Not only, also objectively bands that are gaining more popularity are worse and that leads to statement that "metal might be dead" It also comes from people that usually don't like metalcore or nu metal and unfortunately for them(?)* these genres have bigger audience nowadays, just look how popular Sleep Token or Linkin Park became. * I also don't really like them but I just keep listening to old stuff or something more appealing to my taste in music and it does not bother me that they do classify themselves as metal as long as they don't become majority on festivals I like

I feel like the only real things hurting metal is that the stuff that’s popular/mainstream has become very samey, ripping specifically from late 00s and early 10s metalcore, and the production has become even more samey and VERY sterile. The best and most unique stuff has always been the underground though, so it’s not that big of a surprise that the mainstream stuff feels played out

Metal is in the healthiest place it's been since early '90s, imo. Sure, it's not filling stadiums aside from festivals outside of Metallica and Iron Maiden, but in terms of metal being recognized in the mainstream, Forbes have ranked lists of top metal artists and albums which are better than Loudwire's, Gojira performed at the Olympics, Jimmy Kimmel will have Knocked Loose and Poppy performing Suffocate on his show this week leading up to the Grammys which they have a nomination for, Spiritbox are almost universal after their Cobra collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, Falling In Reverse have Jelly Roll on a single, Sleep Token and Babymetal reach international crowds as no one else, most of the upcoming massive rock festival lineups are nearly half metal artists, and metal streams and sales are increasing substantially overall this year. It's a different case than twenty years ago when the best metal was doing was a few Nu-Metal and Metalcore bands being played on MTV and Ozzfest, Download, and Rock am Ring being the only notable metal festivals, much broader and more beneficial to the entire metal community and a lot of artists being brought up equally. We're great, about to be amazing, I feel.

If anybody thinks metal died in 2024, I recommend to check out your local, more underground bands than these very popular ones. I myself listen to bunch of newer artsits of Polish metal scene (and attend to their shows as well) and they mostly go for oldschool-like sound, there's many thrash, speed, death and black metal bands :) They often take inspiration from our country's legends like Kat or Turbo. German thrash scene is also pretty cool. And if you like doom - listen to Castle Rat. So yeah, fresh metal scene is in pretty good condition, just find something more niche than Ice Nine Kills or Infected Rain if you don't like direction these kind of bands take.

I can only agree. I've been listening to metal since 2004 and I've been through older and newer bands and a lot of them just sound the same or very similar as older ones and leave the "where did I hear something similar before?" feeling. I guess there is a limit on how much variation you can invent within constraints of a genre or numerous subgenres of metal with musical instruments.

Man, best metal discovery for me this year was Make Them Suffer. Daaaaamn they slap. The new stuff they dropped this year is great, but it led me back to one of their earlier albums called Worlds Apart that is an absolute banger. I've had it on repeat for weeks.

Its a genre issue for me, I cannot stand to listen to that relentless screaming that sounds the same on every track, but I think their music is an absolute gem, I have recommended them to people who are into similar stuff.

Metal is going the same way as Pop it seems - too many nobody artists that sound the same, that don't really challenge the style or dare to venture into new territory

You may not see this message but I'd love for you to check out Castle Rat, maybe do a video on them because they really scratched my itch for a heavy sound but without a gutteral style of vocals. Best way I could describe them is if Black Sabbath had a front woman.

It's always been Mike Shinoda and friends but the album is literally 4 out of 6 original members with an overqualified drummer (he's literally a producer and songwriter) and a female singer who is getting too much unwarranted hate.
