Your “1902” board was used as a nailer for the ceiling drywall. There must have been a seam there where some of the drywall didn’t reach the bottom chord of the roof truss. It looks like it’s cut at 45 degrees on one end. The two holes may have been used to snake wiring or plumbing through it, during its initial use. I bet you’ll find other wood somewhere in the cabin with those holes. Progress, progress!

One thing nice about the fungicide you are using is that it will work like an insecticide too!😄 I hate spiders in the house!!! Those big ones are a real creep factor.🥴 You could try spraying the baseboards and outside with a product called Bugstop. My Mom sprayed her base boards in the house and she killed a lot of bugs and spiders when they step on it. Might work on the scorpions. 💞

Way to go, Candice. If spraying fungicide gives you 'peace of mind' then you're not going OTT. I'd have to say 'yeah, nah' to scorpions and overly large spiders in the home. Those things belong outside and preferably far from your abode. Loved to hear your plans for fixing up the cabin and I hope it all goes according to plan. Thanks for sharing 👍

I would have done the same overkill on treating mold. You can never be too cautious for that. If cameras get too hot they will shut off. That huge spider is probably a wolf spider. Harmless, but very scary the first time you see them. Their body size can be as tall as a stair riser. Spiders hate peppermint! But you have to spray it about once a month. The first step to controlling scorpions is to control pests and insects (like beetles, crickets, moths, flies, etc.) in your house. Once their food source is removed, you can eliminate these venomous reptiles. Scorpions hate Cedar Oil and it will kill them. They also don't like Peppermint, Cinnamon, Lavender and Neem Oil. Best of luck to you guys, as you tackle that huge honey-do list! Looking forward to upcoming episodes. Take care and God Bless from Colorado!

Also, I have one more comment about the mold issue it’s called encapsulation we used to use a water-based sealer that we used to encapsulate mold after all of the treatments were done, and the cleaning was complete and everything was thoroughly dry areas like attics the floor system under the crawlspace is wood framing inside walls all got sprayed with a water-based encapsulating sealer not only does it reduce the risk of dust particles, spreading it also reduces the chances of any reoccurrence of mold and bacteria and odors

Wolf spiders vary in size and they get pretty big. Pretty harmless and eat other unwanted insects. I noticed here in Pennsylvania after my dad Redid whole house in wood slats, the wolf spiders seem way more attracted to it. I only say that because growing up we never ever seen them in the house 🤦 Stay hydrated, you're doing absolutely amazing and spraying the mold is definitely not over kill by any means. I know that tons of different types tend to look similar to black mold at different stages so its absolutely best to be safe and just erraticate it.

Those plastic jumpers are a sweat box. You are doing such a great job. Natural way to get rid of scorpions is peppermint and cinnamon. Put some peppermint oils on cotton balls and set them inside the house. Also keeping growth always from your home helps.

I’d spray the mold too so my family wouldn’t be around it. Better safe than sorry. That board with the writing might be a patch for the rafters. I found a lot of crazy stuff like that in my floor joists. If it is a patch, you might want to use a longer board with a lot more fasteners.

You go girl, taking care of business and making sure your family is safe! And it's amazing what you find when you uncover old structures: our home was the first house/doctor's office in our small town (the railroad thought, correctly, that if they brought a doctor to the area, that people would move and build here, too) built more than 140 years ago. Our family has lived here for 42 years but after the derecho that hit our county bad a few years ago, we had to replace the siding. In so doing, they revealed that there was ornamental architecture above each of the original windows of the building that matches the very ornamental door that is inside our closed-in porch that was part of the second addition to the original structure. Was truly cool! (BTW, if you go into this tiny room of our attic, you can see the original chimney and the thatched wood roof of the original structure, and if you go into this room of the basement, you can see the original "potato pit" under the kitchen addition, that terrified me as a child since you couldn't see the bottom of it, that was the "natural cold celler" for the doctor and his family when the structure was first built). Finally thought, for our cats of differing sizes (naturally small short hair to a mainecoon and a part bobcat huge boy), we always bought short storage containers for litter boxes so they had enough space.

Your friendly colour designer The most important thing about colours for a house is (more often than not) either 1 of 5 categories 1 make the house fit current trend 2 respect the past (but don't let the past get in the way of what you want) 3 historical restoration 4 go with your gut. 5. Go white. I think you should go with no. 2

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Your working so hard. I don’t blame you one bit for wanting a clean, mold free home. Are you against spraying a short lasting insecticide in and out of the cabin? Sevin is what I’ve used before and it can be used in the garden too. Just wait at least 7 days before eating the veggies. Pests have had free range in and out of the cabin for quite some time. Once all the creatures are killed out many won’t come back. Spreading fire ashes around the foundation deters pests too.

While I don't know a thing about restoring or renovating, I was wondering are you guys gonna try to isolate the rafters? If you isolate , it would keep it cool in the summer, and warmer in the winter.. Scorpions are a thing to be dealt with. They like to hide, and come out when you don't need them too.. But, I think, that stuff you were using for the mold, will drive them out. As well as the spiders. The one you killed was probably driven out from the spray. Keep it up C andence. Try to stay as safe as possible... Keep it safe for the kiddies and cats! Later Gator

What’s the age of the structure? 1890’s or is it earlier and someone else built it and sold it and moved on? Owning a house built by others from 1890’s has been a voyage of discovery for us as well. Good to see your doing preventative maintenance. That spider and scorpion were there for the same reason you are, food shelter and being out of the rain. Got a crawl space?? Can’t wait to explore it with you! I can imagine that’s loaded with scorpions spiders and termites.

The original section of log cabin might be as old as 1827. It seems in the 1980’s someone added another log cabin to the back side (now the kitchen) and added rooms above it. It has not been lived in since 2006. There is a crawl space, but only saw wolf spiders and bones.

Cedarside products with an actisol machine the ultimate crack and crevice treatment and room fogging device, and then an outdoor treatment of the perimeter and foundation and crawlspace. That’s the only way you’ll ever get rid of them rather expensive, but it works a little of the product goes a long, long way to so multiple treatments will come from one bottle of solution. The machine itself is very expensive. You may be able to hire it out. Using a local exterminator.
