I've been a metal drummer for 12 years but have never dove into other genres much, so Nightwish is a first for me. I'm excited to expand my musical palette by checking out Ghost Love Score for the first time!

This song was performed in Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland...

.. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tu-oh-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and very recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). But we all agree that he is one of the most entertaining drummers to look at. So it'll be interesting to hear what you think of his work after hearing enough.

Tuomas explained his method in an interview. He gets an idea for a new song. He goes off by himself with his trusty keyboard and as he writes the lyrics, he hears the music in his head for each instrument. When he is finished he presents it to the band and they put their flourishes on the piece. Every song is different and epic. He does not write fillers. Mozart composed in his head also and Tuomas is known as the ‘Metal Mozart’ by his fans. 😄🤘

Jukka is one of the best drummers I have ever seen , unfortunately he had to leave for health reasons. He was replaced by Kai from Wintersun he is very good too . They call Kai the human metronome ! This is propably the song people start familiarising Nightwish music. I have always known Nightwish, Finnish gift to music. I'm from Finland also. I love everything in their songs; lyrics, melodies, instruments, singing, composing of this music. And I am a huge fan of Jukka, his drumming and his style. How long did it take for her to give you the ' I told you so' ? 🤣 As you will find out, every song of theirs is different, and the feeling of the song being shorter than it actually is ,is quite common. As others have mentioned original drummer ,Jukka Nevalainen, is no longer behind the kit. Kai Hahto, who still remains today, plays Pearl drums. jukka is more or a showman, Kai more of a technician, but both are awesome. You are going to want to check out Romanticide from this show. And to see Kai, Weak Fantasy from the Tampere 2015 show.

There were around 80,000 people in the crowd. This song was 2/3 the way through their set. I think they are better live than in studio. And the drummer was double-pedalling almost the entire song!

Excellent reaction. For more of the amazing Jukka on drums you should check out Master Passion Greed (one of Nightwish's most angry and heavy songs), Slaying the Dreamer (also heavy with great vocal interchanges between Marco and Floor), Planet Hell, Everdream (the last part of the song is awesome, the Waken live show has some nice shots showing Jukka at work), and Dark Chest of Wonders (Nightwish has a dedication video of Jukka that features this song). And if you want driving, fast, hard metal, Romanticide is a must.

Sydney base camp of the Aussie chapter of the Nightwish army reporting in...follow Gabriel's list and you won't go wrong. Romanticide is the song that stuns reactors with the vocal range of both Floor and Marco as well as Jukka's drumming. If you love pyro shows....any song from the Tampere show is loaded with pyro especially the last song when you do react to it, watch it to the very end as it has a short yet important message. Sidenote: Floor is married to the drummer from Sabaton Hannes Van Dahl. I'll also recommend Epica, Sabaton, Dream Theater, Opeth, Aryeon, Rammstein.

The words you were looking for are siren, goddess or valkyrie ;-) Wacken Open Air is one of the oldest and largest metal festivals in the world and is located in northern Germany. Nightwish is a mixture of film, folk pop and metal. With Within Temptation they founded symphonic metal. Floor is just the temporary singer here. None of the songs are available as a studio recording with her. After the end of the tour she becomes a member of the band. NW and WT was not the first ones in symphonic metal. Therion was. (There were another band too, but can't remember their name...) But NW (and WT) gave "a face" to symphonic metal, kind of.

@@vivk1593 They were more than just the face. Therion was and is an exotic and never became a role model. Instead, Nightwish established the opera singing and Within Temptation pop singing. Therion could only be poured into a subgenre after these two bands.

@@vivk1593 Tuomas will have made this statement in relation to his black metal band Darkwoods My Betrothed. That sounds a lot like Therion. Therion is also considered a black metal band until 1997. For Nightwish, Tuomas names the film composer Hans Zimmer as a role model. Therion mastermind Christofer Johnsson names Richard Wagner and his operas. And so they also differ in style. And Therion's style hasn't caught on in symphonic metal, but will still have followers in black metal.

Great reaction. There is a reason this is called a score, it take you on a journey like a film. This is very melodic Nightwish and deifinitely one of their master pieces. But they have a catalogue that is very diverse. They also have a lot much faster paced and heavier songs. The nice thing is they make no fillers and they are in my opinion better live than in the studio. Floor is awesome but Julkka the drummer is awesome too, there is a reason Floor is pointing to him after they are done. There is a lot more to enjoy. 🤘

This is Floor Jansen the third singer and for many the best as she sings anything by previous two singers, one operatic (Tarja), and one pop (Anette). Only with Nightwish 10 months at this concert and every song written for previous singers. This is the 13th in the set. The whole set is excellent and worth a listen.

