Here in Norway we pay for the bottle as well as the drink and when it’s empty we pop them in vending type machines and get that money back. almost all bottles like this are returned to the shops, but it’s not perfect as there are certain types of plastic bottles that aren’t included in this system. When I lived in London, I always felt awful about bottles just becoming rubbish

There was a similar system Here in the UK for pop and maybe beer bottles but it finnised in the 1980's there are plans afoot to bring somthing like it back if the politicians and various parties can get their act together. at least one supermarket Co. has machines that take plastic bottles and give tokens to spend in store, more stores should take it up.

I found two of those amusement only tokens in Escanaba, MI on the shore. They were the size of a penny and had a hole in the middle. I was told by a collector they were made in the 1920s-30s and used in a "3 wheel bandit" gambling machine. These were common in various varieties. They were usually paired with particular "gambling" amusement machines and could be "cashed out" with the establishment proprietor thus staying under the radar of the law. Really great find!

Thanks Si and Jules. Coins over the place that day. Even missed a few and a brass buckle. You are good stuards of the Thames . Makes me furious to see all the plastic. I agree we should just have stayed with glass. At least in a few states here there is a deposit on plastic you get back when you return it. Used to go collecting bottles as a kid to get ice cream money. Free clean up, kids stay busy and make a little money. Win win! Take care. Love the artwork 😊👍💜

My old English Gran used to say "See a penny, pick it and all the day you'll have good luck"... The same applied to finding a pin. Here in Australia we get 10 cents for every plastic bottle we take into the recycle centre, We cash in bottles and cans every 3 month and get around $80 great for no effort.

1st to comment n 2nd to like Awesome findings Really enjoyed n learned. The token is awesome. I was pleased to see the ISKCON disciple roaming on a peacock boat chanting " Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare , Hare Ram Hare Ram , Ram Ram Hare Hare ." You didn't pick up the doom shaped glass saying it a paper weight, ....actually these were used to read papers in Victorian era ..once they keep the glass over the words the words appear bigger n easy to read. Enjoy With Love from SAM Guwahati Assam INDIA

"a dodgey American penny, no offense" None taken 😆. We call them Stinkin' Lincoln's. The newer ones don't last very long without becoming corroded beyond recovery. I would definitely love to mudlark on the Themes one day. It is on my bucket list. Visiting Europe in general is on my list of things to do. I'll have to make it happen as soon as I can. I get so much joy from watching all you mudlarkers. One day I might get my act together and edit my baby Australian version 😂🤣 I don't find anything anywhere near as old though, and I find videoing a bit clunky. I don't think it matters though, not everyone is meant to be a KZbinr, as long as I'm hunting for historical items to rescue then I'm happy. Thank you for sharing another fantastic episode 😊

My weekly mud larking fix! All is now right in the universe. I loved the baby mammoth tooth. Excellent find and so great to get the background history with an illustration of what was. Wish I was there....looks like so much fun.
