Metabones Speed Booster adapters include a lens element that refocuses full frame lens information onto the smaller APS-C sensor area while adapting lens mounts. Additionally non-Speed Booster adapters change mounts and offer additional controls.

My Metabones EF to RF Speedbooster still has a crop factor of 1.136X (instead of 1.6X). The lens is very noticeably brighter, and the IQ is slightly better than if I just used a normal adapter. Depth of field remains the same. The reason for the better IQ is akin to increasing the image size through interpolation, and then shrinking the image back down to print size.

Thanks for answering Andrew's question. I was wondering the same thing. It would be nice to have one for people who don't need to adapt different types of lenses but just want to negate the crop factor for their dslr.

kuunami Yes, this. Negate the crop factor and gain an extra stop into the bargain. SWEET. What happens to lenses that are labelled as "specifically designed for APS-C", I do not know - I had always assumed that they would behave just as their focal length implied, but you never know.

The problem with Metabones is that they are not very customer friendly. You can't call them on the phone to ask questions about their products. They require that you email them. I've sent 3 emails over a month period and still have not received a reply. If they don't respond to pre-sales questions, imagine how difficult it would be to get support. This doesn't make me feel too comfortable spending this kind of money with a company like this. All I wanted to do was confirm which model works with my specific lens. No reply at all.

I've spent nearly USD 500 in the Metabones Speedboster and I have to say I could have saved that money. It works well only from f / 1: 4 to f/ 1:11. At f / 1: 2 or less to f / 1: 1.4 only works well in the center of the image. At the sides and corners is very, very soft and provides chromatic aberrations. The extra stop is useless and is better to spend that money on a good native lens. I am outraged that Brian Caldwell told me that the problem is the lens Canon FD 50mm f / 1: 1.4. It is incredible .....

I purchased the Metabones Canon EF/ Micro 4/3 Speed Booster XL-BL from B&H Photo in April of 2016. My application was using the Panasonic GH-4 and the Speed Booster with the many Canon lenses I had accumulated. The unit worked well most of the time, but the GH-4 would occasionally show the “Lens attachment failed” error screen when I attached a different lens. I thought it was the lens choice, but noticed that all but one of the lenses I had were Canon EF units. On 09/29/2016 the GH-4 firmware was updated to version V25 and the Speed Booster interface problem began to occur much more frequently. I continued to think it may have been due to my inexperience with the GH-4 camera functions, so I tried to learn about and attempt almost every combination of camera and lens settings. Nothing worked. On 12/07/2016 the Speed Booster firmware was updated to version V2.5, and on 12/08/2016 the GH-4 firmware was again updated to version V26. Now EVERY lens I try to attach gives the same attachment failure error message. I can only use the combination if I place the lens inside the Speed Booster mount but only turn enough to secure it without actually connecting the contacts of the lens and the Speed Booster. Of course this won’t allow any lens communication with the camera, but will still allow the use of the lens as a completely manual unit. I have tried both the Green Power-Save mode (default) and the Advanced Manual Focus mode on the Speed Booster and I still get the same results. I find it almost unbearable that I purchased this unit mainly for the ability to use my Canon lenses on the GH-4 like I use them on my Canon bodies, i.e. with full control of the lens focus functions. I can’t believe a $650 unit designed to do this, heralded as the best unit of its type available in the marketplace, only lasted for a few months before failing completely. Of course I am beyond the 30 day period usually given for a return window. I could never give this unit more than one star, and would seriously love to give it much less than one star, if that were possible. I have never been as disappointed with a seemingly serious photography product as I have been with this Metabones unit.

