Interesting insights. For the weight gain case studies, you can find small sample sizes in many of the online keto groups who experiment with high calorie low carb diets to show how hard it is to gain weight even 5000cal/day. Many of them gained little to no weight after 1-4 weeks, and some even lost weight. Many found they would have gym gains of muscle and smaller waist to hip ratio. I have never been able to do it, it's just too much food!

Loved this! ❤ Thank you, Dr. B for another great presentation. I think this one maybe one of my favorites because it really drives home that fat cells cannot grow without insulin! We know through chem that everything, including protein will trigger insulin, but it is the lowest trigger along with some dairy- so the key for someone who is insulin resistant would be go carnivore! ❤
@yoso5859 ай бұрын
Yes, but that doesn’t by any means mean that fat is a freebie. If fat is over consumed, it will happily hang around until that insulin is raised. And it doesn’t take much.

My question as well….
@rollingstone30177 ай бұрын
I would LOVE to see that hypercaloric study!! I read and follow many, many doctors that are influencers in both camps -- LCHF and HCLF. The HCLF people claim you can't get fat on high carbs in the absence of dietary fat. One of them uses the mantra "the fat you eat is the fat you wear". I find that absurd and does not comport with my experience at all. On the other hand, the LCHF docs (like Dr. Bickman here) seems to be claiming I will not get fatter if I cut out the carbs. Again, not my experience.
@nataliajimenez18706 ай бұрын
Bickman doesn't claim that. He frequently mentions that energy restriction is an important step for weight loss, but first it's important to lower the insulin by limiting carbs so the brain hunger signals are controlled and then you can consume less energy (through time restricted eating) without the brain sabotaging your efforts. The usual problem of classic calorie restriction is that the person has to battle against their hunger signals and hunger will eventually win and people gain their weight back plus more because extreme caloric restriction also lowers metabolic rate. I love Dr Jason Fung's work regarding this. A way to reduce calories without having a collapse of the metabolic rate is to fast intermittently (like twice a week), so the body doesn't adjust to an overall smaller amount of calories. Also fats and protein with few carbs are more satiating, making the person eat fewer calories (but still you have to be careful with liquid fats like cream because those are easier to overeat. Dr Atkins advocated being careful with added fats and cheese, but being more liberal with fatty meat and eggs)

@hektor67669 ай бұрын
Sure, it's simplified, but a membrane under stress is vulnerable to rupture, insertion of additional phospholipid molecules to expand the cell wall is problematic as is hyperplaisia, and it is much easier and more efficient for the cell to signal stress by releasing leptin and adiponectin in an effort to somatically lower insulin and promote glucagon..
