Meta Quest 3 is HERE! | Worth The Hype?

This will be my first VR headset. I’ve played the quest 2 a few times from a friend, but waited and waited until the 3 was releasing to purchase a headset. I’m extremely excited to be able to play either way, I found out my brother (who lives in a different state and I only see every few years) plays VR on his quest 2. So now we will be able to hang out and play together and visit. That to me is worth every penny.

Going from Q1 to Q3 is a massive improvement. I was really surprised with the Q2 coming from my Valve Index which I sold soon after.

Yeah same, I had a Q1 and loved it but didn’t have the money to buy a Q2 at launch so I waited until a new headset. Finally having this is a huge jump and I’m super excited for the massive jump from 1 to 3.

I’m really looking forward to picking mine up tomorrow. My Quest 2 has been sitting dormant for the last few months, but I think the mixed reality options for the Quest 3 will help put me back in the mood for VR. I’m looking forward to replaying some of my favorite titles.

It would've been a lot more interesting if you had spent some time now in the last weeks getting your Q2 back up and running, just to refresh your memory on the experience (better for being able to judge the changes). However, as @TheVektast mentioned, if you hadn't found a love/use for it before, you probably won't all of a sudden be re-blown away by VR....unfortunately. However, maybe the MR will be your thing :) I'm very much looking forward to trying it myself and seeing how quickly the development and options for that take off.

Going from Q1 to Q3 is a massive improvement. I've been using my quest 1 for 3 years, until it stopped working well. the quest 3 is going to be an immense difference because of all the improved details. i personally like the quest 1 fov changer. the quest 2 has you take off the headset to change it, DONT like that at all. overall i think the quest 3 is heavenly.

My quest 3 arrived today, and i immediately tasted the three things i want to check. Fov, black level, and the quality of the lenses. And i surprised how good Quest 3 was. First about fov. Compared to quest 2 with 92° for me, i get 104° in my quest 3. Very good jump from my old quest 2. This is really feel wider and more open compared to quest 2 with binocular look. 😃 Next, the pancake lenses. Wow, the sharpnes and the quality of these lenses are great. Also, because of the better resolution of quest 3, you can easily read the texts. When you use these lenses, mark my words,you can't go back to fresnel lenses in quest 2. 😄 And finally, about the black level, i surprised how good the black level was. I even compared it with my quest pro with local dimming on, and the black level is really the same with quest pro. Im surprised. Of course, because the diplays of quest 3 are lcd, you have not the oled black lvl.but for a lcd display this is really good.😃 Overall, i really liked Quest 3. It's a really big jump from already good quest 2 😮

Totally agree with you on the lack of a big launch title. Quest 2 had Saints and Sinners and that was my big launch game for it. Made the Q2 release feel a lot more special. Assassins Creed should've come out at launch. Would've added so much more hype to the release of Q3.

Not every game is going to be upgraded, the developers have to make a “meta quest 3” type of update for the game. Un-upgraded games will just appear slightly more clear and probably run better though!

Even the upgraded games may not be worth playing the whole thing. I might install a couple of my old games that have been upgraded and try them a little, but I suspect a 20% increase in visuals isn't going to make me want to play the whole game again. We need new content. Whoever Meta has had in charge of content development for the past couple of years has really dropped the ball.

People are still playing FF7 to this day after 26 years after release. Mods, new shaders, graphic plugins, keeps people playing it. You think that doesn't apply to VR, you're crazy. EDIT: That said, they should've at least make sure to have one game ready for launch day that utilizes the power of the device.

I’m getting my Q3 this morning. I agree with you, hardware has improved massively the last three years BUT our games library has improved a tiny tiny bit. I think now we are at the point where vr headsets are too powerful for moderns gpu’s and really there’s no point improving headsets beyond this point. We need new games and decent campaign game’s particularly. Sony and Oculus I’m looking at you, give us amazing games!

