I use a tip I saw on a video years ago from a guy in New Jersey I believe. I start at the highest tide wet sand mark and count the paces to the lowest tide to the waves. So example: in myrtle beach it's usually 80 paces. Split that to your center line which is 40. Now from the center you have 2 wash lines where targets drop. One is above and one below the center line. Count about 6 paces from center on either side (one toward dry sand and one toward the waves). You then will walk almost a straight line and start hitting targets. As you dig you can look back behind you and see the targets you dug are in almost a straight line behind you. I have did this since I started detecting in 2009 and it works at every beach I have been. I have detected in NC, SC, VA, Miami beach, Okinawa... I know it sounds crazy but it actually works. I have dug tons of gold and silver jewelry and coins. Try it next time you go. Good luck in your hunting!

Hi, do you mean when you reach 6 paces from the centre line, above or below and you turn 90 degrees and then detect parallel to the sea? Cheers

Great video Merrill I currently swing a XP Deus with a 9x5 coil, a Minelab Excalibur 800, and a White's TDI sl. When it gets hot I am metal detecting in the water with my Minelab Excalibur 800. I start out in Grannies Alley ( the first three feet of water ). That is where Mom or Grandma generally introduce their kids to the water and make sure they have Lots of suntan oil on as not to get sunburn. Then they rinse their hands off in the water and loose their Jewelry. Then I proceed out in deeper water a little at a time as water hunting can be a little slower until I reach my chin:)

I’ve been metal detecting for about a month now using the equinox 800. I have zero experience so the logical thing for me to do was grid everything I saw this video about an hour before a low tide at my local beach. I went out and used the technique you described in finding clumps. I found my very first 14 K men’s wedding band with diamonds after about five minutes on the beach in the wet. Love your videos. Thanks for all the good tips. I don’t know how to post a picture of the ring, but I can tell you it’s large and heavy.

I absolutely love your videos! Great content and instruction combined with easy to understand presentation (with lots of humor) made me binge watch your channel! This was particularly a great video that has helped me already find a few rings and lots of other stuff this year on the Texas cost. We just moved to the beach permanently and your videos are some of the best out there! Other thing that (to me) helps increase your odds tremendously is developing a method to pinpoint and dig as efficiently as possible. More targets = more treasure. Getting a high quality sand scoop with carbon fiber handle like Sunspot, Extreme, etc. also makes a huge difference and allows you to dig quicker and with less effort. Thanks!

Excellent video Merrill! We have been detecting for 20 months now and have similar finds to yours. Everything you showed is true. I always thought cuts in the sand were good, but we never found anything. Now I know to search about 15 feet in front of the cut. That makes sense because the sand would wash towards the water. I also watched your video about investing your MD $$. You did a great job with this video. Thanks for teaching us more! God Bless & Happy Hunting!

Very interesting video. Fabulous content. I detect in Fort Lauderdale and some Miami. I have had many PI units from Minelab and JWFishers, and still have one - the Garrett Sea Hunter II and run it with the 10x14 mono elliptical; this detector has amazing depth but no discrimination circuit to NULL iron, so you will soon suffer an iron-induced delirium digging nails, etc. Fast forward to... my other detector, the Equinox 800. Great detector and feature set, though EMI makes the detector wig-out whereas, the PI detector was oblivious to EMI not to mention no need to ground balance, issues with salt, black sand, or aliens - LOL. Typically, I have to run the Equinox at a sensitivity of 17-19. Okay, I guess, and I do use noise cancel, and ground balance regularly @ 20-30 min - but our seawater is really salty. Summary: budget and goals dictate what you buy. What to dig? Well, Merrill has it correct: dig all signals > 0, scan targets from 2+ directions, rescan your dug target holes, and remember iron can mask gold and silver nearby - so consider your coil size vs. trashiness of the area to be detected.

I Just bought my first metal detector which was the simplex ultra, and I don't want to go out and get lost in it, because then I will lose interest. I want to try to get a feel for it before I actually dig in and make some progress with it, Your videos are the best. You are a great teacher. A little side note, I am from Canada and I watched your target ID video, and the coinage targets are similar to mine, but the jewelry and trash is something I found useful! I couldn't find the download of it on your website, but it's okay! I really look forward to hopefully someday seeing one of your in-depth videos about the simplex ultra! Thank you so much!
