Interesting video as usual. As a retired history teacher, the main reason for bright uniforms was to avoid shooting at your own troops. The "Fog of War" was very real in the black gun powder era. After the first few volleys were fired in a battle the field would be covered with white smoke. Each nation settled upon a color so they could identify their own troops.. Red for the British, Blue for the United States, white I think for the French Royalists, etc. In one early battle of the American Civil war both side wore mostly blue with some units in Cadet Grey. During an early battle the North opened fire (alas very effective fire) on their own soldiers. After that the North kept the Blue and the south went with cadet Grey, though they had trouble importing the dye, so they switched about 1863 to Butternut, or yellow brown.

Wonderful day, John. Nothing spectacular, but a nice variety. The blob of solder reminds me of a story. I once found a pewter fork on a roof I was replacing. I blew my helpers mind when I used it for solder on the flat seam copper roof. Pewter is literally solder, a tin/lead alloy. LOL. Thanks.

Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense on the Royal Engineers button. Grandad was a sergeant-major in the corps so we spent a lot of time in the headquarters WOs and Sergeant's mess in Gillingham, Kent. Actually Brompton, but most folk don't know where that is, so Gillingham it is.
