3D games were in their infancy still finding their feet. This game dropped where the gameplay characters were near equal to the cinematic models of the character, along with this there was literal hours of storytelling through the codec calls packed in which expanded the whole thing into a literal playable movie. It was even more than a movie-like experience because of the length and density of the storyline. Nothing else compared to it, in my opinion very few games still haven't come close to what this game gave us.

I was there in 1998 when this game dropped. To this day, it’s remained my favorite game of all time. Even thou the gameplay is dated by modern standards, I feel like that is also part of it’s charm. The over the head view point. The blocky graphics. The constricting control scheme. It doesn’t matter. The heart and soul of this game has remained to this day. The story. The voice acting. The music. The characters. The cutscenes. All of it just felt so ahead of it’s time and felt like EVERYONE gave it their A+ effort. I play this game once a year on my PS2 because of the impact this game made on me. I bought a copy of Sons of Liberty, before I had a PS2, because I HAD to know what happened next. Rumors of a remake have come and gone, if a proper one from the ground up happens, then I say bring it on. If not, then I worry not. For I was there to experience a game that defines a genre to this very day and I can’t thank Kojima enough for bringing this game to the masses. Thank You for this video. I’m so glad to know that there are people out there who truly care about this game as I do.

The first game was on the NES and that's why Solid is the way that it is. Instead of diving head first into 3D Hideo and others took the old school approach with new DNA. The gameplay is vastly improved with the graphics. It's why it had the impact it did and why we still run forward with old ideas because they can be explored in a new way. Revolutionary doesn't even begin to describe this idea because we keep going back to it. A remake could have the same gusto. Just look at RE right now. What's old is new and what's new is good. 😉

Playing games for at least 33 of my 40 years, and this still remains in my top 15 or 20 of the thousands I've played. I rented it from the local video store the week it was released and stayed awake all night finishing it around midday the following day. I experienced it all in one go as though I was Snake stuck in that place until the job was done and I'll never forget the impact it had on me. There is only a handful of games that I've played like that, where I felt compelled to keep going and see it through to the end in one session.

God, metal gear solid 1! I'd say that out of MGS 1 and MGS 2, MGS 1 is much more emotional. The codec calls are brilliant in helping characterize everyone! I especially loved the choice to give up. I felt like it was inevitable making it just that much more sad when I learned you can endure the torture. It gave me a really unique experience that I don't really think can be achieved with most of the games I've played by surprising me. All the speeches at the end of the game were also just so memorable and almost made me cry many times. I especially loved the speech on genes in the credits from Naomi. What a game! I'm not sure who actually made the decision, but having Greg Eagles originally voice Gray Fox was a stroke of genius. A nod to James Earl Jones as Darth Vader that people seem to overlook. The fact that Kojima removed this from Twin Snakes is a hilarious bit of irony considering his love for US cinema.

I remember playing the demo first from a gamer magazine, and I was in heaven. I got the game when it released, and it sucked you right in..yes I cried when sniper wolf died and the wolves howed in the winter silence. Ooo, that's when ya know you were invested. And that silly joy I got when I finally got the invisibility device ooo. But my favorite outside snake himself and, of course, sniper wolf would be grey fox. He was such a mystery and so cool that he just added to the experience. Mantis, with the taking over the ps controller, was wild to experience back in those days you actually felt dumbfounded. Overall, there are so many memorable characters and feelings and substances that it stays with you.of course, I loved 2 and 3 , 4 was iffy for me. Tho I did enjoy phantom pain. Of course, there was the training game after the first one before MG2. That was cool, just if to play around with grey fox. The remake for GameCube wasn't to bad tho but to experience the first MG is nothing like it and if to do a remake now would be interesting but would have to really try hard to capture the feel of the first. You can have all the fancy graphics, but to really feel like the first is a must.ps you also know your a die hard when you made sure to listen to every radio transmission and thst alone was a wild trip.

3:16 I always liked when badass fictional characters tend to be on the "shorter" side(by american standards). Typically male badass characters are 6'+( 6'3" tends to be the favorite). Now I've heard this is only partially intentional, as to the Japanese, 5'10" is actually considered to be tall. Which is why characters like Leon S Kennedy are 5'11" and the tallest RE protagonist(Chris) is 6'1". I think the varrying of Snake's height is them trying to scale it up to meet the american standards of "tall".

Only commenting so I won't get spoiled, but I just played through the first hour of Metal Gear Solid for the very first time recently. Controls are something to get used and polygons for days for the cutscenes, but the gameplay itself, soundtrack, cinematography, voice acting comes together and brings a level of intrigue that you're kinda surprised a game like this can be brought to life in a such a way, especially all these years later. The off putting feel of the graphics is literally thrown out due to how well directed the cutscenes & even character interactions on the codec are. And the voices that deliver said interactions, immersing you into the story. It's amazing how a game this old ages so well. I've been on & off on Metal Gear over the years, but this is one I intend on finishing & then go beyond from there.

