When I look back at the PlayStation, there are some games that immediately come to mind. Old-school survival horror games like the Resident Evil trilogy or Silent Hill, iconic platformers like Crash Bandicoot or Spyro the Dragon, just games that stand out to me as the most memorable for the platform. And for a lot of people, one of those games that immediately comes to mind is Metal Gear Solid. But for me personally… Well, I never played it. Despite everyone telling me throughout basically my entire life that I NEED to play the Metal Gear Solid games, they’ve just kind of sat on the backlog, at least until now. So does Metal Gear Solid live up to the hype, or is it simply nostalgia from people who played it 25 years ago? Well, let’s talk about it.

Metal Gear Solid is an action-adventure stealth video game developed and published by Konami for the PlayStation in 1998. It was directed, produced, and written by Hideo Kojima, and follows the MSX2 video games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, which Kojima also worked on. It was unveiled at the 1996 Tokyo Game Show and then demonstrated at trade shows including the 1997 Electronic Entertainment Expo; its Japanese release was originally planned for late 1997, before being delayed to 1998.

Fun Fact about the voice acting: According to David Hayter who voiced Snake, all the dialogue was recorded in an apartment in New York instead of an actual studio, likely due to a limited budget. This was fine because the fidelity of PS1 audio is not that high. However, when they made the MGS: Twin Snakes (a remake of MGS1 for the Gamecube) they had to re-record everything in a studio because if they had used the original audio and upscaled it, you would've been able to hear the traffic outside the apartment.

Funnily enough I noticed he sounded different in twin snakes and actually liked his voice more in the original but due to the traffic it makes sense why it was re-recorded haha

I've seen this meme multiple times in the past decade, but never any actual evidence. PS1's CD quality audio really isn't "low fidelity" by any metric. Also, TTS' new voice acting and especially localization suck arse.
@Cann1balHulk
@Cann1balHulk 4 ай бұрын
Another fun fact in the same vein; When MGS was being developed, a vast majority of the voice talent used pseudonyms instead of their actual names. This was due to the fact that Konami chose to use established actors & actresses for the voice work. Many of whom were in the Screen Actors Guild, which at that time had no set of established rules regarding members voice acting for video games. Instead of running the risk of running afoul with the SAG, many chose to use fake names, such as James Flinders (Cam Clarke), Patric Laine (Patric Zimmerman) & Sean Baker (David Hayter)

@@GugureSux the localization team and the voice acting director were the same for both games. Mei Ling's voice was changed due to a mistranslation of how she was meant to be portrayed in the original game. The direction of the game was different being led by the director of the Japanese action film Versus and was meant to celebrate the ludicrous nature of the story as opposed to making it this super serious action game made popular at the time all with Kojima watching excitedly.

Playing the nes one as a kid, then this one when got a ps1 was eye popping and amazing. I never ever made it far on the nes version but still liked it a lot. Playing solid hooked me instantly and as a kid could connect the dots on everything they did in the nes in the new technology and couldn’t believe it. So naturally when asked for a ps2 for Xmas I wanted mgs2 for it immediately to see that one’s leap. And boy I still was astounded. Playing just like solid, but the added graphical boost, all the little details sprinkled in really made it feel like next gen. Holding guards up and shooting out radios, even slipping on bird poop. Almost was amazing how every time a metal gear game was on the horizon you’d get excited at the possibilities of what they allow and show you what you could do with each leap in technology. Naturally it did stagnate to a point, but the fact multiple games they just up the anti was amazing.

It kinda bothered me that he did it cover the small details that made this game so great. For example the psycho mantis fight, as you mentioned. Does anyone remember at the beginning of the game we’re supposed to look for a channel to communicate with someone? I do t recall who but we’re told that the channel “is on the back of the disk” I couldn’t figure it out. But if you listened to what the chief was telling us. “It’s in the back of the disk” we can find the channel on the back of the game disk. Wow! Or when Dr Naomi wanted to use the nano machines to heal us. She had us put the controller to our arm and we can feel the “nano” machines healing us. But it was the rumble feature , new for the time, and we just felt completely in that word that Kohima created for us.

Boy what a different time it was. No twitch, no gigachad streamers. You went to the store in anticipation to buy the discs. It was you and the game. Companies invested fortunes in story telling and soundtracks. The graphical advance was hype with every game. Technological details like rumble motors blew our minds. And the Psycho Mantis controller swap has to be the most unique game mechanic ever invented to this day. MGS is one of my all time favourites and I think the success of this release founded what the whole franchise is today. ❤

During the Psycho Mantis battle in Metal Gear Solid, players must use flash grenades to stun Meryl. Additionally, it is necessary to switch the controller from port 1 to port 2 in order to prevent Mantis from reading the player's thoughts. After a few minutes, the screen will turn black with the word "HIDEO" displayed, indicating that the controller should be plugged back into port 1. This is a unique and exciting gameplay mechanic that can only be experienced on original hardware.

