Yeah - Gravity Sketch is great, but I would love to be able to fully use this in Blender, in VR. Since it’s supposed to be native to the Quest AND we’re supposedly also getting a direct Win 11 remote desktop access, I’m hoping maybe it’ll work seamlessly enough to just jump back and forth between Blender’s desktop and VR modes from within the Quest. Then maybe someday we’ll get a dedicated mixed reality Bender addon where we can translate the desktop experience into something like mixed reality tabletop modeling IRL.

I know that it annoys gamers everytime a company drops something for VR thats not gaming focused, but there are some of us who benefit from things like this. Plus, this is probably the last piece of hardware we're (the vr art community) gonna get for 20 years, so dont worry. Now when is this thing gonna be available in canada?

He showed it working in all the ways that I would need it to work. I have friends who were testers of the pen that told me that it worked well for them as well. So i was speaking more to that than this video. My bad for the lack of clarity, i wasnt speaking to this video specifically.

Gamers should be happy to, if for no other reason that this starts to crack open the door to other tracked third party accessories in VR. Tracked gunstocks, golf clubs, gloves, maybe even a koozie for your drink. If I see this on sale, I might get it just to fool around in some art apps, but it doesn't really appeal to me at that price point. However, I am just happy for the people it will help, like you, and what it might mean for the future of the Meta platform, which has moved so far from its Oculus roots, any sign of opening up should be taken as a positive.
@SeageSpeaksАй бұрын
@@IanDeMartino I started out solely creating animations and then taught myself how to do 3d sculpting and now the pipeline in VR, because of VR. But BECAUSE of art, I started to get really curious about what others could create within the space and began gaming, and now I play a ton of games as well and own 3 headsets. Things like this are special, because i feel like its a tool *for* VR, Like the future of it, but a little differently from how you said. For example, the creator of Walkabout Mini Golf, i know he does a chunk of his work on his maps in Gravity Sketch, fully in VR. Tools like these, i feel like would help people like him create more comfortably. I too want to develop and create more experiences for VR from within VR. A lot of the people making VR worth anything are the small indie creators, and many work in unconventional ways, so i see tools like this as a net positive across the board. Plus, a lot of artists cant get used to working with controllers, they want that familiarity of a stylus, so this opens up the door to more experienced flat screen creators beginning to explore the space like I did. I agree with you. If you're already a VR artist or do productivity stuff, then this price is reasonable and fair compared to the $700 pricetag on the old beta, lmfao. Its close to that or regular 1st party digital stylus'. But normal people are gonna look at this and be like...why? But its just like you said. Who knows where people will go next, or what other things meta will take on as first party? This is only the beginning.

We can say that in a few generations. First generation is an expensive beta test. Wouldn’t be the first time that Apple makes a product that only later becomes viable.
@owRekssjfjxjxuurrpqpqssАй бұрын
This is sort of Apple’s approach to all of their modern products so I think it’s a little early to write it off entirely. The Apple Watch and even iPhone both didn’t really blow up until the 3rd and 4th gen when the prices were brought to a reasonable level and in the case of the iPhone, the 3g was when it was finally available on more than one carrier in the US. • The original iPhone was seen as a luxury product for rich people, it was incredibly expensive, did very little and was limited to AT&T • The original Apple Watch was much the same, very little utility at launch and for higher prices than the modern ones. • Remember the first gen iPad? It was truthfully a large iPod touch and that was the main criticism people had towards it but now it’s by far the leader in the tablet marketplace and it’s not really close. I think it is a pretty underwhelming experience at this point and for 3500, not worth it for anyone besides VR app developers, but this is not an unfamiliar trajectory for Apple’s successful long term projects. The only recent Apple product that I think was a hit right out of the gate was AirPods and AirPods Pro and that was partially because they removed the headphone jack and the novelty was easy to appreciate even from an advert unlike Apple Watch and Vision which really need to be used to get the appeal of. Not defending the Vision Pro at this point at all, they need to learn from its many issues for the next few generations if they want it to succeed, I think long term they want to make AR+VR hybrid glasses that are not much bigger than regular glasses and the Vision Pro is more of an early beta for people with a lot of expendable income. The tech is impressive in a lot of ways, the pass through is miles beyond quest 3 and the resolution and color accuracy of the screens are better than any VR headset on the market unless something’s changed in the past few months but their focus on productivity doesn’t really work with VR imo, it would work much better in augmented reality where you don’t feel isolated with tunnel vision and like you’re looking through a screen.

