it'd just the drums. The riff is surely a bitch to tab out. But I believe it repeats every 8 bars (potentially 4) which is why I've broken the structure down like this. Honestly listening to Meshuggah is like a science. They just defy every musical instinct. But hopefully this may shed some light on the obscurity of it for some. (And that's just ONE riff!) 😁

Ive been trying to figure out Phantoms. Its the coolest riff on the album.
@YouTubricant6 ай бұрын
1. Phantoms, God He Sees in Mirrors, and Armies of the Preposterous are not played on 9-string guitars; they're played on 8-string guitars with the low F tuned down to Eb. Meshuggah has done this on other songs over the years, like Nebulous. 2. Ligature Marks is not a power chord starting on the fifth fret of the F string with the root note bent up; it's a power chord starting with the open Bb string with hammer-ons on the first fret. 3. Some of your notes on Kaleidoscope are wrong. 4. Some of your notes on The Faultless are wrong, and also you palm-muted certain notes, whereas the actual riff has no palm-muting.
