Actually, Mark Zuckerberg might have thoroughly screwed himself with that screenshot of the Eiffel Tower. That building and all visual representations of it is actually a Trademark, owned by some French guy. If that asset is on the blockchain now, that's potentially one massive legal landmine waiting to blow up whoever touched it last, as well as anyone who owns the Metaverse in which it exists. We'll have to see how it plays out, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that mess when the shoe finally drops.

@@matthewshiers9038 Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. I think you might be mistaken. I quickly looked into this and If I'm correct what you're referring to as a "trademark" is the copyright for the illumination of the Eiffel Tower. TL;DR in 1990 a French court has ruled that the 1989 illumination made for the 100th anniversary of the tower is an "original visual creation" protected by copyright. Since then any illumination of the Tower has been considered a separate work of art that falls under copyright. The Tower itself has been in public domain since 1993 and the tower in the picture doesn't feature any illumination so I don't think any trademarks or copyrights are being violated here.

I've said this elsewhere, I think, but part of the reason Facebook was so successful was that it was cheap (technically free if you don't count the data harvesting aspect), easy to sign up, and had a lot of utility for the user. People *wanted* to sign up to talk with friends and family, find like-minded individuals, and otherwise engage with the product as intended. The Metaverse, as presented by Meta, is the exact opposite of that. It has a massive buy-in (just getting the VR headset puts it out of the price range of many consumers), it's clunky and awkward to use, and it provides no obvious utility to the user. It's something that *only* makes sense from the perspective of an executive trying to find new ways to extract money from customers, without concern about the end user experience.

Not only does it not add any features of any value it makes things more complicated. Like that news about their deal with McDonald's. So you can go into a virtual McDonalds in Horizon Worlds and order a burger, and that burger will be delivered to your doorstep in real life. Ok.... but how is this easier or more convenient than opening up Ubereats or Doordash on my phone and ordering McDonalds from there? Its not, it just adds extra steps and makes the whole process more convoluted. turns something that you can do on your phone in a minute into a much longer ordeal. Who at Meta (or McD for that matter) thought this was a good idea??
@Mrinsecure
@Mrinsecure 2 жыл бұрын
@@Custodian405 There is a theoretical world where this isn't a bad idea. If you're engaging with literally every other aspect of your life via Horizon Worlds (or another Metaverse app), then centralizing it and allowing you to engage in mundane commercial transactions via Web3 infrastructure at least has some convenience and novelty built in. But given how clunky and inaccessible it is, no one is going to be doing that who isn't a diehard advocate.

8:18 Well, the term "Metaverse" originated in 1992 in the cyberpunk novel _Snow Crash_ by Neal Stephenson. It was depicted as a successor to the Internet that was a fully immersive virtual environment accessed using a PC or a "public terminal" equipped with a laser projector that projected the images from the Metaverse onto a pair of reflective goggles worn by the user. It depicted the Metaverse as an infinitely long street people could freely travel along with vast amounts of land on either side of it that anyone could purchase plots of and utilize for their own purposes. Some plots of land were open to the public while others were private residences or exclusive clubs and avatars came in all shapes and sizes (at one point, Stephenson mentions the protagonist passing by some avatars that look like giant phalluses). In other words, the Metaverse was basically Second Life (which was inspired by Snow Crash, btw) but in VR.

Now that I'm older I can finally put it into words: it's if I'm grinding my time into dust, instead of moving into a new thing that will add more great things to my perception. I have always really hated it. Btw, I'm a actually game designer myself... Looking back, maybe instinctively perceiving this pattern when I was younger was exactly what made me decide to be one. Over 10'000 employees assigned to their meta-verse division, and now ten years after acquiring Oculus, they still have less to show for it than what less than 10 VRChat indie devs were able to release five years ago. It boggles the mind honestly. Roughly two years ago I got the chance to meet someone who at the time was working at Meta in their Horizon Worlds team, and the stories she told about how frustratingly clueless and disinterested her co-workers were about VR and the thing they were building, sounded like what you'd get if you took a load of 60 year old mechanical engineers and asked them to design a video game. Stuff like how after months of effort, they managed to persuade a few co-workers to create an account on VR Chat and join them there for a "lockdown Halloween party". Their co-workers were apparently mind blown at seeing an avatar with moving legs, and asked her what kind of animation system was controlling it. She had to kick her feet and tell them, "It's not an animation, these are my legs! I've been trying to tell you about this for years already!" Fortunately she quit Meta since then, and moved onto developing freelance for VR, and making content for VRChat.

it's hilarious how meta, amazon, disney and etc goes about entertainment with the "throw enough money at it and it'll be good", and then puts the most cowardly and risk averse people to work on it... like, you already invested faaaaaaaar more than anyone on the competition would ever dream to invest in this, but you are afraid to take risk with the product itself??????? it's literally like paying billions already just for enzo ferrari to design a car for you, and then restricting him completely about what you think is too much risk to assume. I mean, if you have zero faith about creating artistic entertainment, if you are that much terrified about risk... why invest THAT much into something????? I mean, isn't the "metaverse" inherently a gamble??? investing billions on it and avoiding everything you deem a "risk" in the process is like buying all the tickets to a lottery and then locking them up a coffer and droping it in the ocean, to avoid being robbed...

