My mother would only shoot the wet sand. Water temp made fingers shrink & metal expand. Always in the ripples, black sand and mean low watermark. She said the ripples HELD the stuff and the BLACK SAND indicated the lowest sand level just before rock and that was your older stuff. She would monitor the New & Full moon activity for peak low tides. She found A LOT of stuff to the point fellow hunters disliked her. Yet, she swung a 5 pound Compass Coin Magnum (one of the first 5) and was friendly even on low find days....

I've seen storms cut some deep cuts but it put the black sand up on the higher sand way up on the beach. A lot has to do with the condition when the storm stops. If wind stops and the storm ends on a high tide it can leave the black sand up on the beach and none is in the cut. I personally look for cuts that hold shells, gravel and rocks that weigh about as much as the targets you're hunting. I've also seen coins surf back down with a wave while I'm chasing it lol. I like when the Strom's end on a low tide because it doesn't fill the cuts back in. But then again I will get out into the water I don't just hunt on the dry beach. You'd be surprised how much is hanging out waist deep waiting on a storm to bring it in under the right condition. What's great about detecting is we can find stuff in all conditions at about anytime.

@@jeanponce2017 My mothers methods were without storms. In fact her favorite beach was in a cove. Rarely did the sand get turned up or beaten up. This was just everyday shooting on her part. However in regard to a hurricane that hit in 1981, she went storm shooting with the low tide that happened to be at the time the Eye came overhead. She got about 45 minutes in before having to leave. In that 45min, she hit several coin pockets even with some silver and saw additional erosion further out than what could normally be seen before. She was a great detectorist, not because she was my mother, but because of amount of stuff she found and because of the research and techniques she implemented in a hobby in its infancy.

I wish I lived near the beach ! Never tried night detecting, it’s a little suspect over in the UK being caught out at night with a detector, people would think you were up to no good, although I’m sure the beach would be fine. I’ll try it soon and let you know how it goes, I’ll probably try Talacre Beach first which is closest to me. 👍🏼

In my 5 years detecting in the east end of Long Island, I don’t get very lucky at the beach. I have pulled one silver ring and modern clad at the beach, all of my other finds have been permissions, parks, and woods. There is a lot of retired detectors out by me they grid out all the obvious spots. It is becoming more difficult to find good spots, need to think outside the box. Happy Hunting!

It was key for me go to busy beach more close to the city centre and all good stuff was way more back from the wet but i had to pick up like 60 bottle caps in session it was hard core :D Thank you for your tutorials ,)) Cheers from Czech

My SC beaches do not seem to have much at the wet, but higher up in the dry is where I've had good success. Best for me is where there are cliffs along the upper shoreline. This is the area where the high tides have come up and drawn sand down towards the serf as the water receded. I detect the area just below and extending out towards the water from the cliffs say 5 to 10 feet.

Things can turn up anywhere on a beach, high and dry, or low and wet. Although I much prefer low tide over high dry sand, truthfully anything can be found in either place. If your hunting low wet sand, keep something in mind, if you find a lot of pull tabs and no coins, it’s a bad sign because pull tabs are light weight aluminum, where as coins and rings are heavy metals.

Hi Merrill, great advice and it is poor day when we haven't learnt something. Swing technique is also critical when detecting. Not wanting to be critical, but to educate, please have a look at your swing technique at around 7.12. You miss about 3 to 4 feet of area on your left every swing. That's a missed opportunity. I have found it's better to slow down, cover your area. After all we get up early to give us the best opportunity. Love your vids, all the best. Happy hunting.

I don't hunt on salt water beaches but I am on the Great Lakes so there is some degree of sand movement. That being said.........I've found more in the dry sand than I ever have in the last two years by literally digging every trashy signal. I even check iron tones by kicking off a few inches of sand with my foot. Surprisingly the number of signals that suddenly improve when I do this is not insignificant. So much so that I do it in tot lots now as well. That small or dainty or chain gold hides in the trash. Heck even some small and dainty silver does if it's tarnished enough.

Definitely less change in the sand. At least we have 1 & 2 $ coins in Canada. I see less fresh drop pull tabs as well. In dry I just crank separation on the nox as I don't generally look for old drops there and allows me to make up for lack of goodies with swing speed.

Actually sand removal exposes layers not uncovered for decades or longer, just like major storm erosion. The newer sand deposited on top of old layers collects new stuff but they good stuff can be deeper than you can detect. I had an old great lakes beach that was used for 120 years got eroded to rock in the 70's, they never restored it. All the things there literally sank like gold in a sluice box...

Simplex is awesome on dirt and not awesome in salt. Go vanquish. In Florida it’s always a good time.

One would think that a government entity would be tracking the daily beach levels.

I think so too but I think it’s distance of water from street. When it gets close the beach gets replenished.

You should open the bottom of the Casio to let it dry a little. these watches are not 100% waterproof.

While I concede that there are probably a lot of people who could kick my *** in the world. I tell myself there is nowhere I will feel intimidated. I taught 20+ years in some of NYC’s most challenging neighborhoods and I came out with more faith in humanity. I assure you that nobody jumps you if you smile at them first.
