A day of Mudlarking in London. Very productive day with some nice finds. No detector was used at all. I have made all of the finds eyes only :)

When growing up in Fulham, my friends and I would go swimming in the Thames (I know - YUCK) but we knew nothing of the dangers of bacteria, etc. We often found small objects and usually presented them to our school. No permits but we were aware of the tide problems. The biggest danger was when river vehicles went past because their wash could drag people away. I do appreciate these shows being uploaded. One comment - please get the spelling correct.

+Metal Detecting River Thames am i right saying you need a permit for this, in some parts you cant metal detect and it is scrape or by eye only, some places by eye only, and there are certain rules depending on which part of the riverbank you want to go..
@shropshirehistory9088 жыл бұрын
+G. Jones P.S..Plus you have to hand your finds into london museum for recording!
@Automedon28 жыл бұрын
+G. Jones I just went to the site where you can buy the permits. There are different permits determining the depth you are allowed to dig. The permit for digging over a meter requires that you have held the lesser permit for 2 years and have reported previous finds (the law)
@shropshirehistory9088 жыл бұрын
+TheLeatherChannel Thanks for reply, I also checked it out this morning on the Port of London Authority website, i was right with what i said and alot of rules,yes by law you have to report your finds to London museum especially anything 300 years old or more...

Good video, regarding your shoe/boot soles the one in the middle looks the oldest as it's not left or right. Before 1850 there was no left or right shoe/boots design. They were just in pairs. The middle sole is a standard shape for either foot. Cheers from Pete :-D
@sarahstrong71746 жыл бұрын
Peter Agius Gosh Ive found loads of shoe soles. Now looking at these I think some of them were really old but I didnt know at the time.

england is just amazing !!!
@svenmulder41408 жыл бұрын
Maybe you already know, but the hammered is a Spanish colonial cob coin struck under Philip IV in 1662. It looks like it's worth 8 maravides and struck in Madrid. Often described as a pirate coin. Nice find!

Broken, pottery shards. Mixed bag of modern stuff. To much metal boat yard Fragments. Flat bottomed barge, very low In the water. If more hard Rain falls up river.

So how do you preserve the leather? After being in the water for so long & drying out like that you figure the leather would deteriorate rather fast.

Place of interest to go hunting. August-November 2014 has Been a busy month at the Chelsea Railway Bridge repainting team. By the heliport. The large flat bottomed barge. Scoops water under it helping To shift mud etc.... At low tide, quite a lot of Things are finding there way Onto the foreshore, by the Houseboats. Victorian, stoneware bottles. Some complete, others Not so. Good hunting in Battersea. Before The barge moves away.

Your first coin appears to be a bronze half penny of William III. His name in Latin was Gvllivmus, you can see the GVL on the coin. The reverse is a seated figure of Brittania. Below her would be the date (1600s?). The silver hammered coin looks like a sixpence, 1662, the arms look English though rather than Spanish?

Sorry that you haven't posted more vids.

I am wrong the coin is an 8 maravedi of Phillip 4 of Spain dated 1662.

Just so you know it's not a Tudor sole, they had straight shoes, meaning each shoe could fit left or right... it's a more modern shoe as there has only been a difference in the last hundred and fifty or something years. And before anyone says that's rubbish, go ask on the British museums website they'll tell you the same. Also I hope you had the permits for this, and that you also handed over your finds to the British museum? As by law you have to.. Could find out if you did or not as sadly it wouldn't play past half way for some reason. Shame as I was enjoying your enthusiasm :( Nice Video....

Good video but why advertise exactly where on the Thames you are? That is a Mudlarks worst nightmare! You advertise your exact location, then the next thing you know, it's swamped with foreigners who are detecting illegally and don't even have a permit. I'm not saying don't do videos, just don't show the world where you are exactly. Just Thames is good enough. That's why Mud Men is no longer being made. The PLA put a stop to it due to advertising the locations and illegal detecting.
