9 times out of 10, bugs like that are caused by the framerate being way higher than what the game was designed for. It usually happens on games that were designed for consoles first, because the framerate is more predictable on those, so they often take shortcuts and don't factor in the framerate into their physics calculations. Most modern game engines separate the physics timestep from the rendering framerate, although that adds an extra layer of complexity (you have to interpolate the positions in between physics steps so things seem to move smoothly, even though the physics might only be running at 30fps). That gets handled at the game engine layer - most developers don't even have to think about it these days. These days developers tend to reuse game engines rather than writing each game from scratch (e.g. Unreal, Unity, CryEngine, Frostbite, etc.). It sacrifices a bit of efficiency, but it means the game engines can use best practice everywhere without taking shortcuts, and modern PCs and consoles are fast enough that the efficiency penalty is not a problem. Bugs like this are a thing of the past - it requires going to extra effort (writing your own engine), and then half-assing it (not properly factoring in framerate differences). They're always really funny to look at though, so I think it's something to celebrate.

You know what was fantastic in this game? Co-op. And by fantastic, I mean hilariously broken. Y'see, one person plays the *body* and one person plays *the mind*. As in one player is controlling how the character moves and aims, and the other player is controlling the psychic powers and pulling the trigger. In other words, the main character basically becomes a Jaeger from Pacific Rim- If you are in perfect tandem with your partner, you could potentially be even more effective than if you're alone! Alternatively, the psychic player could grab any crate you happen to look at and toss it at you, or refuse to fire the gun because your brain has decided it's a pacifist and you have to melee everything to death until they agree to shoot again. It's wonderful chaos.