11:23 whoah… how well did it work on that white glass wall? It’s so glossy, seems great for drawing with this but the tracking must be working pretty good too. I would not have expected that to work
@faduciАй бұрын
The glossy wall would only be a problem if the MX ink used cameras itself to detemine its position, as those would only see structureless white or some glare close to the glass. But the pen doesn't do any tracking itself. Instead it has a couple of IR LEDs at the back that the cameras on the Quest can see. From the relative positions of the LED to each other the Quest then calculates the pen's distance plus rotation, the latter aided by rotation data from an IMU sensor inside the pen. So the pen really has neither a clue nor cares where it is or what is in front of it. The Quest knows where exacty in the room itself is, and the pen's position is only calculated relative to the Quest. So it doesn't matter whether the pen points at paper, the wall, white glass, a mirror or thin air, it will work the same as long as it is within the viewing range of the cameras. And consequenty you can't use it to draw blind, e.g. watching a video and quickly trying to sketch what you see without looking at the pen.

Will this be available for Desktop Apps / Meta Link, or will it be only for the much more limited Quest OS?
@faduciАй бұрын
It works only on Quest, because it uses the IR based tracking that is also used to track the Touch controllers. The only way to use it with desktop apps would be streaming those from a PC to the Quest with for example VirtalDesktop. As the MX Ink is compatible to the Touch controllers, its position and buttons will be translated in a similar way, while using extra functionality like pressure sensitivity would require direct software support. So while streaming is a way to use MX Ink with desktop apps through Quest, its not a good or practical one.
@teadrinkАй бұрын
@@faduci I think this pen could be supported in the same way as touch controllers and hand tracking are supported through link; it just runs natively on the Quest and then sent to the PC. However, Meta has chosen to artificially limit the use of hand tracking through Link for it's internal use (it's Unity integration code). So my suspicion is that this would work the same way, effectively making it unavailable for use with a powerful desktop GPU except from within the Unity Editor.

Because it is very hard to get even the heavy, clunky VR HMDs to work with current tech. The Bigscreen Beyond headset is probably more what you expect, a very slim, 128g device. But they only achieved this by leaving everything non-essential out, it needs a PC for rendering, external so called lighthouse bases to track its position, doesn't include speakers and can only be used by one person, because instead of options for adjustment, you get a custom made facepad shaped according to your face, of which you have to provide a 3D scan when ordering. All this is currently necessary to bring down the weight enough, and you'll need to buy extra controllers and lighthouses for about USD 600 in addition to the USD 1000 VR heaset itself. Everybody would love to offer glasses style headsets, and Meta and Apple both already invested literally billions in this. Apple recently postponed their XR glasses indefinitely, because too many issues remain unsolved. The Bigscreen Beyond is about as good as current tech allows, and still requires a lot of compromises.

What about the Stylus work on the Quest Pro? You only mentioned Quest 2 and Quest 3, but then later on you talk about the Quest Pro controllers, but does the stylus work?
@faduciАй бұрын
No, it doesn't. There might be valid technical reasons for this, as the MX Ink relies on the IR LED based controller tracking as it is used on Quest 2, 3, 3S, while the Quest Pro controllers are self tracking. The Touch controller tracking uses the same lowres nIR cameras as the room and hand tracking, which are therefore also present on Quest Pro. The issue may be a different positioning/setup of these cameras, but it is much more likely that Logitech simply didn't want to invest the necessary effort to also support the Quest Pro, which only sold in very low numbers and will be discontinued as a product in December 2024.

They changes that some time ago. You still need a Meta account that isn't connected to your Facebook account, unless you want to, reducing at least some of the excessive tracking. Meta was very careful not to scare away people fearing that a VR headset in their home might become a horribe data hoarding device. Initially Meta therefore didn't collect any usage data, they now collect anonymized data about which apps are used, and annouced and explained that beforehand. And personal data like images for room tracking or eye movement never leaves the headset. They knew that people would distrust them due to endless data privacy violation as Facebook. This and the fact that the VR market is still to small to make personalized ads, for which most of the tracking is used, worth pursuing, probably makes the Meta Quest their most user data privacy respecting consumer offer. No guarantee it will stay that way once XR is more established.

The Apple Vision Pro is a 1.4B failure. You can't mass market a headset without games and sell it for a ridiculous price point. The Quest 2 has sold over 20 million units, you're not catching up to, or surpassing those kinds of numbers. Quest 3 looks nice but if like me you already have a Quest 2... it's not worth the cost to upgrade.

I forgot VR existed, haven't heard anything about it for a couple years... did they make any good apps for it yet, a killer app even? I know HL Alyx was good but that was ages ago
