My husband will never get rid of me because when I decluttering snd organize, I rearrange things. He said he needs me to find things. Lol. Also, when I want to have hubby declutter t shirts, etc. what I do is get a few of the items at a time, during commercials and ask if he wants each item. Then do this each commercial and the t shirts get decluttered rather quickly. Otherwise, he’s never get rid of anything. Married over 39 years, snd this works for us. I win by getting things decluttered and he wins by being able to decide if he wants the item or not.

Unfortunately, this does not work with my husband of 47 years! He gets angry and says if I ask him about this or that (15 year old pollo shirt covered in dust) he will not get rid of anything when I ask! I have to just let him hoard all the clothes he wants...😟
@iceman31953 жыл бұрын
Dana Brown sounds like there’s a deeper concern from his perspective, anger in a response to something so trivial like a simple question about a T-shirt usually isn’t really what’s happening, see if you can go out somewhere and talk about how it makes him feel when you ask questions like that. Maybe he feels overwhelmed or anxious/fearful, or like he’s being criticised. Worthwhile unpacking that.

I have developed 2 approaches to impuls buying: Sometimes I go to a big department store and load up a cart with all the stuff I think I want to buy, then I park the cart somewhere for a while, walk away from it and kind of meditate on the question: "Do I really need THAT?" Then I go back to the cart and put it all back on the shelves and leave without buying anything. Sometimes just driving that item around in the cart fulfilled the urge to possess that item. (This approach also makes shopping at IKEA a lot easier. Before the checkout I take a good look at every item and ask myself if I really need that. There are always a few items that have to stay there... I shared this with a colleague I was shopping with and she came to the office the next day and told me that her boyfriend loves me very much. 🤣 He was very excited when she told him how much she didn't buy 😁) The second one I developed quite recently: When finding something I have the urge to buy, I ask myself "Will I kick myself tomorrow for NOT buying this thing?" It takes some practice but after a while you will get a clear answer every time you ask yourself this question. And you can use the question for things you need as well as for items that you just find pretty and they make you smile. Sometimes you just fall into one of those marketing traps and that questions helps you get some distance. So those 2 work very well for me. Maybe they inspire somebody else, too.

I actually feel like I can relate to this video. I don't have kids. I live in a small condo. My husband thinks that I am a hoarder because I have spent the last nine years trying to organize our home. Last year, right when the pandemic hit, I made a decision that I wanted to make a huge change in our life. Our place is small so it looks as if we have a lot of stuff. If we had a bigger place my husband would see that we don't. Last year, I realized that I was tired of always organizing my stuff. It was becoming overwhelming and it's really put my life on hold. I really hate it. My husband thinks I won't get the house done. He thinks it won't last, etc. I have never been afraid to get rid of stuff. Last year, I took a bunch of clothes and donated them to the homeless center in our area. It felt really good doing that. From there, I have just been working on our place little by little. I started tackling my art room and really organizing it to where I can find my crafts. I have not sat down and done a craft in years because I am so overwhelmed with the way my home looks. I am determined to prove to my husband that I can do this and stay on top of it. I believe that minimalism is different for everyone. I think the true minimalist people who are strict about it, in my opinion, tend to be pushy and very one-sided. I don't think minimalism works for everyone. I certainly could not own one pair of jeans. I love clothes! I also certainly could never give up shopping or try to live a zero waste life. I do my best and do my best to help the environment as well. I love reusing stuff over and over again for sure. I have completely made sure to have my name taken off every single piece of junk mail that heads my way. I get hardly any mail these days and I love it so much. You do what works for you and your life. That's what matters the most. I hope this year to complete my goal that I am working on right now. :)
@HannahRainbow883 жыл бұрын
Minimalism is also called "intentional living" - you get rid of stuff you don't use/love/need and keep/focus on the things you DO! I'd say everyone can do that, but it looks different for every person depending on what they're into :)

