Hello Warren: First of all, don't stop doing your little history lessons on the way to each bush foray! Nice that you tell the less interested folk where to skip to in order to avoid it, but that is certainly not me. I was honestly surprised at the coin finds as it doesn't seem likely that farm kids of that era were packing many coins to lose, but obviously some were. I always love seeing the back roads and the bush sites you visit, so thank you! Looking forward to Colleen smoking you on the next visit LOL Cheers from Nor Cal my friend.

I grew up in north western NSW & my Grandparents' property had what was known as the "Teacher's Room" because teachers were billeted on different properties throughout the year. There was a site in a corner near the entrance to the property where there had been a schoolhouse before the building was moved to the nearby village to help form part of the district school. My Mum was the oldest of her siblings, so she used to double 2 of her siblings, on horseback, to the school before she went away to boarding school. A possible reason that houses were not erected for female teachers was that, there being an acute shortage of marriageable women in the area, the female teachers were wooed & married by the local Graziers. That might suggest that it might have (at times) been difficult for the Education Departments to maintain the presence of teachers in rural areas like that. Once female teachers were married, it may have been that they were not permitted to keep working, that being the way of things at the time."Cordial bottle lid with a hole in it, function unknown!" In the days before steam & dry irons , women used to sprinkle water onto garments before applying the iron to help remove wrinkles from the clothes. In a more flash households, the Cordial bottle might have a rubber plug with holes in the top (much like a salt shaker) for the same purpose.

Thank you for your comprehensive comment Keith - all of which is just how I imagined the experience of the teachers and students at remote schools - particularly interesting that the female teachers would be most likely married off and then required to resign - thus repeating the cycle of sending teachers to remote locations (and still not requiring a schoolteachers residence). Good point on the cordial bottle lid - simpler times back then! Happy Fossicking mate! Warren.

North Queensland? Looked like Rocky/Gladstone area to me. That ring may have been oft a telescopic sight me thinks, Did it have a male thread on it? Breakup day may account for those coins. Or a fete to raise money for the school. We had races and money prizes for the kids, shilling for a win, 6d for second, and 3d for third.Break up days were my favorite school days.

True, most coins would be from school fetes and community events - not too many kids with pockets full of coins in the 1920s LOL.

You might do a video showing your process of research and finding ownership of properties to seek permission, do you know how to record your computer screen ? just a thought if the weather or something blocks your intentions one day, cheers.

Thanks for your comment - yes a great idea for those days where detecting isn't possible - we actually do more research than detecting of course LOL. Will look at putting something together - Happy Fossicking! Warren.

Yes, the people of the area who wanted a closer school donated the land built the school, and arrange room and board and the government supplied a teacher free of charge, little lunch and big lunch then home. m Watermelons drinks and cakes on break up day. the moms and dads did the work.