UPDATE: I obtained the information I needed to possibly get the unit repaired on 12/27/2016 and sent the Speed Booster to Hong Kong for repair (as is required by Metabones). I was required to pay the cost to ship there and back, along with any other custom fees for international shipping. I had no claim number and no guarantee that the repair will be accepted as a warranty covered item. I received the “repaired” Metabones Speed Booster back from Hong Kong on Monday (01/16/2017) along with the return documents. The unit was unpacked, removed from the plastic storage container, and immediately mounted on my Panasonic GH4 camera body. I then attempted to mount three Canon lenses in succession on the adapter- (EF 17-40mm f/4L, EF 24-105mm f/4L, and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L). Each lens I mounted failed any identification and acceptance by the GH4 camera. In other words, the Metabones unit was acting the same as before the repair process. I then decided to eliminate any possibility that my camera body was at fault by arranging a test protocol with a local camera dealer here in town. I took the Metabones Speed Booster, along with my camera bodies and lenses, to the camera shop for bench testing. When I arrived and discussed the issue with the store owner, he suggested I first attempt to mount the Speed Booster on two new camera bodies and witness the results before any bench testing was done. We mounted the Metabones unit on a new Olympus E-M1 Mark II camera body, attached an EF lens, and turned the camera on. The Olympus camera failed to accept or even recognize the lens and would not allow light to pass through the Speed Booster, and into the camera. We then tried two other Canon lenses, only to get the same results. Next we unboxed a brand new Panasonic GH4 body and tried the same procedure, only to get the “lens attachment failure” screen each time a lens was attached to the Speed Booster. At this point we were convinced the problem was the Speed Booster. My cost to send the unit to Hong Kong and back for repair was over $60. This means I’ve spent over $700 for a unit that does not work, even after an attempted repair. I can’t tell you how demoralizing this is.

2nd UPDATE: I have been corresponding with B&H Photo continuously during this ordeal and have understood their position regarding the return window. I will update when the replacement unit arrives and the functionality is verified.

FINAL UPDATE: I received the replacement Metabones Speed Booster from B&H Photo today as promised. Of course I was anxious to mount the adapter on my GH4 camera body and start the testing, and that’s exactly what I did. The adapter was initially mounted on the camera body and the camera was turned on. The first lens I mounted was the EF 17-40mm f/4L and immediately the mount worked. The GH4 accepted the lens and was fast and accurate in processing focus info from lens to camera to lens. The Speed Booster and lens combo also resulted in an apparent 1.5 stop increase in the lens aperture, allowing me to shoot 4K video inside my home office under relatively low light (1 small lamp) at 1600 ISO and get excellent perfectly usable footage. Next I mounted the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L mainly to test the autofocus accuracy and the GH4 / EF lens response speed. The combination worked flawlessly with fast accurate focusing even in that low-light situation. I dare say even new Lumix lenses equipped with internal memory of bokeh files to use with the GH4’s new DFD focusing technology would, at best, produce only minimal increase in this focusing speed. This is, of course, what makes all the hassle I went through worth it.

When using a Nikon 35mm full frame lens on an Fuji X-T30 along with a Metabones Nikon F-Mount G Lens to Fujifilm X-Mount Camera Speed Booster ULTRA, B&H # MESPNFGXBM2, the equivalent angle of view would be closer to 37.2mm with the increase in the maximum aperture by 1 stop.

It's an awesome product, HOWEVER: They only have products for cross-platforms. There is myriads of photographers who use APS-C censor cameras, but suffer when it comes to wide-angle lenses because of the crop factor. Metabones should produce Nikon-Nikon and Canon-Canon products so that APS_C consor camera owners can enjoy the wide-angle experience with the added f-stop bonus. I would certainly buy one !

That's impossible at the moment. The flange distance (mount to sensor) are too great to put a chunk of glass in between. Nikon has the largest flange distance making the most unlikely in the bunch. Canon not too far behind. The NEX and M4/3 system works because it lacks the mirror housing DSLR's are burden with. Have you noticed that NEX/M4/3 Lenses are right up against the sensor? Without the mirror, all that spare room allows third parties like metabones to make mounts for lenses that are designed for SLR flange distances. So yeah... Have a Nice Day! :D

Hi, am I right in thinking that because the apature is smaller when you use a normal lens on a crop sensor that a speed booster would just restore the apature and focal length to what is stated for that lens on a full frame sensor?
@BandH

Callan Panes Sensor size will not have an effect on the lens's aperture, as sensor size does not affect exposure. So, using a lens on a Speed Booster, you will be getting an extra stop of light, not simply restoring the lens's aperture. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

I really need the 16mm and probably will buy the 35 f2 or 50 f2 initially. Will the Speedbooster let me use these and other Fuji lenses on the x2. If so, will I lose any functionality between the lenses and the camera due to using the adapter?

If the lenses you already own are designed for the Fujifilm X-mount lens mount, then you would not be able to use a Speed Booster with your Fujifilm X-mount lenses. The Speed Booster adapters are designed to connect third-party or different brand lens(es) onto your camera's lens mount. At this time, the only Speed Boosters available for the Fujifilm X-mount is to attach Alpa, Canon FD, Contarex, Contax/Yashica, Leica R, Minolta MD, Nikon, Olympus OM, or Sony A-mount/Minolta MAXXUM lenses onto the Fujifilm X-mount. If you find one of these lenses in the focal length you wish to use, you may then use them with the correct Speed Booster for your usage needs, but as your Fujiflm X-mount lenses are already designed for the X-mount, no adapter is needed to connect your lenses to the Fujifilm X-T2 Mirrorless Digital Camera, and no Speed Boosters made for the native Fujifilm X-mount lenses.