MGS 1 is such a masterclass in game design, it was FAR ahead of its time when it came out. It, along with Crash Bandicoot, and Command and Conquer Retaliation were the first video games i ever played, after my dad brought home those three games that were illegally ripped and burnt onto discs, and played on a Jailbroken PS1 (i refuse to call it PSX). This game is what got me into gaming and holds a special place in my heart as possibly my favourite game of all time, furthering into my favourite franchise of all time. I mean shit, i have had the MGS1 Alert theme as my phones ringtone whenever i get a call, and have had it as such since i got my first ever Motorola flip phone back in 2005 lol OH! Also, pay attention to Revolver Ocelot whenever hes up, not for anything in particular he does, but hes EASILY the deepest character in the entire franchise and his arc across every title and his involvement in the wider plot is just incredibly well done.

Omg my mind was BLOWN! For me, it was like... idk... the video game version of watching Apollo 11 landing on the moon the first time! Nowadays (ha! This game blew my mind apart as a middle schooler and as a gamer since a very early age. MGS2 was so good it haunts me still to this day, with the last conversation that seems to have been a warning to us all. its one of the best back to back games I ever played. at the time of release this was very new thrilling especially when I couldn't use the internet to help me, I had to figure it out. also at the part in the game where you are in the cell after O hand snake the key card, there is another way the devs added ketchup in the game to get out of the cell, I don't remember how I got it but I do remember using it as fake blood laying down not moving the guard came back and thought I was dead so he opened the door to check on me. that was very immersive for me and I was shocked what it worked. another cool experience was during the Matice fight when you switch the wired controller to the second port, he could not read your mind.

It doesn't over stay it's welcome with overly drawn out cutscenes, a player can reasonably complete it in one sitting and lends itself to multiple playthroughs. 35:02 and that is exactly what us ancient booMillennial gamers have been trying to tell the younger generations for dozens of years now. Where as the term "cinematic" has essentially become a slur for games in recent years, it used to be a PRAISE word describing strong atmosphere and kickass directing. Oldschool Resident Evil, MGS... heck, even Zelda: OOT were all praised for being "cinematic" back in the day, and it'd be hard to even joke about them being "movie games" in 2024. Anyway, congraz for falling into the MGS rabbit hole! Enjoy your stay, and play the games in the release order. And don't be afraid of replaying them, they got replay value for decades!

23:52 the turrets are not unavoidable and serve a tutorial purpose, even if it's not an obvious one; You get the Stinger Missiles right before the fight against the Hind-D. Those turrets can be blow up with the Stinger missiles. So first time around they may catch you off guard, but the second time around you can use the stinger missiles to blow them up before they shoot you and learn how to control that weapon. And even if you don't get that at first, at this point you already have chaff granades and you've probably already learned they shut down cameras so you can use those to avoid getting hit.

One kinda cool thing about the MGS games is they're all sort of concurrent to current events, MGS1 being concurrent with the completion of the mapping of the human genome, and a lot of anxiety surrounding that. Are we bound to our genetic destiny? Or can we chart our own course in life free from such troublesome inheritances? Those were live questions at the time and its clear Kojima must've been aware of and been inspired by them.

This video speaks to me. I am you and you, are me. I ironically finished MGS1 for the first as well like, two days ago! I have the same story as you too, all my life I’ve heard so much noise about MGS but never took the time to pick it up until now. Idky but I’ve recently went head first into Metal Gear lore, didn’t even have anything to do with Metal Gear Delta😆 But, hindsight tells me my algorithm was probably pushing it knowing this game was in the works. Nice video 👌🏽

MGS was the first game that I played nearly straight through...couldn't put it down. My awe during the final music cut scene ,I remembered feeling overwhelmed by the story and gameplay I had experienced. The detail, the 4th wall break while fighting psycho mantis, the wild boss fights...so much to love.

I'm a recent subscriber. Metal Gear Solid was the first of the Metal Gear's I played. It was a terrific game and looked amazing for the day. I had already played Silent Hill and Resident Evil which had elements of the mechanic. I love both those games too but this really felt like a step up. It's like what you said with your Air / Ace Combat videos where successive games were able to get more out of the same hardware. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Love this game, this was the first game in the series I played, yet I was a kid so the story wasn't something I paid attention to. Also a little something in case you didn't know. If you had left the bomb in your inventory and it counted down Deepthroat would have called to warn you about it. Also i'm not sure if you know this but this game has two different endings. Meryl can die depending if you gave into the torture at the hands of Ocelot. If that happens you can escape with Otacon. Yet despite the ending with Meryl being canon, many gamers say that the ending with Otacon should be, as the cutscene you have with them is more emotional and in tune with the theme. You should check it out if you haven't.

