68 yrs old working full time and starting a new hobby. My wife and i got a $150 harbor freight detector for $40 and played with it in the yard. Short story long our Vanquish 540 will be here tomorrow lol. If we never find an expensive find our gold will be the time we spend together. Thankyou for the help.

I purchased a mid priced Fisher last summer, and practiced with it in my own yard and a neighbor's yard. I have gained some confidence with it, but still have a lot more area to search in my own yard. So will probably finish that before venturing elsewhere. The weather is getting better now up here in New England, so can't wait to get back out there. I am retired, so have plenty of time. My best find so far has been a vintage sterling silver heart shaped pendant. I also found an old piece of lead shaped like a padlock, but it is not a padlock. Maybe it is some kind of old weight? I haven't found any old coins yet - just a few copper and zinc Lincoln pennies. And yeah, have found a lot of junk - old nails, screws, foil, wire - all kinds of junk. But i separate and save all metals in buckets. At some point, will recycle the junk metals. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have picked up a few valuable tips in using the device better and digging the plugs. I was digging out the entire circles, and putting them back. I like your idea of leaving like a hinge. I have a cheaper pin pointer that does work, but will probably upgrade everything to something better at some point. Thanks again, and happy hunting my new friend! New sub here!

Great video, Mark! I’ve been detecting less than a year and have had trouble at times pinpointing with my detector. I’m going to try your method. Instead of a towel, I use a heavy plastic empty bag to put any extra dirt from plugs on. I think the dirt slides off the plastic easier than a towel.

Well done Mark, loads of good info for newbies. If I'm detecting on a nice lawn I use a frisbee that I cut a pour spout into to put extra dirt in instead of a towel. You can pick the frisbee up and use the pinpointer on it if needed!

Mark, great video for beginners. You nailed it all!! Thank you. Just a minute on the Land Ranger Pro. I own it and love it. I've been detecting for about 5 years now. I got the LRP as a Christmas gift. I immediately went out Christmas Day and found a 58 silver quarter with a plastic shovel and no pinpointer LOL. I thought, "this is going to be a walk in the park" well, reality has set in and it was not all that easy, but i have found literally bags and bags of coins with the LRP. The only bummer is the fact that the buttons just stop working, I sent it back to First Texas twice to have the head and membrane replaced, twice in 3 seasons (the first time it was worse than when I sent it off) it has failed again within the first month.or two of replacement. I have since moved on to the Xterra Pro and Equinox 800. But I still LOVE the LRP a lot, is darn near correct on its target every time! And they are about half the price ($129) then when I got mine for. I just wish support would have treated me right. Thanks again for an excellent video, which I will share with my metal detecting newbie friends. Happy digging.

After watching your video, I was left with a question: If you receive permission to hunt on a farmer's land and you find a $20 gold coin that could be worth a significant amount, who does it belong to? Does it belong to the farmer, to you, or should you split it?

Great question. It depends on the deal you make with the land owner. Generally finders keepers .

I had one of the old original Time Ranger Bounty Hunter detectors, I had nothing but problems with it. I bought an old used Whites Eagle Spectrum after the Bounty Hunter. That Whites was an awesome detector, way better than the Time Ranger.

Great video, Mark. Very informative. Just bought my first detector, primarily to locate rebar property markers. So my first question is do you have any specific recommendations (sensitivity settings, type of material, etc.) on how best to locate those? Also, will you elaborate on the numerical values that show on the display? Does that correlate to the type of material (e.g., a bottle cap v a coin)? And lastly, I do not have a separate pinpoint device (in fact, I did not know such a device even existed until I watched your video), but my detector (like yours) has a built in PP mode. Can I use that to basically do what you do with the handheld device? In advance, thanks. Mark Allen

So on the first question property markers sometimes can be buried at different depths so sensitivity should be set as high as you can as long as it is stable. Not sure what machine you use but I would get a piece of rebar drive it in the ground and practice with that. As far as the pinpoint function on the machine it will help you locate the position of the target but a hand held pointer will speed your process up tremendously after you dig your plug. Hope this helps

On permission property do you always say you will share the finds with the owner? I guess it is implicit when they give permission that anything you find is theirs? Or do you say explicitly that I'll keep what I find? Maybe it just depends on what you are looking for?

I Do not offer anything unless it is a Direct link to the family or property. I do however give gifts to the landowner if possible or ask for them to join. If they ask for a item I typically will give them it .

Has Bounty Hunter gotten better in the last 4-5 years? Because we bought 2 about 5 years ago and both quit working in about 3 months, we only got to use them twice. I tried to file for warranty but got no response after 3 tries!!

Ok I have a newbie question that you may not get every day. I am a very petite woman. I can't lift much, especially for a long period of time. The detector (and shovel) would need to be very light weight. A secondary question, is that the soil up here (my property), I can't even stand on my shovel and jump up and down, and get the shovel to even move. It won't even cut into the grass. So I don't know how I would get a hole started. I have to get a man to help me plant flowers/shrubs/roses. I'm way up north, I think it's the cold winters. But on the up note, my house and property is 1856 and it would be a lot of fun to detect. I have a guess the strength required might be why not many women get into this hobby.

I use the Root Slayer nomad it’s a pretty light shovel and works well! A ton of women are getting into the hobby! As far as detectors my friends over at Bounty Hunter makes a ton of entry level machines that are easy to use and light as well. I use the Time Ranger Pro for relics and the Land Ranger Pro for coin hunting. I hope that helps!! I also have some videos on getting started!

Hey Mark . . . I've noted that the detector we use 'sounds off when we touch the ground with it" this makes it really confusing. What can we do about it? It's a Miyay Metal Detector

Hi! It could be several things but make sure all your connections are tight and the coil wire is secure to the shaft. I’m not familiar with that particular machine but often the China cheapo machines are faulty so you very likely have a bad one. Also try lowering the sensitivity. Some machines have a ground balance feature that helps with falsing. Hope this helps.

I don't see a Ground Balance adjustment on it, but it does have a 'Disc' word on it--- Discovery Mode? I'll have to read up. Thanks again!

BEFORE HAVING TO DIG ,HOW CAN YOU TELL HOW BIG THE TARGET IS?

That’s a great question. You can use you’re detector to see how big a target is by using a X pattern after locating the target. Swing in one direction, turn 180 on the target and swing again. Note where the signal starts and stops and that should give you a idea on size of the object

Discrimination is where you can block out a target range, Notch is where you can block out a specific tone or vdi. I never discriminate or block out anything

The Land Ranger Pro is I would say a intermediate detector but pretty was to learn. The F44 is also a great machine!

None of them are completely waterproof unfortunately but the search coil is. The Time Ranger pro is pretty solid on the beach fresh or salt. Wet salt can sometimes cause some issues sometimes.