I totally pre-ordered the Quest 3, but i have a good reason. I own a Quest 1 and basically needed to move on to something else. Having said that, everything i see and hear about the Quest 3 is awesome and think its the right choice for me. Even if there isn't any new games designed for the Quest 3 at launch, you still have new content always coming out like for games such as Beat Saber, Walkabout mini golf and Puzzling Places, just to name a few. I am curious to see how Drop Dead: Dual Strike looks on the Quest 3 also. Thanks for the review of the Quest 3 as I am always learning new things or I at least value many opinions on the Quest 3. So far everyone I have seen review the Quest 3 has liked it and I pre-ordered the 512 GB model and got the elite strap with battery backup and prescription lenses, so I am pretty good to go when i receive the Quest 3 on Wednesday from Amazon.

It's nice to see the PCVR versions of these games like Saints and Sinners looking a lot closer to parity with the standalone native Quest version. Some games like After The Fall had some serious visual cutbacks to the point where the game itself was very impacted.

i got mine. upgraded from q1 so defo big upgrade for me. haven't had much time to play it, so all i've done it set it up and install some games but haven't actually played yet. looking forward to beatsaber (and the tracking working again cause q1 not running as well anymore), zenith, and finally going to get into vrchat. my opinion going from q1 to q3 is that I miss the oled screen. q3 looks good, but I notice the big difference in blacks, colors and contrast and thats without even doing much in it yet. I have really good eyesight, so unfortuneatly I still get the screendoor effect on these and despite the higher resolution it's about the same effect compared to my q1. I'm interested to try gamepass on it too. I know there are several other games I have too but just can't remember off the top of my head. I am also waiting for a holostrap for it. The current strap is a whole lot better than q1, but i still am not a fan (not ever since I got my psvr1 and its band). silicone face insert is also nice

It looks like you need to sinch up the top strap to alleviate the ear issue you're having.. and possibly angle up the side arms up a bit.

I plan to replay Saints and Sinners on the Quest 3 since it seems to look far better, and being able to handle more assets and have more zombies swarming you seems like it would really add to the experience. There are also a few games in my library that I have been waiting to play to experience them with enhanced clarity and performance, like Red Matter and Dead Hook. Also really looking forward to AW2. I have faith that devs will step up in the coming months to give us some solid titles that utilize the Quest 3's improvements!

Nothing on FOV here but if anyone is wondering, both Norm from tested and Tyriel Wood confirmed 110 degrees horizontal FOV via the "What's My FOV" testing tool measurement. Norm went further to explain why and demonstrated how the lenses and LCD panels are actually titled. You can see the lenses are tilted obviously, but the LCD panels are also tilted. The sole purpose of the tilting is to increase FOV as it does introduce some jaggies on perfectly horizontal lines. But I much prefer the increased FOV and hopefully super sampling can mitigate the jaggies on lines.

To answer your question yes I am excited to jump into Microsoft Flight sim 2020 in the quest 3 just because on quest link the grhipcics should be closer to flat screen then my Rift CV1 and it's old 2016 HMDI connection... But your right Meta 100% should have released the quest 3 this time next year when all the softwear and games were ready then it would have an impressive launch line up... Right now it's just a handful up upgdates for in VR and AR games and some to MR... Also no one has mentioned stuff that would make AR and MR more useble ingenral... Like being able to see yourself in VR, Having AR windows, Smartwatch/goggle glass stuff, recording directly from the camaras, panorma photo taking...

I’m always hesitant upgrading from a Rift S to whatever the next system is because of the battery. Sometimes I can play for hours jumping between Elite Dangerous to Beat Saber and maybe Half Life: Alyx or Space Trainer or whatever that game was called. 2 hours of battery life seems short for me. I would be more willing to jump on the Quest 3 if it was maybe around 4 hours

I'm definitely in agreement that Quest3 needs more Mixed Reality experiences to really make it shine and to be worth the upgrade; seems like there's so much potential especially if they can get Parker Bros and other companies to get a development studio to start moving existing board games and card games over into the AR/MR space, and LEGO hopefully doing a lot more with future titles too. Lots of potential for really cool stuff that would get more people to buy it. Also looking forward to the planned Augments feature coming next year.

My main complaints with Quest 1 and 2 are the super low FOV, 'god rays' when looking at bright lights, and how hard it is to keep your eyes in the sweet spot of the lenses. Are any of these things better in Quest 3?

