Here’s a note. I really want the band to make a psychedelic live style music video for ligature marks that’s crushing and shows the band in its live setting. Wanna suggest something to people: I’ve always thought of Meshuggah as the musical personification of the cosmic horror genre, the idea of humans being tortured by something indifferent to them that is completely outside of their historicistic frame and moral paradigm to me fits with their music very well. Here’s what adds richness to this video with that in mind, although programmed by a human and given some inputs my a human, the resulting video was made by a thing that was indifferent to the way humans construct narratives and amass meaning, it was made by a machine. There’s no story to this video and if you find one, it’s one you’ve created, this video/AI does not have agency in the way that a human does and what you create to explain this video and its meaning to yourself says a lot about you as a human but very little about the actual video. Humans are meaning making machines, AI is not a meaning making machine. Plus there’s the fact the video is very reminiscent of Giger and Beksinski to add to the cosmic horror. Honestly I think this video would have been a lot cooler if they hadn’t said it was AI generated, not that it wasn’t fairly obvious, but just to leave that doubt in the mind of the viewer.

Damn, that visualizer was a trip. I never get when people refer to videos like these as a "trip", but this was otherworldly. Both Giger-esque and Lovecraftian at the same time. A bit unsettling and creepy without being too horrifying (as in, I'll still be able to sleep tonight) and, again an absolute trip of visuals. Oddly, the sensation I got from this is similar to the sensation I get looking at paintings by Salvadore Dali. If I had to guess it's all the flowing motion and shapes flowing and "running" / "melting" (like Dali's famous "melting" clocks). Really cool.

I think I know why the song intro is so effective... so evil, at least to me. Having listened to this song dozens of times, the pattern right before 1:37 is exactly the same pattern that leads into that explosive transition to distortion later on. But instead of getting that explosion, we get these echoey guitars reinforcing the scale and the mood. They're silent but they betray what is yet to come. To me, it's the embodiment of staring into the abyss and finding that something stares back. It's a being much bigger than you, observing you. You have no idea what it is capable of, yet that unmoving glare gives us a slight comfort. The guitars are sweet and dreamlike - as though this pattern will continue forever. But they exist outside of sight, orchestrating, calculating, and planning until the time is exactly right. The visualizer plays into this perfectly: the longer you look at it, the more alive it is. AI is not human, yet it shows us the conglomeration of our thoughts - it has a flat affect that beckons our instinct, but disguises itself from any moral or survivalist reading of what might be moving below.

I'm not a fan of Ai art, but this I think, is the percect use for it, something so sureal that is almost impossible for a human to make it, in such otherworldly way. The shapes that at the same time seem defined but at a closer look are merged with another thing, pretty cool, matches perfectly to the song!
