68 yrs old working full time and starting a new hobby. My wife and i got a $150 harbor freight detector for $40 and played with it in the yard. Short story long our Vanquish 540 will be here tomorrow lol. If we never find an expensive find our gold will be the time we spend together. Thankyou for the help.

(thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn

I purchased a mid priced Fisher last summer, and practiced with it in my own yard and a neighbor's yard. I have gained some confidence with it, but still have a lot more area to search in my own yard. So will probably finish that before venturing elsewhere. The weather is getting better now up here in New England, so can't wait to get back out there. I am retired, so have plenty of time. My best find so far has been a vintage sterling silver heart shaped pendant. I also found an old piece of lead shaped like a padlock, but it is not a padlock. Maybe it is some kind of old weight? I haven't found any old coins yet - just a few copper and zinc Lincoln pennies. And yeah, have found a lot of junk - old nails, screws, foil, wire - all kinds of junk. But i separate and save all metals in buckets. At some point, will recycle the junk metals. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have picked up a few valuable tips in using the device better and digging the plugs. I was digging out the entire circles, and putting them back. I like your idea of leaving like a hinge. I have a cheaper pin pointer that does work, but will probably upgrade everything to something better at some point. Thanks again, and happy hunting my new friend! New sub here!

I had one of the old original Time Ranger Bounty Hunter detectors, I had nothing but problems with it. I bought an old used Whites Eagle Spectrum after the Bounty Hunter. That Whites was an awesome detector, way better than the Time Ranger.

Has Bounty Hunter gotten better in the last 4-5 years? Because we bought 2 about 5 years ago and both quit working in about 3 months, we only got to use them twice. I tried to file for warranty but got no response after 3 tries!!

Ok I have a newbie question that you may not get every day. I am a very petite woman. I can't lift much, especially for a long period of time. The detector (and shovel) would need to be very light weight. A secondary question, is that the soil up here (my property), I can't even stand on my shovel and jump up and down, and get the shovel to even move. It won't even cut into the grass. So I don't know how I would get a hole started. I have to get a man to help me plant flowers/shrubs/roses. I'm way up north, I think it's the cold winters. But on the up note, my house and property is 1856 and it would be a lot of fun to detect. I have a guess the strength required might be why not many women get into this hobby.

I use the Root Slayer nomad it’s a pretty light shovel and works well! A ton of women are getting into the hobby! As far as detectors my friends over at Bounty Hunter makes a ton of entry level machines that are easy to use and light as well. I use the Time Ranger Pro for relics and the Land Ranger Pro for coin hunting. I hope that helps!! I also have some videos on getting started!

Great video, Mark. Very informative. Just bought my first detector, primarily to locate rebar property markers. So my first question is do you have any specific recommendations (sensitivity settings, type of material, etc.) on how best to locate those? Also, will you elaborate on the numerical values that show on the display? Does that correlate to the type of material (e.g., a bottle cap v a coin)? And lastly, I do not have a separate pinpoint device (in fact, I did not know such a device even existed until I watched your video), but my detector (like yours) has a built in PP mode. So on the first question property markers sometimes can be buried at different depths so sensitivity should be set as high as you can as long as it is stable. Not sure what machine you use but I would get a piece of rebar drive it in the ground and practice with that. As far as the pinpoint function on the machine it will help you locate the position of the target but a hand held pointer will speed your process up tremendously after you dig your plug. That’s a great question. You can use you’re detector to see how big a target is by using a X pattern after locating the target. Swing in one direction, turn 180 on the target and swing again. Note where the signal starts and stops and that should give you a idea on size of the object

Hi! It could be several things but make sure all your connections are tight and the coil wire is secure to the shaft. I’m not familiar with that particular machine but often the China cheapo machines are faulty so you very likely have a bad one. Also try lowering the sensitivity. Some machines have a ground balance feature that helps with falsing. Hope this helps.

I'll have to comment on one of these videos about metal detectors. I don't have your channel or someone else's. I'm looking for a metal detector with your specified gold. Believe it or not my my grandmother had a gold nugget as big as your fist. She never will tell him by what you found it. I got a good idea why, but I'd like to find me a metal detector and see if I can find it cuz where there's one nugget that big is going to be more. I don't have a lot of money. I bought a couple $50 medal detectors from the flea market. They wasn't worth picking up by the trash can dug up a lot of 10 cans so you can text me or whatever you call it when you contact somebody. Can you give me an idea what kind of metal detector I can get with you clearly show me gold and possibly how deep it is. I'll appreciate it. PS. I don't have a whole lot of money. I'm on social security. I'll get much. Thank you

Well most of all detectors will detect gold. That being said there are some detectors specifically for prospecting but like all detectors you will still find trash. Those specific machines are very expensive. There are some great machines it the $250-$500 range that will do a good job for that as well. If I can help feel free to email or message me!

None of them are completely waterproof unfortunately but the search coil is. The Time Ranger pro is pretty solid on the beach fresh or salt. Wet salt can sometimes cause some issues sometimes.