Honestly my biggest concern (and almost no reviewer mentions this) is privacy in releation to Meta as a company, or rather their horrible track record of not having any. This concern is only going to get worse with these high res, in colour, 3D depth mapping cameras that are used for pass-through. Anyone who thinks Meta wouldn't use this hardware for data collection is probably being naive. Honestly, I just don't trust them as a company, and that's the only reason I haven't bought one.

I run a good VPN but I know what you are saying. A VR headset though, it not a necessity like a phone has become. Genuine question... Do you trust Meta? To my mind they have such an awful record of lying, cheating, and stealing... Am I honestly WORRIED what they may do with the information they glean from me? Not in the slightest, st least not at the moment.. If and when headsets get so good that they can digitally map your face, voice and body movements then I'll reevaluate that. Think we're still 3 or 4 generations of headsets away from that however!

I am new to VR but predict it will get a huge boost from the 3, and that new consumer takeup will inspire programmers to write hot new material. I've bought the 512 but it takes 10 days to ship to NZ :( . Initial reports gripe about the lousy band and microphone, but I am guessing Meta have hit it big as a PCVR headset and portal to mixed reality.

Regarding your question on revisiting 'older' games with a graphics bump: while I deeply appreciate enhanced graphics (being a PCVR enthusiast myself), I mostly engage in interactive platforms like Engage, RAUM, Workrooms, and Immersed nowadays. However, I see the charm for newcomers. Those graphical refreshes inject some new energy into classics, enhancing the overall experience. After all, it's about evolving and improving, right? P.S. What I like is that between the Q1 and Q2, this seems like it took back some of the features that were stripped down to make the Q2 cheaper like the IPD adjustment wheel, etc., and brought it back, solving a few problems that came with the Q2. I really don't know why they thought the fixed IPD slots was a good idea. It doesn't have Q1's Oled panels, but in your opinion, does it matter as much now, at least compared to the Q2? Or does the visual clarity and vibrance in colors (and greys) look better compared to Q2?

@@stormscloud cause people need to know that quest 1 players are still active but it’s so broken and almost unplayable on some games even games I had purchased on the quest 1 aren’t compatible anymore, just to show how that happens when you always gotta upgrade to newer headset and it’ll probably happen to the quest 2 in the future or at least the next year

I agree. I got my quest 3 yesterday. I tried first encounters then I put it on the shelf. Cause there is no new games to play! Kinda feel a little foolish for buying it.

Thanks for the early access review! For the headstrap over the ears issue, it looks like you have slack where it connects to the top of the headset. Can you tighten that loop up some and move the strap higher on your head away from your ears?

So hesitant to get this since I just got a Quest 2 and ordered prescription lenses for it Jul 2022 so I have that investment. But I have fomo! Any thoughts on how this is with glasses? Doesn't seem like there's much room in there and I'm scared I'll scratch the lenses.

I’m definitely going to revisit Saints and sinners. I actually never finished that one. I owned it on quest 2 as well as PC (using my quest 2 as the headset). But compared to PC the graphics were terrible on quest 2, and along with a handful of other people I was experiencing the game breaking weight detection issues that made it impossible to aim handguns on the PC version.

The pro controllers are really great but the quest 3 ones are aren't too far behind as they've also got the trutouch haptics for great immersion. But it all comes down to your budget. If you're new to vr I would wait at least 6 months for you to decide if the quest 3 ones are good for you, and even then I would only upgrade if it doesn't affect your budget much. Hope this helps👍

Would the quest pro be better for movies with local dimming or do movies look better with q3 due to res and clarity?

I've used the Quest Pro. There is a weird IPS glow issue on those which really stinks when trying to watch things in dark environments. Basically there is an orangish pinkish hue around the edges of the display that is very noticeable in darker content (such as watching movies). I returned my unit because of it, and from what I could tell it affects all of the Quest Pro units but I could be wrong. From what I've read the Quest 3 doesn't have that problem. For me personally the local dimming would not be worth dealing with that other problem.

Honestly with all the improvements especially the fov and resolution, the stepless ipd is the best for me as ive always had problems getting it right. Ive had to settle for 2.5 on quest 2 which is really annoying to get right. My ipd is 64.5 lol so not the easiest to achieve