👉 I also have a bf who doesn't mind my decluttering, but for everyone struggling with their partners hoarding or not wanting to get rid of anything - give them time, what worked for me, was a few things 1. Randomly talking about how decluttering makes our life easier, cleaner... telling him /her what I have learned from youtube videos..? 2. Dont pressure him/her 3. Show a before and after a certain declutter area - how better it is - more space etc. 3. Try to ask them if you can donate or sell some of their stuff - because them knowing that item could make someone else happy mightmotivate them. Don't start with the sentimentals. And do it when they are in a good mood. 4. Maybe one time they will say no - some other time they won't care, so try it a few times, also explain the meaning behind decluttering. 😃💚

I now have a space for everything and when I need a tool to fix something or need to find something to wear, the decision is so much less stressful and time consuming!! Over the past year, evidently just me organizing and decluttering most of the rest of the house and my clothing inspired my hoarding husband to let me help declutter his music/junkroom/closet and we donated 5 kitchen bags and 3 more to family of clothes and shoes and I lost count of the number of just trash bags!! Thank you soo much. My life is MUCH less stressed with family health issues to deal with, too. ♥️🥰

Yes! You can’t change anyone. Setting that example is being an inspiration! Totally worked when I was living with my last boyfriend. I just started to declutter my own things and the areas of our home that he didn’t care what I did with. Always asked him to approve if I wanted to donate something of his that I found along the way. When I went through my own closet one time I asked him if I could go through his closet aswell and put the items that were torn or the items I thought he didn’t need on the bed for him to look at and he agreed on that. And he actually was fine getting rid of all those things I pulled out. When I was going through my closet once more at a later date he came into our bedroom and asked if we could go through his closet together when I was done decluttering mine. Win!

The best thing I have found to help with impulse buying is to write it down! As soon as you see something in an ad, parousing a store down a random aisle, scrolling online... Write the thing down. Then go home/wait and think about it. You're not saying no or restricting yourself, if you want it you can go have it. Just give yourself a waiting period. 99% of the time you look back at your wishlist and think, what? No I don't need that. The things you really did want will feel so much more special when you actually decide to purchase them with intention.

great tips...I would suggest one thing...instead of getting rid of things right away, duplicates and other things we want to declutter can be packed away in boxes and stored in garage or in a room for three to six months and then once confirmed, can be given away, to avoid buying something accidentally and making sure that those can be given away for good:)

@@KHBogWitch I’m afraid at the beginning that might overwhelm her. Maybe just pull out a small category of things, like shoes. Get rid of the worn out ones and the ones you don’t wear. Or an underwear drawer. I watch KZbin videos about decluttering while I declutter and this puts me in the mindset of starting. What is overwhelming to me is is the clutter in my home. But it is so much better now that I’ve been doing small areas at a time. First walk around with a garbage bag and throw away any trash you find. That’s a good first step!
@SimplyTresha3 жыл бұрын
You totally don't need to pull everything out to declutter well. Go to a junk drawer or closet and start there - get rid of junk you don't need (trash- damaged items, non working items; donate - things you have multiple of, things you no longer want or like... put this in an amazon box and immediately put this in your trunk to get it out of your house; things that don't belong - put them where you look for them or where they belong). Once you see it start to look cleaner and more manageable you will be motivate to continue.

Hi! I'm enjoying your channel. I just came over from the Minimal Mom and I am looking forward to watching your journey. I am definitely starting from a messy point but have been making progress the last 2 months since finding the Minimal Mom. I had a situation with my husband a few weeks ago while trying to declutter the kitchen. I put a few utensils in the garage to just see if we could get along without them before actually getting rid of them and one thing was a small spatula that I NEVER use because I just always use the same one no matter what. But my husband asked for it once and I ignored it but a few days later he asked again so I said, "fine" and went and got it. He apparently uses it frequently and said our teenage daughter uses it too so I ha eto keep that one. I do have a pretty good idea though of what I can just get rid of and what needs to be set aside for a wait and see kind of thing. Anyway, just an idea for some.

Vlogging as a family wasn’t a good fit for us! I respect my kids’ privacy and autonomy and making content around those boundaries was becoming too difficult.

Unrelated to the point of the video, you inspired me to purchase a frother for my coffees and I use it for scrambled eggs too! I LOVE using it!!!

I drive my fiancé crazy with the rearranging. He never notices me getting rid of stuff until I re-do the flow of a newly decluttered room 😅

Same! 😅 He doesn't notice stuff is gone unless things are in different spots! Is it a guy thing?
