Oklahoma hosts one of the largest concentrations of carved Runic artifacts in North America. More than 6,000 Runes are found worldwide, and present a history of Scandinavian life and exploration in the Medieval Age. This TedX lecture explores scholarly efforts to determine the authenticity of North American and Oklahoman stones, and popular television entertainment programs and corporate efforts to capitalize on a different story line.
Mark Kinders is the Vice President of Public Affairs at UCO. In a private pursuit, he is the vice president of the American Association for Runic Studies. AARS investigates North American runes in affiliation with Uppsala University in Sweden, and the Swedish Council of America, and partners with the Smithsonian Institution and other universities. Kinders holds a master’s in history (University of Wisconsin-River Falls) and a doctorate in higher education (University of Arkansas).
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The 700’s are the 8th century. So if lindisfarne happened in 793 at the end of the 700’s, how is that incorrect?

There are ancient paintings on caves in Scandanavia that show "Viking like" boats during the Bronze Age. WHERE is this guy getting his information from? He MAY be an expert on runes....but he should limit his comments to them, NOT other subjects. And one question: Is he able to refute that claim that the runes found on the Kensington stone can be found in church cemetaries from the 14th century on the island of Gotland...the SAME island where those "8 Goths" came from that were mentioned on the stone? AND...that the Cistercian Catholic order, that was closely tied to the Knights Templar (and their "hooked X" rune), was VERY ACTIVE on the island of Gotland?

I once found a wood flatten stick buried next to a riverbed by the Chippewa River in Eau Claore, WI with carvings in it when I was 8 or 9 along with my brother. It had various symbols on it and resembled a boomerang in a way. I don't remember them all the carvings, but I remember seeing one that looked like an eye and for the limited knowledge of my age, I thought they looked like Egyptian symbols. Now, in retrospective, I realize that that what we found was most likely an Native American wooden artifact that was preserved by the Riverbed. I don't know whatever happened to it, we brought over to our friend's house and showed his stepdad what we found. He told us that was most likely fake, like as if he were some expert, and that someome probably carved it as a hobby and left down there in the woods. Perhaps he ended up holding on to it. All that I know is that it is a memory that stuck with me. What do you guys think it could have been? I am super curious. The closest think that I managed come by as an explanation was that it was an docorative axe or tomahawk handle, but I genuinely do not know. Perhaps it was even Viking in origins.

There is evidence that the Minoans and/or the Phoenicians were in Lake Superior to mine copper on Isle Royale. A plaque with ancient inscriptions was found in the UP which is thought to be from that era. Who KNOWS if these groups explored in the Wisconsin area or left inscriptions like you found, maybe WHERE you found it or it drifted down the river to WHERE you found it.

Why are all of these artefacts assumed to be Scandinavian runes? The Kensington stone looked more like Coelbren (British/Cymraeg) which ties in with the recorded journey of Prince Madoc circa 570. Lee Pennington of the Kentucky Historical Society has been studying this for decades. See also Britain's Hidden History which has tons of information based on authentic written records and archaeological evidence.

How do we tell an ancient script from another? Many symbols are the same. My artefact could be Norse, Turckic, Mediterainian or ???. All I know is the "charactor" was impressed before the stone solidified.

The same could be said for the Universities stand point, were as we could say is taking a position with mainstream archeology who are trying to debunk Geologist who study in a separate field of expertise. It is so often we find that archeologist misrepresent facts, and misconstrue time periods of construction that whole cultures are lost from history, simply because they don't conform to pseudoarcheology and the producers way of thinking. The presentation of iconography in objects like Oreo cookies is no reason to suggest that these people of America Unearthed are not Legitimate... I would call the speech just a platform used to attack some group or someone you were afraid of....

@Edmund Halling exactly. Even Scandinavians get a laugh out of all of the Americans who still argue that it's real 😆
@AndyAJH251
@AndyAJH251 4 жыл бұрын
@Edmund Halling There are 2 factors here: the presence of the dotted R (a character unknown to early scholars who dismisses it as a hoax so how would an uneducated immigrant in the late 1800s have any awareness if it) and geologic weathering clearly observed under microscopic examination of the split side dating the stone at least a few hundred years prior to the discovery of the KRS have not been explained by people simply claiming “it’s a hoax”.
@AndyAJH251
@AndyAJH251 4 жыл бұрын
@Edmund Halling That’s simply incorrect and is the same conclusion early scholars had as the rune was not discovered until post 1930s. The dotted R has been found and documented from inscriptions on grave slabs from the late 13th - early 14th century. Specifically the Ukna church inscriptions and the Lund bone 4 just to name a couple.
@AndyAJH251
@AndyAJH251 4 жыл бұрын
@Edmund Halling Under slight magnification and 3D modeling you can clearly see the carver intentionally punched those marks on the dotted R characters and compare them to other intentionally made dots on other runes. "Natural indents" might have been a plausible theory prior to modern technology. The carver used too much force on the first one and chipped off the upper portion of the R. He did not make the same mistake on the others.

I really wanted this to be real, but if you do 15 min of unbiased research you'll probably conclude it's most likely fake. There's a lot of evidence against it.

@ScottJB

@@ultramagahoosierhermit2767 What's interesting is there is some cool evidence in Canada for Vikings reaching the area. I've heard there have even been Icelandic people with Native American DNA maternal haplogroup (the Vikings took some Native women back to Greenland and eventually Iceland). So there are plenty of signs of contact up there but not down in Minnesota. If you watch Jackson Crawford's KZbin channel, he's a very evidence based expert but not in the academic ivory tower and even left academia. He did an analysis of it and he tears the Kensington stone to shreds easily. I recommend checking it out.