There are adapters that would enable one to mount Nikon F-mount lenses onto a Fujifilm X-E2. Their adapters should be compatible with both pre-AI and Ai Nikon lenses, as well as the AF lenses. You would need a different adapter for Pentax lenses, though, as Pentax lenses do not have the Nikon F-mount. Pentax has had several different mounts, so which adapter to go with would depend on the mount of your Pentax lenses. *Christina* AskKZbin@bhphoto.com bhpho.to/2fojsWa

Great video, :-) I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I just got a GH4 from B&H for mainly video use, now i don't own ANY glass at all. So the two options I'm looking at is either getting the Metabones Speed Booster along with the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS Lens, Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 which would cost a total of $2,076 OR i could go with MFT lenses, the Voigtlander 10.5 f/0.95, Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 and the Voigtlander Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95. Assuming the 10.5 Voigtlander will cost at least $999, that would make the MFT lenses come to $2,998. That is $900 more than the Speedbooster and the 3 EF lenses. Which option would you go for ?? Would you advise the speed booster for someone who doesn't have any lenses or would you suggest getting Voigtlander glass which even with the speed boosters help, none of those EF lenses i listed will drop to 0.95 like the MFT lenses. Your advice would be really appreciated, thank you.

Lens adapters are great, especially if like myself, you have years of Nikkor and Leica M lenses. They are not without their draw backs and if given the opportunity to begin again, I would opt for lenses designed to work on the camera system of my choice and not adapt lenses from other systems. >Chuck< askbh@bandh.com

If you don't already have lenses, I would go with micro four third mount lenses over using an adapter. When at all possible, I do suggest using lenses that have the camera's native mount: one less part to worry about. Also, the Voigtlander lenses you are looking at have de-clicked apertures, which make them a better option for video than the EF mount lenses you were looking at using (de-clicked apertures allow for smoother transitions when changing the aperture to adjust exposure). *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

when you convert full frame lens specs to apsc, you have to multiply the focal lenth AND the aperture by the crop factor each. you don't "gain" a stop of light over the full frame equivalent using a speedbooster. you "gain" whatever you would have with the full frame to begin with on your apsc just like with the focal length. just saying.

I don't agree that these change the aperture to a number lower than the lens says. When you have a full frame lens unadapted on an ASPC body the crop should be factored into the aperture. So a 50mm 1.8 on my D7100 is really at 2.7 when I shoot wide open. When the speed booster eliminates the crop it really just makes use of the entire aperture.

+John Randolph Pamatmat - The Ultra adapters from Metabones are Speed Boosters. Beyond just adapting the lens, they would also increase the angle of view and give you an extra stop of light. A Metabones Speed Booster is designed to connect a DSLR camera lens to a mirrorless digital camera body. While you do not state for which camera the Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens you own is designed to connect, the 16-300mm lens is only manufactured for DSLR cameras. There is not a speed booster designed to connect a DSLR lens to a DSLR camera. While there are a few lens adapters that will allow you to adapt a lens from another manufacturer designed for a different lens mount onto your Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, you would not have any speed boost benefits with this setup.

When mounting a full frame Nikon lens onto a full frame E-mount camera such as the a7, you would need to shoot in APS-C size mode when using the Speed Boosters. The Speed Boosters decrease the size of the lens's image circle, so it would no longer cover the full frame E-mount sensor. If you will be using full frame E-mount cameras, you would need to go with one of the regular adapters, such as the Metabones Nikon F Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera T Adapter II. That adapter would enable you to use full frame Nikon cameras on the a7 without needing to shoot in the crop sensor mode. *Christina* AskKZbin@bhphoto.com bhpho.to/1LtQLxE

The only thing I just learned is my Camera Company Knows how to make a Lens for APSC camera that can give me the field of view of a full frame 35mm. I guess in two years those will be the hot new Lenses on the market ..

fupayme2000 You are talking gibberish " my Camera Company Knows how to make a Lens for APSC camera that can give me the field of view of a full frame 35mm" Your statement doesn't even make sense, since the sensor size is cropped it will result in a longer focal length. That is why many small sensor camera list their 35mm equivalent, which is what I assume you'll do. It's a labeling/marketing thing only. You are not doing anything special... even if their is some grain of truth to your statement (which I highly doubt).

