Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 - PC / Steam Analysis

The first volume of the MGS Master Collection was released today on PC, featuring MGS1 through 3, as well as the MSX games. It's a bit of a mess. This video looks at the big and small issues, a couple of genuine improvements, and a look at what could have been.

After playing the collection version of MGS1 myself, I can confirm there currently isn't analog control. The stick is just mapped to the d-pad. It's especially annoying when trying to look around in any first person situation.

Oh man really 60 usd? That's an actual joke. Here in Argentina (at least until 20th November since that is the day that ARS steam will be converted to USD because of huge inflation), the game is 5 usd converted to ARS. 60 dollars? What the actual fuck, it doesn't make any sense; it's exponentially worse than LOU Part 1 at 60 usd and that is saying something. Steam localization prices should be a thing in this cases to send a message to the companies about the price we are willing to pay. The one bright side of the Master Collection is that the HD Collection versions of MGS 2 and 3 are natively ported code, meaning it'll be easier for fans to patch them and add stuff like native mouse support.

Great analysis, it's upsetting that I was excited for this on pc, I haven't finished mgs1 before and was excited to play it again, as well as play though mgs2 and mgs3 again....but these ports just feel so lazy, esespecially mgs2 and mgs3. So instead I've refunded and settling to buy a copy of the mgs legacy collection on my ps3, having all the mgs games on my ps3 instead of swapping to my 360 to play the hd collection will be great. And infact the ps3 versions are better because of the pressure sensitive controller. These games deserve more, especially for £50 GBP or 60$ USD

Forgive my cynicism but you weren't really expecting these people to actually put the effort, love and commitment some of these modders put. Same story as GTA "definitive edition" - just outsource some company to do the job for cheap since you know a collection like this has the potential to make a significant profit based on the basic premise. Is there still no way to remap the controls, even in a .ini file ? How is the button pressure sensitivity implementation working in the keyboard? It seems it's always off but how do we do the actions that required the hard press? Man I really wish they dissociated the same controller buttons for different actions in the keyboard and allow custom mapping.

I've never tried the ps3 collection on an emulator so I don't know how they run there. MGS 2/3 run fine on pcsx2. It's just that MGS3 originally ran at 30 fps on the ps2. So, it'll be 30fps on pcsx2. You also have to deal with the pressure sensitivity crap. I figured out how to put the hand guns away when you hold up someone, but I can't figure out a way to hold up someone with an assault rifle without shooting them as soon as you press the button.

I feel that Master Collection is actually a pretty strong attempt. ON CONSOLE! This PC port was just barebones. You can tell Konami DID care here, but that they had consoles in mind for this release and didn't bother with improving the version we PC gamers got.

afaik alteast mgs 3 seems to be not encrypted and easily accessible for modders. There is a fix for the 720p limitation from day 1 on. more fixes should arrive soon but like the comment above me says. The best way for now to play on PC is emulation for sure.

It's funny but it's letterboxed depending on your highest available resolution, not your actual resolution. So if your TV has 3840x2400 as the highest the game will display in 16:10 aspect ratio, for some bizarre reason

Great video analysis. I got a Steam refund 40mins in. The PC version of this collection is no good. Keyboard and mouse support is limited and terrible. It's best played with controller. I was not able to find a way to get back to main menu on MGS 2 and 3 to quit the game. The console versions take the lead in this collection. Steamdeck doesn't run MGS 2 and 3. For PC, emulation is still the best way to play these games. I still purchased the PS5 disc for collection purposes. Will keep it sealed until the end. If you are new to the MGS world and own a PS5, get the digital version there, it will also include the PS4 versions. Good deal i think. Hope the modders come to the rescue for the PC version.

If this is the way the state of the games in the master collection, this makes me concerned that the upcoming remake/remaster/whatever its called of MGS3 will have "issues" to say the least... Also, I do feel weird/uneasy about old MGS games being rereleased/remade/remastered (whatever the right word is, for this collection and the upcoming mgs3) and potentially profit made from them without Hideo Kojima involved. I've owned a physical copy of the pc version of MGS1 since I was a kid and now i'm curious to see the duckstation version with crt effects. Are there any tutorials on how to set it up like you show in the video?

DuckStation is much better especially because it implements PGXP geometry correction. 2000's PC version also has correct texture geometry with no warping, but DuckStation goes beyond. It's a much better experience and IMO the best way to play MGS1 today. It's not hard to set it up. And by the way, if for some reason you don't want to use DuckStation, Beetle PSX HW also has the same features.

In a world where Konami actually cared, 5:40 to 8:40 would have been the trailer for the collection... I'm sure your notice at the end was just a CYA measure, but- if you can't advocate emulation, I will! It's completely legal (thank Bleem and VGS for setting precedent) and a much better way to play. And since these are CD/DVD-based games, there isn't even any need to worry about the whole ROM situation- you can just buy physical copies and an optical drive for your PC, and you're good to go.