Glad that you enjoyed it a classic game I’ve not played at all till recently through Master Collection Volume 1 as i finally get to play these games and it was fun diving into this franchise as I’d call it “Metal Gear Saga” like an Anime Arc like in phase 1 and I’ve been a fan of this franchise way before playing these classics from watching peoples gameplay vids on KZbin but I wish Konami would put more care into their own ip thankfully we’ll get MGS Delta remake to 3 so I’ll be re playing the original before delta and look at a side by side comparison of old vs new.

I actually played the demo on a demo disc a month or so before release I believe and it ended with the DARPA chief dying and I knew right then I HAD to finish it. At that time there were NO games like this, nothing so polished and like basically playing out an action movie. It was a true innovator. Played the full game in 1998 on release and the first night I played almost all the way through. The music is AMAZING Harry Greyson Williams was an awesome composer. In my top ten list of all time. Better to play the gamecube remake though Twin Snakes, makes it much better. It and snake eater are astoundingly great. Played Sons of liberty with the purchase of my ps2. When snake eater came out I drove 50 miles to get it at midnight on release. These games are masterpieces. The faces in mgs1 didn’t’ have detail because it wasn’t possible with the memory they had.

18:25- ParametricAvocado. LOL 😆 20:46- Same here, I actually read the Previous Operations of Metal Gear 2 and I couldn't find anything about Big Boss telling Snake that he is his father. SPOILER: Since Kojima made it that Big Boss is the father of Solid and Liquid Snake, he decided to give Big Boss his origin story as the main character in Metal Gear Solid 3/Snake Eater... Which would soon be called Delta.

There are little mistakes here and there still, but nice video! I played this game almost 25 years ago for the first time and replayed it almost yearly since then. How about this game uh!? I was 13 in 1999 when I played it the first time. Imagine the place all of the key moments of this game have in my memory. Interestingly the puddles in the opening area aren't actually puddles, they are additional scenery below the floor, with a transparent layer on the floor texture. The PS1 wasn't capable of reflections to any reasonable degree so the team who designed it simply faked it. Very clever really!

Easily one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. I just played through it again in January twice to re-experience both endings. For the uninitiated, this game is FULL of little details and gameplay mechanics that will surprise you and oftentimes break the fourth wall. It was a masterpiece back in the nineties and very much deserves its reputation as one of the best games ever made.

I played this through at least 5 times when I first got it back then. Absolutely blew everything else on PSX out of the water. Surprised you didn't mention having to plug the controller into port 2 to stop Mantis from reading your mind and having to get a codec code from the back of the box to continue the game. I hope you are going to continue playing the whole series, Phantom Pain is an absolute masterpiece, don't listen to the haters!

There is a briliant little details you might have missed, such as when you unequip your weapon the ninja does too, to make it a fair fight, while if you fought him with weapons all the way you would never get this hand to hand fight. While psycho mantis can be fought 2 ways also. but what was mind blowing for me is that the prison guard catch you when you hide under the bed you can't fool him again with the same trick, you need to use other methods such as Ketchup and lie down on it so he thinks its blood. Briliance that is not present in present games

Loved the video. One thing you may have missed playing the pc version is the strat for beating Psycho Mantis. In the original version it's impossible to hit the boss and if you don't find the solution after some time the colonel will call you to tell you that Psycho Mantis can read your mind and that you have to plug the controller into port 2. Also as a bonus, prior to the fight, Psycho Mantis will attempt to read your mind and will comment about the games you have saved on your memory card. Ps. I hope you will play Metal Gear Solid aka Ghost Babel on the gameboy color as it was also directed by Kojima.

I envy you this is my favorite video game series although I haven’t played the first one yet. I started playing back when metal your solid two first came out and loved it. I believe I’m gonna start my metal gear solid one play through on my steam deck this weekend. It seems like a good device to play it. The smaller screen will probably make it hurt less. It’s the whole reason I never went back to play it because of the graphics unfortunately but it’s just too good of a series not to play.

Young uns just can't appreciate the huge leap forward that the PS1 gave gaming. I'm old enough to remember the Binatone Tennis/Squash console. Then I had the Commodore64. Then the Atari. I first played the PS1 at College with 4 friends. We took turns playing Resident Evil. 3 times it made us jump - I was amazed. Silent Hill was better. Metal Gear Solid was the pinnacle of the PS1 games.

After the torture section, you can use the Ketchup trick, it's more fun than hiding under the bed. For the tower stairs, you can spam Stun Grenade to move quickly, use the Chaff Grenade to disable Camera, and yes Chaff disable Radar so you can use it on 1st Phase of Rex, Spam Chaff then Stingray the hell out of it.
