Aside from the UTTER AMAZINGNESS that is Alan, I can understand why the woman "lost it". She's blind, as I will be someday, and when someone cannot do a task correctly due to a physical hinderance (especially in front of people), a deep sense of cripling hopelessness comes over that person. I have broken down in a manor almost to that level. It is quite traumatic to watch such a scene from an outside perspective.

The practice of bleeding was an old one. It was thought that the body contained four "humors", of which one was blood. The ancient Greek physician Galen believed that blood needed to be controlled more than the other humors, so he would bleed his patients to "balance" the four humors.

@Charlee6227 so glad that doctors know better now. those poor people probably went along with the bleeding treatment because they were in such pain and believed the doctors were right and they were hoping for whatever would cure them but that is still messed up.

I hardly can understand why she's married to him if she dislikes him so much and sees him as a burden. Maybe it's because of his foxiness? Maybe? ^-^

She was abused by her father and became blind, because its the only way "not to see" such horrible things.Just self defense of her tortured soul,i guess.BTW:The english word mesmerizing has its name from him? I´m from germany and was wondering about the genuine of the word...

Letting blood was a treatment believed to let out the "bad blood" which was either infected by bad spirits or they just thought that diseases could be let out that way. Either way patients rarely survived and those that survived weren't cured. (PS: Mesmer = Mesmerise which eventually became hypnotise.)

@Amarian86 It's merely relative to their level of knowledge at the time just as our current lifestyles and medical practices are. Just as well so quickly assume everything we are doing now is right, the best way, and methods of the past obsolete, so did they too think their methods were the best.

Shouldn't it be a little less traumatic for her though? They say she has been blind since she was 3 so she should have grown up, and ergo learned to play the piano blind. I would imagine she should remember what sight was, but I don't know many two year olds who have learned to play the piano. Right? Not saying it's not something she can cry about, but I would imagine your ordeal would be worse. And as I am commenting on this I wish you the best and lots of strength.

is the poor girl having a seizure when they first come into the room? to me it looks like a panic attack but maybe they didn't know how to recognize that back then or simply didn't care. I would of been creeped out if I was her and alan tell another doctor right in front of me to stroke her. I mean eww she just met him and even though he is a professional that is still different

People at the time belived the body held at least twice as much blood than we know it does today, so while they thought they were removing a sixth or seventh of the body's blood content, they were purging maybe around a third of it. The fact of purging had a lot to do with the religion then. Religious beliefs at the time stated that when the body was sick, it was because of over-indulgence. That's why so many sick people almost or simply bled to death, and it was a normal thing to happen, too.

Your not being able to use the proper words in their proper context, makes it very unclear at to what you are trying to say.Try to keep it simple, the words you use.