5:36 What they could have done: In MGS1, they could have worked on a PC version, as the effort would have been less since all the assets were prepared for PC. The work there would involve updating to a new engine or adapting to new hardware, but instead, they chose the more challenging path of directly converting from the PlayStation 1. MGS2 also had a PC version, which is more comprehensive than the HD version, and it would have been essentially the same work as MGS1 for PC. For MGS3, in fact, a conversion to PC could have been achieved by taking the source code and adapting it for PCs simply by swapping the APIs and recompiling. Overall, their strategy wasn't the best, and it had an impact on the delivery of the results.

I hold out hope that modders will be able to access the emulator M2 uses for MGS1 in the Master Collection and unlock settings options. I haven't played MGS2 or MGS3 yet, but there are mods out for better resolution and audio, and it's nice to finally have a native MGS3 PC port. I understand that console gamers won't get the same benefits as PC gamers when it comes to mods. The collection could have been done better on all platforms but at least there's hope for the PC version.

Can you still buy ps1 games on the ps3? If you can, then I'd choose the ps3 since MGS1 has full analog control, no missing dialog lines. It also doesn't have that blurry ass bilinear filter. You can also buy VR Missions. As for the PS3 collection, depending on the cost of a used copy, you get MG1, MG2, Solid 2/3 as well as Peace Walker.

Sure, here you go: - Duckstation settings - Display: - Aspect ratio: 16:9 - Scaling: Nearest-Neighbor Enhancements: - Internal Resolution scale: This is to taste, but 2x for a cleaner but still retro look, or 9x for super sharp 4K, or anything between, really, whatever you prefer. I used 4K in this video. - Texture filtering: Nearest neighbor - True Color Rendering: enabled - Widescreen Hack: enabled - All the stuff under PGXP: enabled. This will fix the PS1 wobbling polygon effect. Only turn on "CPU Mode" if you have a beefy computer. Post Processing: This is also to taste, but I like to add the dolphinfx Bloom and Scanlines shaders. Adjust the individual settings of these to whatever you like. These are used to replicate some of the more flattering elements that playing MGS1 on a CRT provides. So the only reason I ever bring up the pressure sensitive buttons is because of particularly MGS2 VR Missions. Specifically MGS1 Snake Hold Up mission 7, technically all of the levels, but mission 7 it is very apparent. I have this collection on the PS5 and it appears that you can do it on PS5 without trouble(or I should say it seems possible to get first place here), but I just know without the ability to bring up the weapon and hold up an enemy you can bet you will not get first place in these levels. This nifty little feature is necessary for this section of the game most. I would say for the rest and even MGS3 it is unnecessary. Can play majority of these games without this feature.

@@SP-vl1jh Yea, I have tried on Xbox One X forever ago and can definitely see it is not possible without the pressure sensitive face buttons. You can do it on a PS3 with an official PS3 controller to get through the part I am talking about, but if it's not on which appears to be official hardware it's not possible. Except on PC with V's fix mod. I am only focusing on consoles mainly because at least with PC there is a mod to deal with this issue, but Xbox or potentially the Switch now, I don't think you can.

The noticeable input lag in MGS1 is because it run at the Pal 50hz version for every version of this collection.

Not true. You have 50hz PAL version. 60Hz NTSC-U & NTSC-J. You have to download the US and Japanese language packs and pick English US / Japense

I find it crazy that i dont have any of these problems. I did install a mod to play at high resolution. The only thing i noticed is the fps slow downs in MGS2 MGS3 plays just fine. MGS2 with high res definitely doesnt get along to well but non the less i can still play an completely enjoy them. Just beat 3 now moving to 1 an 2 then back to 5 baby.

What I find stupid is that they still couldn’t add the pressure sensitivity controls as an optional feature in case someone….I dunno…..has a ps2/ps3 controller laying around that they can use for Steam?

As much as I want to agree, this is just not possible because Steam API, to my knowledge, doesn't have any calls for pressure sensitive buttons. If a PS2/PS3 controller is supported, it wouldn't allow for pressure sensitivity because it's inputs would basically just be translated to Xbox inputs for compatibility with modern games. Adding proper support may require extra resources or permission from Sony. But hey, RPSC3 and PCSX2 have pressure sensitive controller support.

@@HowardHeyman I would have kept those emulators had it not been for the fact I can’t figure my way around how to actually *PLAY* the roms. PCSX2 kept asking for these sorts of software data from actual games to use to play the roms or something. I forgot. Basically it wanted me to buy the actual games themselves so I can port them digitally onto the emulator, and that made no sense to me if I could just buy the console and play the games that way. I admit that I ain’t extremely intelligent or anything, but the way PCSX2 is asking me for actual games I need to buy to play just doesn’t seem right to me, nor do I know what to do if I did something wrong, or can’t figure something out, even if I did search up what to do.

It's because those controllers aren't natively supported by PCs, let alone Steam. You have to use third party programs to get them to be recognised.

MGS1 is the reason I wanted this collection most of all. It's been a long time since I've played it. I want the Switch version, but I am not certain that will be much better, but that blurry low resolution is an insult to a fantastic game from a fantastic series. Konami has no appreciation for what they have and they prove it every fucking day those stupid pachinko machines disgrace their name.
