A very nice video! Thank you for sharing. My husbad and I picked up this hobby because we both love the civil war and the history behind the wars and the people that where apart of the wars, and well where still learning of our history.

Thank you Ondine. I’m also trying a new technique to request permissions via social media platforms. I’ll be doing a video on that soon! So far though it has yielded several new permissions. Send me an email at thehistorydigger@gmail.com and I’ll send you an example if you want.

Awesome tips! The trust building is really where I think the permissions come from. If you can build a "friendship" with the homeowner quickly, it really can help out! Even if you get a no, don't forget to be friendly, you just never know when they'll talk to their neighbors about you next!

I find that the largest obstacle to overcome is the property owners concern regarding liability of the person(s) detecting on their property. In today's highly litigious society, many are concerned about potential personal liability/ injury claims that could happen while on their property. Also its tough in these days to get a homeowner to sign anything without first wanting to have a legal interpretation/opinion. Just my experience. Cheers!

Wow, this was great! It's true what you say about houses that don't look as old as they are. One of our relatives has a home that was built in 1910; but it's been updated a lot and doesn't look like it's 110 years old at all. It would be really interesting to have some detecting done there.

Thank you so much for this upload I've been metal detecting now for 4 months maybe found my First colonial copper just last week I found a dropped two ringer bullet and about five buttons and some other odds and ends I'm in Tippecanoe county Indiana I need more coils on the ground LOL trying to get a lot of farm permissions not as easy as it looks. But my car needs an alignment so I don't really have wheels right now at the moment. God bless you for the upload and the information! Let me know if you're ever in Indiana battleground Tippecanoe county look that up it is amazing

There are some very valuable tips in this video. Thank you for the walk through the maps online. I am your 35th LIKE on this video. 😁👍🏻 I have asked a few officials about permission for any public space in their county. Not everyone was receptive, they are ALWAYS worried about liability issues of all things. Clearly, people who do not understand the hobby. I hope to change some of their minds. I really need a logo for my channel. Yours looks great on your hat and I understand how that could make a difference. Problem is for me that I have yet to see a logo for my channel that grabs me as if to say, “That’s it!”. Sigh.....maybe this year one will be revealed to me. 😁

Great video, and I perked up when I heard you say Okonomowoc. I've actually traveled there for work a few times. One time it was so cold, I swear my jeans froze just walking from the hotel door to my rental car! In any case, great video... loved the interactions with the "locals". Maybe it should be renamed OZconomowoc ;-) Since you're a local, you probably know, but I had a security guard tell me a "story" of why it's called Okonomowoc.

Thanks for the great info. I'm interested in becoming a "detectorist" and was wondering if a property owner has ever asked you to indemnify them in case you somehow got injured on their property? Edit: just visited your web site. I see on the permission form for a business you offer indemnity right off the bat.

I'm like NEW new to the hobby so just kinda been watching things and getting my barring on this stuff, mainly i will probably just stick with areas that are open first before i start doing any knocking or asking per say, i have however been presented a possible an opportunity to search an old civil war fort since the care taker of the property hasn't been able to get anyone else out there to detect the property, if all goes well one of my first out of personal property searches may turn out to be a big one, so pray for me their if ya will lol

Question once you ask permission what you find is it yours or the owner's property?
@TheHistoryDigger1
@TheHistoryDigger1 2 жыл бұрын
That’s completely up to you as how you position this. I normally say I’m happy to split the the finds with them or they’re welcome to keep anything of high value. Others like to keep it all. My feeling is that it’s their property. It’s up to them. When I do this I also find that it often results in referrals to other permissions.

I have found dozens of “ historic homes” near where I live in Ohio. I just watched a video where the guy said if it’s a “historic” home you give everything to the homeowner. Your thoughts on this? And what about sending a letter to the homeowner ahead of a visit ?
@TheHistoryDigger1
@TheHistoryDigger1 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! See my later video “How to Use Social Media to Secure Permissions”. In that I also talk about a letter/mailer I’ve used and had great success with. On permissions I also offer to share my findings w the property owner. Most let me keep it all or pick a few items. Just how I roll, others feel differently. I also offer to make a free video of the hunt where I tell a bit about the property.

I totally agree that “recover” is more palatable but it’s still important the homeowner knows you will be digging. Sure, this isn’t a medical procedure but the idea of truly Informed Consent is still valid.

so.. am I aloud to detect on public parks? Or do I need to get a permit for that?
@TheHistoryDigger1
@TheHistoryDigger1 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the location. State parks are almost always no, county parks most often yes, same with city parks. It depends on the state and specific area. You can call your local police dept and ask if permissible or check with local park and rec or on the county/province web site. Some require fees and permits, most do not.
