hahaha, yeah, i admit that i only tested beat saber on the plane at easy and normal settings, which was a mistake. if/when i update this video, i would certainly add the caveat that beat saber DOES work surprisingly well at the easier settings, but it would be a disaster to play on expert+.

Yes, that's definitely true. Fortunately, on all of these flights, I had my girlfriend sitting next me, so she knew what she was getting into. But that's also why it's super important in general to select games that are appropriate for where you're sitting so you don't bother other passengers. For example, Thumper won't disturb anyone -- but Creed is a very bad choice.

I tested this on seven different airplane flights, and I tried sitting in Economy/Main Cabin, Economy Comfort (just extra leg room), Delta Premium Select (extra leg room and a bit of extra width), and Business Class lie-flat. Of course, you're right that some games can only be played in Business Class (which I can't afford personally!), but for most of the games I reviewed, like Moss, Thumper, Angry Birds, Space Pirate Trainer, Tokyo Chronos, and I Expect You to Die, you can play them without any problems even in a normal Economy seat on US airlines. I was surprised too!

One of the keys to VR motion sickness issues is to start with the most comfortable experiences, so that someone doesn't immediately associate VR with feeling sick. So, yeah, Real VR Fishing or Bait are good choices because you don't move, you just sit there and fish -- and not moving in VR avoids motion sickness for me totally. Most of the other games I mentioned also don't have much motion sickness risk because you're stationary: Moss, Space Pirate Trainer, Beat Saber, Angry Birds, I Expect You to Die, and Tokyo Chronos all have no gliding around and didn't make me feel sick at all. The others are a bit more intense, but fine for me, except for Epic Coasters (which made me feel horrible), VR Karts (didn't want to play very long), and Ultrawings (you can control how open your cockpit is to try to mitigate motion sickness), which are the most motion-intensive games I reviewed.

You probably showed him cardboard on a 60 fps phone. Cardboard doesn't have movement support (6dof), and view might be distorted. So if you have a better headset (more fps, better tracking, resolution) show him a vr experience with teleport only. It's possible to still experience motion sickness, but will always be better than cardboard

I got motion sick with a cardboard too. But i got a PSVR and i can play for hours now without any minor inconvience, the higher resolution screen and better tracking really work better, so if you have a quest or PSVR or any other high end vr setup i suggest trying that with your grandpa cause it could be reeeaaally fun, owh and get Richie's plank. It's so fun to watch the reaction of family

I didnt expected that Beatsaber performs so well in the plane. Great review... i use it in the train sometimes..so this also helps me to choose a game next time. Beside Tiltbrush there is also SkulptrVR which is very fun to use sitting.

Great video. Realistically though, unless the people seated immediately around you are friends or family, playing VR games on a plane is at the very least inconsiderate. I have an Oculus Quest and I wouldn’t try this unless maybe I was in a business class single seat pod all to myself.

Yeah, I totally agree that this works best if you're sitting next to a friend as opposed to a stranger. But, that's also why, in the video, I emphasize selecting appropriate games for a plane. Playing Moss, Angry Birds, or Thumper works fine sitting next to a stranger, but you definitely shouldn't play Pistol Whip or Creed. :) I tested about 25 games on 7 different airplane flights, and you're also right that nearly any game (that can play seated and doesn't need roomscale) works fine in lie-flat business class/Delta One, and many games also work better in Economy Comfort/Premium Select, etc. In Main Cabin/Economy, that's where you really need to be careful about which games you choose. Try Deisim! It’s a very relaxing game where you’re basically a God over civilization and you get to create and grow said civilization. It’s also really easy to play in in a small space. You download it through side quest.

Glad to see someone else do this! 'Pinball FX' and 'The Curious Tale Of The Stolen Pets' are good shouts because of their sedentary nature. Juice isn't an issue if you take a suitable battery along. Can also recommend you drag and drop a bunch of movie rips onto your Quest prior to the flight. IMAX in the sky baby!

Cool, I haven't tried either of those -- I'll check them out. Yeah, on my flights I just had the headset plugged into the AC outlet when necessary, but I know many airlines still don't have outlets at all seats. And yeah, I did try watching movies too, which worked fine -- I should have mentioned that! But, yeah, it definitely requires foresight in that you have to load them on the Quest (it's too bad that Netflix/Amazon Prime/etc. don't make it easy to take movies offline on the headset). It would also be nice if it were possible to stream Delta's extensive entertainment content to the headset (which you can already do to a phone or tablet).

yeah, i've only played a handful of angry birds rounds on a phone but i was amazed how long i was able to play it in VR without getting bored. i'm jealous have you have an index -- i haven't tried it yet! as for all the traveling, all the time on the plane is no fun. but getting there is!

figuring out exactly how to rate things was a bit tricky. I did the game star ratings as compared to the world of VR games as a whole. so, for example, pistol whip got 5 stars because it is one of the best VR/rhythm games ever made -- but I'm not comparing it to something like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, because they're just not in the same category. as for the plane ratings, I tried to loosely follow this guide: 5 Planes = Works perfectly 4 Planes = Works well but with a small flaw (immersion reduction, motion sickness, etc.) 3 Planes = Works, but some movements you may need to sit in an economy aisle/window seat with an empty middle seat (or in business class) 2 Planes = Only works if you're in an empty economy row by yourself or in business class 1 Planes = Doesn't work on a plane imperfect, i know.

hahaha, it's not in the video, but i definitely bashed my hand into my girlfriend (who was sitting next to me) a couple times (with I Expect You to Die, Ultrawings, and Job Simulator) and I did (lightly) hit the seat in front of me once when I was testing creed. which is exactly why no one should play Creed on a plane. 😂

Personally I think space pirate trainer would be a 4/5 because you’re arms would be a bit uncomfortable

I think that some of the "plane ratings" were a bit too high. You also have to take into account that for some plane seats, there will be bags, fold out tables, flight attendants with drink/food carts, and people, all around you. This would make playing games like Beat Saber almost unplayable, as I personally would be worried about hitting literally anything around me. Some games just don't work well in a very confined space. However, this really only will be a problem with Combat type games, (like Space Pirate Trainer, Beat Saber, Robo Recall, etc.) as you have to move your arms around a lot. Games like Moss, however, work well, as you just have to point and click to interact with things. But hey, that's just my opinion.

yeah, beat saber is worse on hard/expert, which i should have mentioned, though it did work okay in an economy seat on easy/normal for me. but yeah, robo recall doesn't really work except in business class

To be honest, I would’ve put beat saber as a 2 plane rating. Because to score better points you need to swing wider and more precisely. As well as having to move left and right and is much preferred playing standing up.

lol yeah, i admit that i only tested beat saber on the plane at easy and normal settings, which was a mistake. if/when i update this video, i would certainly add the caveat that beat saber DOES work surprisingly well at the easier settings, but it would be a disaster to play on expert+.

admittedly, i only tested beat saber at easy/normal settings, and i also didn't play space pirate trainer for many hours, but only for about 20 minutes. for the 20 minutes i played space pirate trainer, it worked totally fine in my seat, but i suspect that as it gets more difficult, its plane rating would go down if/when i update this video, i'll try to adjust plane ratings to take into account more difficult and longer play times.

I have to disagree with Beat Saber, having been a Quest user for little under a week now, and Beat Saber being my main game, it definitely requires far more movement than a plane seat would provide - I can see you're playing it on no arrows, so that would ease it up movement. I'd give that lowest plane rating due to the length of time you can play before you literally can't. - Amazing video none the less Hank, gained a sub from me!