Agreed. I would actually love to see some of the story from Big Boss s viewpoint as well as David s rookie mission..The parallels and drama if done right could be great..Metal Gear 2 had a great story in its game already. So to me the Metal Gear story would be the one that is vague enough to do something like a duel Vantage viewpoint story arc involving both Young and old Snakes..But that's my wishful thinking..Metal Gear 2 can be fully realized and transferred since the lore and its script is right there along with my favorite piece of music for its title sequence. This way they can bring Keifer Sutherland and David Hayter to do the roles. Or just bring back the VO from MGS 4 if Kiefer won't return..

In addition to the MGS series people should really jump into the authors kojima heavily references and celebrates in this series specifically John Carpentir who serves as the visual inspiration for revolver ocelot and who wrote and directed the escape from la and new york films, big trouble in little china, and the thing - that the character Snake Pliskin who is same character from the games played by kurt Russell. If your younger and you havent seen kurt russell doing snake your in for a treat. additionally the character Trautman from rambo is a ringer for roy cambell, there are dozens of other references from cinema from dr. strangelove, to the predator but what cements it all is kojimas cohesive worldview that gives all characters meaning while not falling into any good guy/ bad guy tropes, these games are political masterpieces reinforcing the idea that in a world with finite resources, there are no absolute enemies just relative ones with competing goals, "Tomorrows ally is yesterdays enemy, and vice versa".

The story gives me post cold war vibes which makes sense for the 90s, I always loved the setting and music. Gave me a Kenji Kawai vibe from Ghost in the Shell/Patlabor.

MGS may not need a remake but it could definitely use a port, currently the best way to play it is on aging hardware with more then likely a burnt disc (since the physical discs are getting rarer and rarer with each passing moment) OR play the GoG version which is functional even if it's lacking a lot of features (doesn't play nice with non 4:3 monitor resolutions, can't really emulate the psycho mantis fight, is lacking rumble support almost entirely). The original is fine but as time goes on that experience is going to be harder and harder for people to actually play.

I don't want a full-on remake, but I absolutely want a cross-platform enhanced port of Integral, with some extra customization options. Make it clear which options deviate from the original game, allowing players to have an authentic experience if they so choose, but also have fun fucking around with new stuff if they want to. I am terrible at the game without the radar, but I would love to play against the enhanced enemy AI of Hard and Extreme while still having the radar. I know that would piss off some purists, but I don't really care. Also, what would be cool are challenge scenarios set in Shadow Moses that are more complex than the VR missions. Think Peace Walker's Extra Ops. Maybe a boss rush, some boss variants, just some fun extra stuff. A toggle between the PS1 audio, the rerecorded Twin Snakes audio, and maybe a version of the PS1 audio that's been remastered as much as possible to remove the quality flaws that led to the Twin Snakes re-recording in the first place. Given the age of the original engine, it might require the game to be remade, but other games have been recreated with an eye towards authenticity before. Look at Christian Whitehead's pre-Sonic Mania reverse-engineered ports of the early Sonic games. It could be done with MGS1, given the right development team.

They might not need to remake Metal Gear Solid one but boy I would love a remaster of it I would love to see it in the style of Metal Gear 3 Snake Eater

You do a perfect ocelot. I actually happen to do a perfect snake. If you need me for a bit let me know. I’m not joking. I sound exactly like him. It gives ME goosebumps.

I remember playing this with my brother when we were younger, thinking it was gonna be a cool shoot’em up game and discovering one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had playing a game. I may have zoned out a bit during the long ass cut scenes because I was too young but that doesn’t change the fact that this is still one of the best games I’ve ever played lol

My favorite ps1 game. Period.

Every game that follows expands the lore already hinted at or briefly touched on in MGS1… who thought a character like Master Miller would get a full back story and heavy presence all the way in the fifth installment

I love the entire Metal Gear series, but the this game is my favorite and got me in so much trouble from not doing chores or something due to the cutscenes and codec scenes.

If not a remake, then a port to pc for the entire series because this is probably the most difficult series to emulate flawlessly, especially mgs4. It's really sad.

I have to give the edge to Zelda 64 for best game of 1998, but mgs is a lot easier to just pick up and play and was still just as equally groundbreaking. mgs games are so deep and rich with detail, i played the crap out of mgs2 20 years ago and just discovered a few new things a few days ago i didnt know about, like finding the actual door to the bathroom where johnny is crapping his brains out, or a codec call with lengthy dialog with campbell on the background of emma. At least once or twice a year i will boot up the ol ps1 or ps2 and play one of the mgs games start to finish. I recognize the brilliance of mgs4, but im really just not feeling that one or any that came after it. I even love the mgs vr missions game from 99. When i was a teen i recorded mgs1 and 2 onto vhs tape and would go to sleep to it, some of the boss fights and cutscenes i would unplug the composite audio cords and plug in my walkman with some slipknot or lamb of god and have some heavy metal playing instead, good times. anyway, i agree man, leave this game alone. they already did one remake and even though twin snakes was a good game imo, the voice acting and over the top antics in the cutscenes were kinda overdoing it.