tbh if I had that much money to invest into something that big, instead of having an immense division to work on it I would just make smaller divisions with full creative liberty and see wich ones shows more promise. this means that most of the money invested on it would be "lost", because only the best projects and most popular artstyles and visions would be greenlighted. but in the other side, you would get a strong artistic identity, that would make you stand apart, and you would lose an infinitesimally smaller investment on these small projects than what you would lose if, I don't know, if I had only one unified vision development team hardware team and etc and it turned out to be complete s**t because of all the restraints and lack of creative liberty lol and damn, if we are talking about a social media, why not turn it into some kind of virtual event? like opening it up for people to vote and decide wich design looks better, and giving some kind of prize to the best design teams... I mean, there would have to be ways to avoid people getting overly competitive and too stressed out about it, but in the other side it would make it seem like these technologies were being developed for real people, with the own users input. it would look like something with a SOCIAL purpose, you know? damn, meta should fire zuck and hire me instead lol even I make a better ceo it seems

@@gustavogoesgomes1863 Good ideas and good points. I've always wondered why the people who actually have all the money in the world are the dumbest mofos on the planet in so many ways. It's just common sense- if you're risk adverse, then don't go into opening your own business or running a multi-billion dollar company. People with tremendously less money are running their own businesses and failing, but Fuckerberg can't be bothered to waste at lease half a billion dollars to even put a LITTLE effort in this Meta BS? As my current employment as a 3D technical artist, creating VR multiplayer simulation training, so I have a few insights/opinions to all this. This is horrendous. Its incredible that the VR headset that they build, look like this. Having worked with the Quest 2 since its inception out I can't understand this at all. I have had a lot of their models and looking at their code (basically unusable), I'm surprised how incredibly unstructured they are. This is what i would aspect of an intern. There is a consistent lack of any structure and it different feels like the number of people who come in and then left shortly after, the pipeline that would have been setup for this type of project have never been developed. I don't ever see this take off. But what it did, however, was it boosted any and all sales on VR training and other types of VR-related projects. which was nice.

Has Mark never heard of Second Life? It is probably one of the most fully realized VR environments, and it's never expanded beyond its niche despite many famous brands opening up virtual spaces in it during its early years. SL has become equal parts of Minecraft's creativity, a thriving small currency market, and a hive of debased debauchery, depending on where you visit. If anyone wanted to see what a mature VR space would look like, all they need to do is play Second Life. It's free.
@UnknownSquid
@UnknownSquid 2 жыл бұрын
There's two key major differences between SL and Horizon Worlds. One in favour of each. On Horizon's side, is that it's built for actual fully immersive VR, whilst SL is a virtual world experienced flat. In my opinion this is why SL remained niche. It was too early. It had the vision, but not the technology required to make it as compelling a "second life" as it needed to be. Even at it's best, it's more of an activity, relatively disembodied and easy to disconnect from, rather than something a person "exists in" directly. On Second Life's side, is genuine creativity and freedom. Horizon allows you to customise an avatar within their simplistic avatar creator, and has decent enough world building tools, but ultimately it's bland and soulless. Second Life has since day one, been a place built by creative minds with the total freedom to shape the world in their own image, rather than just a sterile and restrictive playground for consumers as imagined by corporate aliens. Horizon worlds will fail to gain any traction with real people, unless it stops fearing real people, and figures out that they don't actually all want to look like corporate clip art.

Reading this, it seems like the two need to merge. SL’s freedom with the VR space Meta owns. But… I doubt anyone will let that happen. Though SL had it’s dark side, and you needed to spend real cash to own ‘land” there. It was pretty hard to fully immerse when you can’t open your purchases because you don’t have your own home base with admin permissions.

Man 2 billion poured into making something that still feels lifeless. God rockstar had a budget multiple times lower than that and pumped red dead redemption 2 which is arguably one of the greatest titles ever. NFTs and Blockchain technology never belonged in the gaming industry and as a software developer myself I just can't seem to understand why people go to these types of companies. All these forever growth type companies are getting stomped hard by the government and they should have never been so valued so high. Also part of the fault is the public for letting these companies take over and using their services. Mark Zuckerberg got lucky when he stole the idea of Facebook and was never a great visionary at all. We're seeing it unravel right before our eyes.

For me, metaverse is still a concept and honestly, no one really knows what it will be. But companies are rushing to make their own version like it is a gold mine. They believe this is the "future" and they are trying beat each other out to whoever make it first. This is like when we discovered flight. As long as it does not work, people will just mock it. Though I have to agree with you, with all the modern games we have now, Zuckerberg's version is truly disappointing. He could have done better to appeal to the masses. Im just optimistic in the concept of the metaverse where we combine reality from the virtual world but on a larger scale. Whatever its final form would be, I hope it is great.

SL is one of the biggest reasons I never even wanted to invest in Meta, let alone engage in its virtual world. SL was doing everything Meta speculatively promises, and more, decades before the Zuck even conceived his idea. Sure, you can't put on a VR headset and engage in first person simulation in SL, but that's just gimmicky fluff rather than a concrete system that keeps players coming back. VR technology is still very much in its infancy and hasn't really progressed much from the earliest examples decades ago. In addition to other VR experiences being out in the market and well established, Meta is just coming at this from the wrong angle with too little, far too late.

as someone who's been in Horizon Worlds (Meta's Metaverse) quite a bit let me tell you what it's like. It's always pleasant, but only ever pleasant. it's a constant "this is pretty ok". sure you're unlikely to have a terrible time because it's so safe but in that safety you'll never have large amounts of fun. Some of the most fun i've had in VRChat was had while doing things Facebook would never allow. we swore, wore avatars with little clothing, or were our favourite characters, or even wore avatars we felt best expressed who we are, and we watched popular movies for free together. Never in all my time in Horizon Worlds did I ever experience anything close to that level of joy and euphoria, however with that I never had to face crashers or people messing with my vision by adding filters that cause IRL nausia.
