When he wins he is a turkish nationalist that should play for the country he glorifies. When he loses he is a turkish nationalist that should play for the country glorifies. Seriously, even though much of the hate also came from German racists, him not singing the anthem and worshipping Erdogan would never fly in Turkey if it was reversed but people like to pretend he was a good guy because worse people hated him for the wrong reason

His quote "when I win I'm German, when I lose I'm Turkish" is really true because he remembered his Turkishness after 2017. I'm not justifying what Germans did to him, he wasn't the reason Germany was knocked out in 2018 World Cup. But he never cared about us, he was the "German Özil" when winning World Cup, playing in Real Madrid and Arsenal. Suddenly, he became "Turkish Mesut", playing in Turkish clubs and sharing nationalist stories. I was never angry nor offended when he played for Germans (and even scored against us), but he's opportunist guy trying to follow the trends. He is the embodiment of German Turks only coming here for vacations but brag about everything is perfect and people living there should be grateful. If he is embraced by Germans again, I know he will ditch what he is doing now. Because he is Turkish, when he lose.

I would agree that this is a big part of it. I will never demand that people forget where their families come from, or cut ties or anything. Remembering your own or your families past is important. And I highly doubt it is easy to do so, I see it in my own familiy who is polish on my fathers side generations ago that alot of that was lost over the years. If you do decide to play for a nation, it is only normal that the people expect you to give it your all for said nation if you are on the field. And I am talking about EVERY player - an issue germany had the last few years where it seemed alot of players don't really care enough to put in real effort. And granted, Özil always had issues with that, not only when playing for germany. But as far as I've seen his nationality or backround was never mentioned, only his lack of effort in itself. His actions after that were what made him look bad in the eyes of many people. Not only his close ties to Erdugan, but how he reacted. Obviously people wanted to know where he stood and he first didn't say anything, and later it seemed through actions that he admitted to never care about Germany in the first place. A land that gave him opportunity, who was instrumental for his career. It is not hard to understand why people really didn't like that. Just in general people tend to like someone being thankful and humble - in the end he was the exact opposite. I think the actions of the national team were fine. You can ask your player for a statement. The actions of arsenal to me are also fine, to distance from his personal political agenda and post (he can have that opinion, but don't expect a football team to stand behind it, especially if it is an english one), but it seems like he expected both to help him as if he is a kid that is not responsible for his own actions. He sure was a great player in skill, even with his lack of effort at times. But the main reason why people remember other players from the 2014 national team more are those factors around the play on the field. And I think this has little to do with racism in the sense that they don't have him for having turkish roots, but dislike him for his own actions and seemingly disrespect for the country.

@@Rakshiir Your comment is racist. Body language policing. Özil was regularly the top runner on all his teams in every game. He once ran 15km and made 31 sprints, assisted a goal, and was criticized for “looking” lacklustre. That is pure racism. He doesn’t have the white supremacist “air” of a far lazier Toni Kroos. @@Rakshiir Well, considering Germany's stance on the whole Israel vs Palestine conflict, however, it's not wrong to say that Germany currently actually DOES support a genocide. He's just a disappointment. Just because the wrong people in Germany criticized him too doesn't mean he didn't do nothing wrong. No country would accept someone who has clearly loyalty to another country over the one he plays for in their national team, compare him to people like Emre Can / Gündogan and you see the problem. No one forced him to play for Germany, it was his decision yet he felt like praising Erdogan who was talking shit about Germany at the time, never sang the anthem and since then turned into a turkish nationalist / right wing extremist. What happened with Özil is a really sad story. While he was a role model for successful integration at a time, there were always racist remarks made towards him throughout his career. I still think most Germans liked him until the foto with Erdogan and his reaction towards the criticism. I think outside of German not many people know how much Erdogan was hated by everyone in Germany at that point, mostly for constantly criticising Germany, our politicians and holding us for ransom in political deals. It also didn't help, that he never sang the national anthem and played like he was bored sometimes. I think if he had made the same statement as Gündogan, who is way more popular in Germany now, he wouldn't be in such big trouble, but of couse Özil is a personal friend of Erdogan and a Turkish nationalist, so he really wanted to support Erdogan. I think for a lot of Germans this was the confirmation they needed that Özil had never actually cared about Germany in the first place. Which is sad, that those doubts were there, don't get me wrong, but Özil didn't just not try to put them out, he actively seemed to stoke those fears at the time.

