I guess the intent behind Raiden's Japanese voice was to make him sound even more like a "False Snake"; A man wanting to be like Solid Snake, but has done so through Virtual Training and attempts to leave his past behind, eventually having his hopes dashed by the finale.

@@NebLleb that is the intent of the game OVERALL, and for as much as I do enjoy Quinton Flynn's voice acting, the English dub fumbled the ball greatly by not getting someone who can match that for the role. it makes the infiltration of the Big Shell in the beginning lose its mark when your supposed Solid Snake does not even sound similar to him. It does add a somewhat interesting spin to the S3 Plan, however.

Gotta love that if you shoot these same bombs, the whole structure blows up, but in a cutscene, just Solidus gets the hit and he just catches some fire.

I'm sure had Kojima had control over everything at that time, he would've redo the entire English cast. since the English cast vibe goes completely opposite of what the characters were intended in the original. and that also makes sense why Kojima wanted to replace David Hayter for a long time. and he finally did with in 5, which is close to the vision he intended for the character

Find it cool Akio Otsuka voiced both the real and fake Solid Snake. On the other hand, Raiden's Japanese voice sounded very masculine compared to Quinton Flynn's more youthful and raspy performance(prior to Raiden becoming a badass cyborg ninja in MGS4's events).

Both versions work for different reasons. The Japanese version is more believable and realistic, but the English version is more campy and adding to the silly tone.

It's not intended to be silly here. The game takes itself quite seriously. The dub is it's own thing. Which is what's so contradictory to how it's replaced the actual games in the eyes of a lotnof the global fanbase

I didn't realized it for all these years. but looking back now, The English casting director definitely missed the point of the characters. Hayter's voice and the English script gave a totally different vibe compared to what the Japanese Solid Snake was intended as

@@night-seeker666 the English localization team changed most of the dialogues to fit for western audience. theyy even added jokes on certain places where there wasn't in the original script.. then there is the voice actors, Hayter and along with the voice actors basically did their own thing rather than following how the japanese VAs sounded like

@@v-trigger6137 I think localisation of script like that is fine as long as they don't fuck up the story, ie. making Goku say he's the "hope of the universe" which trips over his arc of accepting his heritage. As for the performances, that's more down to direction. Different voices across dubs can work if they still fit the character.