Hi, I want to use a Sony A7RII with a Metabones adapter for Nikon lenses (24-70 f2.8) (70-200 f 2.8) someone can tell me which version is better and more reliable. Thanks for your help.

You may use the Metabones Nikon G Lens to Sony NEX Camera Lens Mount Adapter (Matte Black) B&H # MENFGEBM1 in this case. The aperture control is done directly on the adapter and there will only be manual focus.

If you have a Sigma 17-70mm lens for your Canon 40D, it would not be possible to adapt that for the Nikon D7000. Unfortunately, B&H does not carry, nor am I aware of, an adapter that will allow one to mount a lens with the Canon EOS mount onto a Nikon DSLR. The issue is that the Canon mount is much shorter than the Nikon mount, so a Canon mount lens would need to sit inside the Nikon body to be the correct distance from the camera?s sensor. *Christina*

Can someone tell me the dimensions (mainly the thickness) of the Canon EF Lens adapter to Sony 7R (Mark IV). Thanks
@BandH
@BandH 10 жыл бұрын
As the Metabones Lens Adapters will allow your Canon EF lenses to retain focus at infinity on a Sony E-mount camera, the adapters must be 26mm thick. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

Does "focus at infinity" means retaining auto focus of my canon 50mm 1.4f on a Sony 7R body ?
@BandH
@BandH 10 жыл бұрын
Dimitris Mytas With both the Metabones III and IV Canon EF to Sony NEX adapters, electronic communication will be retained with Canon-branded lenses introduced in or after 2006, so you would retain autofocus with these lenses. Though, that was not what was meant by retaining focus at infinity. For each mount, their lenses are designed to sit a certain distance from the sensor or film plane. The Metabones adapters are designed so that the Canon lenses will maintain the correct distance to the Sony sensor, even though the camera has a shorter register. The difference in the registers between the Canon and Sony mounts is 26mm, so that is how thick the adapters need to be. If they weren?t exactly that size there would be various issues, one of which would be the inability of the lens to focus on objects in the distance (retain focus at infinity). *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

The Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Lens Mount Adapter Mark IV, B&H # MEMBEFEBM4, would be the correct Metabones adapter for your needs. As indicated, the Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Lens Mount Adapter Mark IV is a Smart Adapter which retains electronic communication, is powered by the camera body, and autoexposure, autofocus, EXIF, and stabilization are all supported with the use of this adapter. It is compatible with Canon-brand lenses released on/after 2006.

B and H I bought one of these from your online store and it's garbage (not your fault). I bought the EF to E-mount mk IV to use with my a7S and existing Canon lenses. I have had nothing but problems with it since I got it. I've sent it back to Metabones twice and I still have the same issue. It loses connection with the lens often and sometimes it simply refuses to work. I hate being on a shoot and having to resort to the Sony kit lens to get a shot. I wish Metabones made better quality products. The reviews for this product online are VERY misleading.

oh my he is so wrong... you can't get mere gain light than the lens take in. It's because he don't get crop factor includes F-stop. The lens with speedbooster becomes about the same as it would be on full frame nothing more - no magic. The light the speedbooster get's is the light he forget to calculate in his crop factor. The F/2.8 lens was in fact a F/4.48 on the crop sensor, with speedbooster it became almost, not quiet but almost a F/2.8 again. B and H should really learn what they are talking about, before making these videos.

Will the Metabones N/F - E mount control the aperture on a Sony a7rM2 using a AF-S Nikkor ?
@BandH
@BandH 5 жыл бұрын
No, but this one will: Make full use of your range of lenses on your mirrorless camera with this FUSION Smart Mark II Adapter from FotodioX. This smart adapter allows you to use Nikon F-mount lenses on Sony E-mount bodies, and is designed to retain full electronic communication whenever possible. Fast autofocus can be achieved when using AF-S/AF-I lenses on a camera with phase-detection AF, such as the Sony Alpha a6300, a6500, a7 II, a7R II, and a9. Vibration reduction and EXIF data transmission are also maintained on compatible models that offer those features. As for on-camera aperture control, the adapter supports EMD and pull-rod aperture systems including G-type, E-type, and some D-type lenses. bhpho.to/2lUPbnp >Mark
