Now S&M is easily in my top five favorite albums from anyone ever.

Love this one from Metallica. I remember James saying he wrote this and didn't want anyone seeing it. People my age-(26), will usually always laugh when I tell them that this is my mom and dad’s song and wedding song, but honestly it is such a beautiful song! Makes sense since nowadays young adults think Metallica is some cornball metal group from the 80’s, but they weren’t blessed like myself with listening to them for all their lives due to their father being a total metal freak. They are the most successful metal band for a reason 💛 thanks for appreciating and reacting to this song!

@@figu6ka379 said above, people I’ve encountered that are my age of younger either don’t know who Metallica is or think they’re an old, corny band and haven’t actually listened to them. @@Werewolf914 that is rad! I feel pretty blessed to have been raised with so much versatility in music, especially the metal to alternative to grunge genres. One of the first Metallica songs I ever learned to play. From what I've read it is about a relationship, but to me it's also always embodied some of the key aspects to the metalhead mindset. That 'Life is ours, we live it our way" attitude. Ideals that are very well represented by the track 'Wherever I May Roam' from the same album. I think you would enjoy the lyrics to that one.

There’s a reason why Metallica are as big as they are. Great lyrics and music. This album was such a switch up for them at the time and they received a lot of flack for it, which was honestly not deserved. They were willing to try out a different style and executed it perfectly. Not only that but it wasn’t their first time doing more stripped back work, example: Fade To Black and Welcome Home Sanitarium. If you want to see them play with an actual orchestra check out the 1999 S&M version of No Leaf Clover, an original they made just to perform with the orchestra, it’s a live album and is flawless from cover to cover. Thank you so much for reacting to them again ❤!

Love that you picked up in the orchestration, it lead to my personal favorite Metallica album. The strings were added in by a composer named Michael Kamen, who also worked with other rock bands such as Pink Floyd to add strings and brass to live shows. He wanted to do the same with Metallica and managed to put together orchestral accompaniments for an entire concert’s worth of their songs for a recording with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra called S&M. It takes some familiarity with their music to truly appreciate, but it also features a new song called “No Leaf Clover” that has become a fan favorite. Worth checking out some time.

A ton of people hate Lars, calling him a “bad” or “sloppy” drummer and “bad for the band” etc. etc. - but he was actually the very reason why the public got to experience that song. James was extremely shy about the song, but Lars gave him a confidence boost and helped put all the elements together as the track we all know and love today. On Howard Stern they jokingly said that it slowly became somewhat of a testament to their brotherhood and strong friendship, like a “love letter” to Lars, because he encouraged and supported James when he was having a hard time sharing certain stuff with others. James wrote it when he missed his girlfriend, but it became so much more over time 😃
