I had the privilege of seeing Pastor Brooks at Camp Meeting one year. He's one of the great preachers of the SDA Church. He had a sense of humor too! His first line at the first meeting, he said, with all those that greeted me on the campground today, It just goes to prove that we all don't look alike. Hi! Any speaker cannot explain every single point in one message because of time constraints. BUT the answer is simple. Those who die because they reject God's Word for man's will die which is what God said would be the wages of sin-- death, eternal death portrayed as burning forever and ever. The burning forever and ever speaks of its--eternal effect, like Sodom and Gomorah which was destroyed with eternal fire yet is not burning today. The fire has gone out but its effect is still with us. Hope this explanation helps but if it doesn't still receive the substantive teachings that are so plain that even a child could follow. Ask the Holy Spirit for understanding and above all a love of truth and a sincere desire to follow truth as it opens to you. May God bless EVERY EARNEST SEEKER FOR TRUTH OUT THERE. Amen.

Yes, a good answer above. The reason why the fires of hell are not eternal in duration, but in their effect/to completely and utterly destroy Satan, his angels and all wicked, unrepentant sinners. What is the good in this? So that “sin will not rise up the second time,” to cause all the pain, suffering and death it has caused on earth for sooo long! We were taught that the 'wicked will burn and burn and burn forever'... Years later we were taught... When the devil and his imps and the man of sin/Pope the wicked are burning. They will burn until they are ash. For them it will seem like they are burning forever, when in fact it's just a short amount of time. If l am wrong please let me know.