They grew up in a Germany with good quality of life and an open society but they end up facing the new norms of political correctness and values that conflict with their culture. In my opinion the german football federation is too deep into politics, it's his personal free choice who to support, no matter if he is a star or not. I am not sure if he hs "the most hated player" or anything. He did earn alot of criticism with some actions at the end of his career, and I can understand why. If you play for a nation, people expect you to stand for the nation and represent it. If they find out that you turn against it, alot of questions tend to pop up in their heads like: Did he only play for our nation because he was able to win titles with it? How ungrateful can you be, when a land gives you so many opportunities and you act in this way? Not something many people like. He certainly was a good player, I would say he sometimes seemed "not invested" to work on the field, which I personally dislike. I know other creative players are similar but I still don't really like it. Besides that, as mentioned, I get why his actions created those negative reactions in the end. Some players I think have more of a legacy after ending their career because of that.

Ozil was a great player but like many other ballers never lived up to his full potential. I think the move to aresnal is what caused all of this. Tbh I don’t think those players will ever get preferential treatment in Germany. Especially nowadays with players like sane playing horrid every chance he gets, it just shows to some people that believe in this notion that foreign/mixed ethnic players won’t give as much as ethnic players. Germany is very unique in how they play football, they don’t rely on talent to win them games like France or England so ofc when you have such a relative change in the different cultural composition in the team it will be affected. I am German too and while he is definitely rather liked and seen as a World Cup and Real legend, he also has gotten lots of hate, ofc primarily online, and is not that cleanly liked in the politically bizarre regions of Germany in the east. His Erdogan picture was not that big of a deal as it's made to seem here. I mean Gündogan was also in the picture and (almost) nobody dislikes him. It was however the start of Özil let's say "critical" statement about his ethnicity. His statement wasn't well liked (basically said "sry not sry, I don't support Erdogan, ur racist") and it didn't help that he continued to invite Erdogan to his wedding a while after that. You also have to remember that this was the phase where "50% of German-Turks vote for Erdogan" was big in the headlines, further amplifying the situation. Erdogan in general was at the time the most polarizing, "bad" person since Osama even with Putin invading Crimea. When the national team started to show signs of failing the hate wasn't as big as it was made to seem, but when Özil then chose not to sing the German anthem and further doubled down the Özil hate found it's 2nd zenith and you then didn't only have a few idiots hating on him, but again broader media criticizing him like with the Erdogan photo. The difference was that this was the 2nd time this has happened and between the first time and the 2nd time, Özil did not show any signs of "learning from his mistakes". In fact this repeated itself after this controversy and he distanced himself acutely from Germany and his German side. You may be a bit young to know how the landscape in the media was during the mid 2010s, but Özil was heavily criticized for his actions and yes, there has also been quite a big of hate, ofc primarily from the more right-wing people (or extremist, I honestly don't know if the AfD was already deep into the radical right at that time).

Özil showed us that Turks will never be accepted in German society. 2/3-3/4 of the turkish population in Germany are traditionalists (in favor of erdogan) and the treatment of özil from Germany was a stab in the back. Since then i was always against Germany in football games, not because i hate them more because they hate us. I hope that musiala and many other football players that arent Full ethnic germans wont get the same treatment as özil but if we are being realistic, it wont be any different.

Özil was never loyal to Germany because he never sang the German hymne in the games. It's a shame that he got a price for well-integration. I know foreigners living in Germany that are better integrated than him.

@alexandracruz5243 what is a hymne? Are players supposed to sing or play football? I don't know if you ever noticed but Spanish players never ever singing the anthem? But are world cup and euro cup winners. Ozil is one of the best German player of all time and nothing can change that.

@@ErichSermon If you are a player representing a country, the least that you should do is singing the German hymne together with your teammates. Özil was one of the few players that never was singing, what is totally disrespectful. Thank God we had a team in the Euro 2024 where all players were singing the hymne and identy with Germany. The hymne of Spain does not have a text and that's why the players do not sing. But I'm sure they all would do if there was a text.

@@alexandracruz5243 so the answer is that all of the Spanish players are not singing and it is totally fine. Than when you maybe watch other sport than football, you will realise that many players playing handball, basketball, hockey etc are nit singing through national anthem. I understand that you don't give a damn about that because you are just another racist in picking just ozil for doing this. But even in the German national team there are always some players nit singing, but you choose only ozil. Last question from my side do you think a football player should sing better or play better football?

@@ErichSermon You can't sing a hymne without text 🤣 Of course, you have to play the racist card against me without knowing me. By the way, I wrote in my last comment that I like the new team that identifies with Germany that includes players like Gundogan, Rüdiger, Can and others with foreigner parents. I'm not racist, I just don't want opportunist and disloyal players representing my new home Germany. Although I wasn't born here, I love this country. if you want to play the racist card, better do it with your dear Özil that is now known for supporting the Turkish extreme right with wolves symbols.