For a drummer, I think you'll enjoy Storytime (drummer's dream), Weak Fantasy (spotlight), Master Passion Greed (how hard can they get) and their tribute to Pink Floyd, High Hopes.

Bands like this (such as Nightwish, Epica) are amazing live. They play 10+ minute songs with many transitions perfectly live. Part of it is that they have no choice but to stay in sync with their orchestral backing tracks.

I'm an old metalhead from the late 70's through 80's etc... and I saw this video on a channel having never heard of this band, and within a month I had bought a ticket and flew from Texas to Boston to see them live, I just had to. It was wonderful!

I agree that Kai is technically one of the best, but I still prefer Jukka. Kai is a machine, but Jukka was an enraged Viking attacking the music with an emotional ferocity that was a joy to watch.

This drummer, Jukka, was replaced in 2015 (for health reasons) by his mentor, Kai Hahto. Who's one of the best of a generation! Perfect posture, technical perfection. Check him out in Weak Fantasy by Nightwish live at Tampere. And definitely look up his drum cams and clinics!

Wacken 2013 was in front of 82000 people. Nightwish's current drummer is Kai hahto, as Jukka had to step down with severe insomnia. You should check him out in Wintersun, look for one called Sons of Winter and Stars. If you want to see Nightwish crank it up? look for a song called Romanticide, from the same concert. But they go all the way to thrash in some songs. This is the biggest rabbit hole in music you are staring down... ask the wife!

@@IronSmokeLTD basically after you get more used to Nightwish and also check another symphonic metal band named Epica you may wanna check that huge and deep rabbithole. To make long story short Ayreon is not a band but a project by Dutch multi-instrumentalist composer Arjen Lucassen who composes concept albums that are like prog rock operas, records guitar, bass and keyboards himself then also invites some long collaborating friends to cover other instrumental parts then casts for his character roles cream of the crop vocalists from all over the world. They include Nightwish's Floor Jansen (ever since she was 16) as well Marko Hietala, Epica's Simone Simons, Dream Theater's James Labrie, Camelot's Tommy Carevic, Symphony X's Russel Allen, Blind Guardian's Hansi Kursh...even Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson to name a few if his stellar cast. Used to be that there would be no live performances due to scheduling difficulties among so many but he did a couple live concerts but only in Netherlands as it would be impossible tie all them people for the long term of a world tour. And of course whenever it happens tickets vanish fast. Anyway best starting point for his work is the official video of "The day the world breaks down"

Hey Ironsmoke, here another metalhead (guitar and vocals) and I love different kind of genres and also classical music. Nightwish is NEVER the same. They have lovely, folky songs and really rough Metal and everything in between :) Enjoy this ride. It is a long, breathtaking and awesome one. The band was original Finnish, now they have Floor Jansen (vocals) from the Netherlands (we rule with female frontwomen, like Epica and Within Temptation) and Troy (flute, Irish bagpipe, guitar vocals) from Ireland. The masterbrain/ composer is the keyboard player Tuomas (They call him Metal Mozart) Marko on bass and awesome vocals (raw and sweet) and Empu on guitar (who is a stunning guitar player but does not show off all the time, for him it is about fitting in the music) btw...they are better live than on album :D Did you get the catchy 4/4 3/4 4/4 3/4 rythm in the beginning? Sometimes the drummer is drumming 3/4 and the guitarist is playing 4/4 (you can see that in classical music as well) and builds up the tension. Their songs constantly change keys and rythm.

82,000 in attendance. The studio version was performed by a different singer so this was unquestionably a live recording. They have a different drummer now, Kai Hahto. Jukka who you saw here retired from playing with the band, but he still with them in management. Kai was his friend and he recommended Kai as his replacement. Jukka is more of a showman while Kai is more of a technician. As a Deathcore fan you might be interested in listening to Floor Jansen, the singer here, perform in her previous band ReVamp. She was the band leader and had creative control so this was her sound back then, "Misery's No Crime" kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX-zlqaCe7mhi8k. Unfortunately not pro shot. Some Nightwish songs have very technical drum sections while some are also quite heavy. If you're interested in those, Gabriel's list usually mentions the heavy ones. "Storytime" has a very interesting drum section that you'll probably find intriguing.

I think you would love the band ReVamp that she was in right before she committed to Nightwish fulltime. It's more grungy-growly vocals compared to Nightwish and the drumming is a little more complex(?) and intense that would lean closer to what you would listen to
