I've been struggling to find a way back into art for about a month now. I could never seem to find someone who explained it in a way that made sense to me. After watching your first video on the Loomis method, I started to grasp the concept and started working in three dimisions on my own. I can't wait to watch the rest of your videos. Definitely a subscriber now.

My KZbin offers a lot of drawing info but if you want my best classes where I give away a ton of drawing tips, tricks, and best practices then I would recommend you sign up for my Skillshare. I also have a new book coming out on June 11, 2024 that you can order. I've been watching Loomis Head videos for weeks and I assumed I'd just have to memorize the step-by-step process. So, I followed along with you, basically copying what you were doing until at 17:55 when you said, "The biggest thing when it comes to the Loomis head is this right here ... " and suddenly it all clicked. Huge breakthrough. I stopped the video and just started drawing random heads from side planes that I created on the fly. Amazing. It all just came together like a light going on. And now I feel like I can orient a head in any direction I like and get the general proportions right. (I still have to work on drawing the features of the face.) Thank you so much for creating this video and for that immensely valuable insight.

I love receiving feedback like this! Glad it was helpful for you. Idk if you are aware but I do have premium classes available on my Skillshare were it is much more of a "class room" type setting with drawing projects due at the end of each class. I teach foundational methods as well as more advanced approaches for drawing human portraits and even animals. Here is a link if you want to sign up for that: www.skillshare.com/en/r/profile/Messer-Creations/623104613

These last two head tutorials were great.... exactly what I was looking for. Now I can "quickly" draw heads for the animations I'm planning to start next year. The key is quickly. I'm not trying to be a detailed super artist. I'm simply planning to animate things and need to be able to draw heads and bodies at various angles quickly. And this is coming from someone who has very little drawing talent.

@@MesserCreations Just re-watched this video. You forgot one angle and I can't seem to find it anywhere. What about the direction where the head is at a 3/4ths of an angle facing away from us? An angle where you can still see part of one eye and the side of the nose while the head is facing away? I'm having a rough time trying to visualize it using the loomis method.

I had never heard of 'The Loomis Method' but I realized that I learned to draw people from a book given me in 1986 by an artist friend who bought it in 1958. Turns out it's called "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth." by Andrew Loomis. Great text on drawing, composition and perspective. Good to see it in action now that I am back into making art 30+ years later.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this one. No extraneous information and babble we don't need. Really straight forward, calm voice, super clear. Thank you. I have an A3 page full of little Loomis heads and I'm going to keep going until I don't have to think about it. One question. If you are trying to draw the circles freehand (ie not measuring with the set of compass) then how do you know what proportion the ovals are going to be? Are we trying to get a square into four equal squares? Many thanks. Oh yes, I'm doing your course over on Skillshare as well. I've been a member there for quite a few years now and love it. 😊
@MesserCreations2 жыл бұрын
Hey Beverley! That’s it, just draw as many as you possibly can. It’s all about muscle memory and getting completely comfortable with the basic structure of a head. To answer your question, most all ovals are going to be the same size roughly. The top of the oval lines up with the hairline so you can gage where the top of your oval will be based on the reference in question. I would not recommend blocks and rectangles unless that is what makes sense for you. I will be uploading more classes to my Skillshare in the coming weeks where I will be drawing basic features and showing how you can place them on certain heads all with references. Thanks for being a part of the MC fam. Hope that answered your question? Take care 😊🙌🏻

I'm so glad! The biggest difference between the Loomis and Reilly methods is that Reilly focused more on "rhythm lines". Where Loomis focused more on the basic structure of the head. Lots of people say that Loomis is easier because of its simplicity compared to Reilly.

Thank you for this, but may i ask how we will be able to figure out the side plane? How thick or how thin it is? I am so confused about the side plane of the head, people randomly draw the side plane without direct guide or directions as if they already memorize the exact measurements of how thick or how thin it is. Thank you❤
